San Diego Super Chargers

SUNDAY SLANT: TAKE 5

Finally, the longest preseason in NFL history is over. Everyone knows the Chargers' year will be graded on their postseason showing, not the regular season that produced an 11-5 mark. Staff writer Jay Paris looks at five reasons why the Chargers will sink the Titans today:

5. Football weather

Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain. Hearty Chargers fans can still see Marion Butts scampering down the middle of a soaked field at Jack Murphy Stadium for a career-best 54-yard run in a 17-0 wild-card win over the Chiefs during the 1992 playoffs.

4. Norv Turner

If Marty Schottenheimer - coach of the team Butts beat in 1992 - had a .500 playoff mark like Turner, he would still be roaming the sidelines at the "Q." If Turner is to have legs as a Chargers coach, he needs a win. And he has the smarts to do it.

3. A.J. Smith

Bent on changing his nickname, "Lord of No Rings," the Chargers' general manager swears to do his part. With officials looking the other way, he rubs down the football with his hair gel just before the Titans take possession.

2. Philip Rivers

With all this moisture in Mission Valley, what's better than a quarterback named Rivers? Look for Rivers to manage the game with panache, then go over his talking points with the losing Titans.

1. Karma's comeback

The Chargers have lost four straight playoff games, tied for the fourth-longest active streak in the NFL. To switch their luck, the Chargers swear not to raise ticket prices next season. Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?
