Obama will move the country forward

In the upcoming California Democratic primary, Sen. Barack Obama, D-IL, represents the best choice for voters in northern San Diego County.
I am a 20-year resident of our community and up until six months ago, a lifelong Republican. I have recently changed my affiliation to Decline to State so that I may vote for Sen. Obama in both the primary and the general elections.
What turned the tide for me was the last seven years of the Republican administration. Irresponsible spending, deficit spending, a war that should have never been authorized and never been waged, disregard of our civil liberties. For all of these reasons, I am now supporting Obama.
Many politicians would have us believe that we live in a nation of polarities. For example, we always hear that we either live in, red states or blue states. But Obama intrinsically understands that we as voters and as Americans are more complex, and don't necessarily want to be pigeon-holed into boxes based on our views on any one particular issue.
Obama brings an intelligence to the political arena that has been missing for years. He brings a middle-class background that has also been absent. He also brings common-sense solutions to challenging problems and a knowledge of the Constitution that is sorely needed by the chief executive. He has stood up to special interests in Illinois and in the United States Senate to pass sweeping ethics reform laws that will ensure that our voices are heard again at the legislative table.
His record also shows that he has the ability to work with people of both parties to get things done. He will finally solve some of the issues that have faced our nation since the 1990s: affordable health care, quality education and liberating our government from the stranglehold of special interests.
One in four Californians do not have health care, many right here in northern San Diego County. That is not right, and we need a leader who can finally fix it. Obama is also the only candidate who has opened an office in San Diego and hired a full-time staff member to focus on San Diego County.
Living here in northern San Diego County, we each wrestle with many complex issues. Many of us have friends or relatives deployed in the armed services. Many young men who live in this area have been deployed to Iraq. Some have died there.
Their absence has a devastating impact on their families, particularly at this time of year, and the local economy. One of my friends, the wife of a deployed Marine, was just relating to me how difficult it is with her husband on his second tour, anticipating his return in January only to learn that he is being extended two more months.
The day he takes office, Obama will begin to bring our combat troops home, while putting in place a plan to secure the stability of Iraq and the security of our troops as a phased withdrawal begins.
America deserves a leader with a dexterous, open mind in what is sure to be a critical period in our nation's history. With the storm clouds of an economic slowdown looming, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan raging, an aging Supreme Court and America's reputation abroad battered due to the actions of the current administration, America needs a president who thoughtfully applies wisdom, counsel, logic and temperance to the weighty issues he will surely face. I believe Barack Obama is the only candidate in this race who has these qualities and will move our country forward.

All of the Democratic candidates are rated as "abysmal", but unfortunately the Republicans are not mush better. I am still voting for "None of the Above", and as usual it will probably come down to voting for the candidate that is the least worst.
JP wrote on Jan 5, 2008 10:01 PM:Don't you love it when someone tells you what their candidate of choice "will" do if elected, as if it was some kind of guarantee? Before Obama came into the presidential picture, I doubt if most people, including Ms. Welsh, had any clue Barack Obama existed, and now he's touted as the heir apparent savior of the country. Obama is a smart and charismatic guy, and the fact that he does break the mold of the typical candidate makes you think that this may be just the kind of change the country could use right now, which is Ms. Welsh's main point that I happen to agree with. But please, don't cheapen Obama's unique image by telling us he will give us all a chicken in our pots if we elect him.
Ray wrote on Jan 6, 2008 1:04 AM:Obama will never be president even with the party nomination for two reason, America will not elect a black man for president, not yet at least and he is a product of the Chicago democratic machine, so goes his change. Remember Obama has tough ground ahead of him like the south, southwest and northwest which sill hold long standing beliefs. Even if Obama garnishes the black vote, which he will receive, he still needs the votes of the majority to win. So as I see it, Obama is just a novelity in todays political landscape.

Money, greed for money and power. When it comes down to what the working people want, forget about it. Politicians control them with the IRS.
Think about it, how, in even a presidential term can only 4 people be in the running for president? It doesn't make sense, there are always better choices. None of the above, or vote for someone CNN or FOX hasn't spread over their pages and be accused of "throwing away your vote". Next time tell them it's your vote, and it does count. It allows you the right to rant and rave about how the media and wealth put a masqueraded image into office. None of the current candidates in the running deserve a chance to govern America, at least not until they openly discuss how they will solve all the festering wounds America has now. The United States needs leaders, not politicians, and know that the team they are playing for are the working citizens of the United States.

He can talk all he wants, but I want someone that can make changes, and that someone is Hilary Clinton! Besides, by electing her, we will be getting two for one in the Whitehouse. Of course, Hillary hasn't really accomplished anything as a Senator, not that Obama has distinguished himself either. To what other Hillary experience do you refer? Is it Hillary's token stint with the Rose law firm, or her legendary prowess on the commodities market? Surely you cannot mean Mr. Clinton's two terms. With regard to being an unelected, non-staff hanger-on during her husband's administration, Hillary has the same amount of experience as the guy who cuts the grass at the White House. Or perhaps you would also contend that this anonymous landscaper, by virtue of his experience similar to Hillary's, is therefore qualified to be Secretary of Agriculture? The fact is, Hillary's so called executive branch experience makes he no more qualified to be President than a White House valet, cook or janitor; not to demean those noble professions!

It is not unreasonable to ask questions about his loyalties and sympathies but the "politically correct" crowd shun asking the tough questions. I'm proud to live in a country where a woman, a black man, a Catholic, a Baptist minister and a Mormon can run for the highest office in the land and be taken seriously and be real contenders BUT, we need to ask HARD quetsions. For example, when Hilary was first lady, it was reported in the news that she would have temper tantrums if anyone in uniform from the military came into the residential wing and FORBADE members of the military from entering their living quarters. Even if that story is only HALF true, how can we possibly consider having someone who feels that way in the office of Commander-in-Chief??? What about Obama's Muslim upbringing? What is his religious belief? Are any of these candidates atheists? I'm very live and let live on religion but not when it comes to national security.

Bill Richardson as VP to help give him administrative advice having been a governor and headed many government agencies. Gen. Wesley Clark as Secretary of Defense - a retired general not a draft dodger like Romsfeld. Sen. Joe Biden as Secretary of State - years of experience on foreign relations committee in the senate. And fightin John Edwards as Attorney General to finally tame the special interests. If Obama were to campaign in the general election with such a team he will be unstoppable unless the Republicans finally take advantage of the one way they can retain the Whitehouse - Impeach Bush and Chaney so they get some crediblity back. Otherwise they will be wandering in the political desert of the next 20 years.
Mary wrote on Jan 6, 2008 5:44 PM:To Jeannie - you are confusing Obama with a Muslim congressman from Minnesota - here are the facts on that story.
When he is sworn in as a member of the 110th U.S. Congress on Jan. 4, 2007, Congressman-elect Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) will not take the oath of office with his hand on a copy of the Koran - or any other book, according to a spokesman for Ellison, the first Muslim ever elected to the House of Representatives.
Ellison will not use any book during the ceremony, Dave Colling, who served as the Minnesota Democrat's campaign manager, told Cybercast News Service. "Neither will any other member of the House," Colling added, since "no one has ever taken the oath of office in Congress with a Bible, a Koran, a Torah or anything else."
Instead, the members of the chamber are sworn into office as a group, Colling noted. "They all raise their right hands and repeat the oath that's prescribed in the Constitution."
Please stop listening to Fix News - they are a propaganda machine and repeating what you hear there will only make you look foolish.

Hillary on the other hand has a good handle on the issues and the strength and committment to bring about the changes that we so desparately need. I don't know about you but I am working harder than ever and getting nowhere.
Bree wrote on Jan 9, 2008 9:28 AM:YAY for Hillary! Way to go in NH. She is the only one who can take the white house back for the Dems. Make no mistake about it- there is no way Obama can do the distance- the US is NOT ready for that, and I have some repub insider news that they want Obama to win the primaries so that they can smear him in the general elections... why? Because Hillary can win and he cant. plain and simple so please be careful what you read- San Diego Democrats are not stupid and are NOT going for someone who cannot get the white house.
Patriot wrote on Jan 9, 2008 1:12 PM:Well, Connie, I'm sure glad illegal immigration is not a problem in North County, as none of us need be concerned with Obama's position with regard to it. We should just focus on health care, the war, the economy, and how other countries feel about us, and ignore illegal immigration, right?

Paula wrote on Jan 9, 2008 7:44 PM:Bree, you are so right. I am so glad someone else sees what is going on. It terrifies me to think that they are going to try to to undermine the dems so they can have 4 more years of war, trying to push the middle class over the edge into plain old poverty, while making big business richer and more powerful. Who knows, maybe someday we'll be the United States. Inc.
I really think Obama is great but NOT NOW, we have a lot to lose here.
FOX wrote on Jan 9, 2008 8:14 PM:Hillary? No thanks!!! I'd rather have the kid next door who mows my lawn then to have her as President. I do not like her. I do not trust her. I believe she is on a power trip with an evil agenda!! Nonetheless, I'm not voting for Obama either.

Mary wrote on Jan 10, 2008 8:13 PM:To Bree - actually Edwards has the best healthcare plan - Single Payer Healthcare. We have a Single Payer Military - Pentagon pays and private sector competes for their money and we have the best military in the world. We can use the same model for healthcare - single payer federal government and private industry competes for the money. Right now we have hundreds if not thousands insurance companies dulling out the dollars and providers have to compete with each other many, many times over. Not very efficient.
eugene wrote on Jan 10, 2008 10:53 PM:Just what is the religion of Obama
In the past he has attended a Protestant church which in order to join you have to be Black. He also has ties to the Moslem faith. I seem to recall our troops are fighting against the terrorist who are also Moslem. He needs to explain just what faith is he, and why will he not respect our flag. Moslems are sworn to never honor the American Flag Is that a clue? I wonder!

What does that mean, I doubt even he knows.
CHANGE, what change?
I want the details, this is the most vapid campaign I've ever seen.
Two years out of the state senate and he's qualified to be President, NOT !

This is exactly the action that Obama is doing for the illegal aliens that have invaded, he wants to go ahead and give them drivers licenses for breaking the law. This is not the direction I want my country to go. We have established laws for a reason, for our safety and well being, when you break them you do not get rewarded for it. We need a president who is not going to be bought off, one with a backbone.
