Southwest Riverside County School News: Chaparral High students excel

TEMECULA -- Chaparral High School announced that more than 100 students earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of exceptional achievement on the Advanced Placement Program exams.
The program offers students the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.4 million high school students in more than 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.
College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students' performance on AP exams.
Six students qualified for the AP National Scholar Award by earning an average grade of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and on eight or more of the exams. They are Nicolas Altemose, Zachary Fuller, Melissa Jamero, Gregory Maier, Andrew Tang and Daniel Waltrip.
Thirty-seven students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. They are Nicola Altemose, Ryan Baird, Anamariacora Bondoc, Maria Nina Bondoc, Rebekah Campbell, Zachary Fuller, Allison Gauss, Jesse Gomez, Adam Greene, Joshua Groeniger, Marissa Hastings, Laura Hoffman, Joseph Hong, Melissa Jamero, Thomas Krause, Hua Ling, Gregory Maier, Andrew Marnell, Shawnee McQuain, Jeanette Ortiz, Daniela Palmer, Kimberly Pike, Brianna Riley, Samantha Sanchez, Ryan Sanford, Kristin Schlansky, Shafat Sirajef, Lauren Smith, Tyler Smith, Jordan Stone, Jason Tak, Andrew Tang, Aleka Titzer, Caitlin Tremayne, Britt-Marie Varisco, Daniel Waltrip and Johnny Zhang.
Twenty students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. They are Yohanna Bernardo, Melody Castillo, Michiko Fuller, David Gross, Jeffrey Gruber, Sam Han, Kevin Hardy, Morgan Houston, Sabeen Khan, Isabel Rose Masanque, Jared May, Zachariah Merrill, Morgan Miralles, Christopher Nickelson, Nicholas Price, Brian Shughrou, David Stone, Emily Thompson, Bianca Torres and Alexis Watkins.
Seventy students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher. Open enrollment starts in Lake Elsinore
LAKE ELSINORE -- Open enrollment will be held today to Jan. 31 in the Lake Elsinore Unified School District.
In the open enrollment process, parents can apply for their children to go to a different school within the district. Due to growth, transfers to some schools may not be possible. A flier with the number of available spots will be posted at each school beginning Jan. 7.
Applications may be picked up at the Centralized Enrollment Center, 530 Chaney St., across the street from the district office.
Science texts available for review
MENIFEE -- Science textbooks for grades kindergarten through eight in the Menifee Union School District will be on display for public review from today to Jan. 18.
The district office is at 30205 Menifee Road, and the books will be in Room L.

Graduate programs subject of meeting
MURRIETA -- Azusa Pacific University is hosting a graduate information meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 16 at the its Murrieta Regional Center.
The center offers programs to obtain a variety of credentials, including a mater of arts degree in education, leadership and organizational studies.

SAT events offered at library
TEMECULA -- The Temecula Public Library will offer Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation activities in coming months.
Students can take a full-length practice SAT under the same testing conditions as the actual exam to learn endurance and the skills need to earn a high score.
Sessions are 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 31 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 22. Register by calling Princeton Review at 788-5992.
SAT strategy sessions, where test takers can get a personalized score report that shows strengths and weaknesses and learn ideas on how to improve their score will be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. both Feb. 12 and April 3.

Conference to addresses technology in education
MURRIETA -- Azusa Pacific University's Educational Technology and Learning master's degree program will host the Ed Tech and Learning Conference, Celebrating Technology in Education from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Murrieta Regional Center.
The conference features several sessions for beginning to advanced technology users, including how to enhance learning through blogs, videos and podcasts. The sessions, led by faculty, graduates, and current students, celebrate the effective use of technology tools in the classroom.
Terry Cannings, dean of the School of Education at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, will serve as the keynote speaker. Cannings is known as a visionary leader in the field of technology-enhanced classrooms.
Tickets are $25 if purchased before Jan. 10, and include lunch. Prices increase to $35 after Jan. 10.
