OCEANSIDE -- The American GI Forum Oceanside chapter will once again sponsor the biannual dinner, Mariachi Concert and Ballet Folklorico Tapatio scholarship fundraiser at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, 1290 Ivey Ranch Road.
The dinner concert with reserved seating is $25 per person. Proceeds will benefit the AVID program with support from San Diego Gas & Electric Co. AAUW group plans tea party
FALLBROOK -- The American Association of University Women will host its Tech Trek and Educational Foundation tea party at 10 a.m. Jan. 12 at the Fallbrook Woman's Club, 238 W. Mission Road.
The organization will honor the work done by the Educational Foundation, which provides funding for women who go on to do graduate work. Tech Trek is a program sponsored by AAUW that selects and sends girls entering the eighth grade, who have shown promise in math, science or technology, to a week-long program at UC San Diego.
Last year's Tech Trekkers will prepare a short talk on how the event benefited them. Susan Duling will chair the committee to select campers for this year's Tech Trek, and has organized the tea presentation.

Gem and mineral society to meet
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Gem & Mineral Society will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at 123 W. Alvarado St., the home of the society's museum.
Jesse Fisher will give a PowerPoint presentation titled "Fluorite From the North Pennines." Fisher, a longtime collector, has a master's degree in geology and is a partner in the specimen recovery at the Rogerley mine. He also has written many articles on Southern California pegmatites and their minerals, as well as North English fluorites for magazines such as Rocks and Minerals, Mineralogical Record and LeRegne Mineral.

Senior center plans Las Vegas, Grand Canyon trip
FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Senior Center is taking reservations for a five-day, four-night trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon from May 5 through 9. Cost is $379 per person, triple occupancy, two double beds; $399 per person, double occupancy; and $579 for single. Trip Protection Plan insurance is available.
The trip includes motorcoach transportation, four nights lodging including two consecutive nights in a Las Vegas Casino Hotel, two breakfasts, two dinners, gaming and sight-seeing on the Las Vegas Strip, a free day to shop, explore and discover Las Vegas, a visit to Laughlin, Nev., and view of the Colorado River, two nights at a Flagstaff, Ariz., hotel and a visit to Grand Canyon National Park, including an IMAX Grand Canyon movie.

DAR to hold student awards program
OCEANSIDE -- The Santa Margarita chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet Jan. 12 at the El Camino Country Club, 3202 Vista Way. Social time is at 9 a.m., with breakfast at 9:30 a.m., followed by the annual student awards program. A DAR Good Citizen Award will be given to a senior from El Camino, Oceanside and Carlsbad high schools and the Carlsbad Army and Navy Academy. The American History Award will be presented to an eighth-grade student from the Coastal Academy.

Entries sought for Miss O'side pageant
OCEANSIDE -- Applications are being accepted for the 2008 Miss Oceanside Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by the Oceanside Sea Lions. The pageant will be held at 7 p.m. April 19 at the James Truax Performing Arts Center at El Camino High School, 400 Rancho Del Oro.
Single girls between the ages of 16 to 24 (girls must be at least a junior in high school) living in Oceanside are eligible to enter. All contestants will receive six weeks of pageant training for personal interview technique, walking and stage presence, and confidence building.
The pageant will be judged on personality, poise, personal interview, impromptu question on stage and overall look. The queen will receive a cash scholarship as well as numerous prizes. Princesses also will receive prizes. Miss Oceanside and her court become good will ambassadors for Oceanside and appear at various charity events and city functions. Meet local authors Jan.17 at library
CARLSBAD -- The Cole Library will sponsor the author discussion featuring local authors Deke Houlgate and J. Stryker Meyer, moderated by mystery writer Taffy Cannon, at 7 p.m. Jan. 17 in the library's Community Room, 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive. Houlgate, motor sports writer for the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, was a reporter for the Las Vegas Sun and the Los Angeles Times. He authored "The Fastest Men in the World on Wheels," "The Complete Motorcycle Book" and "The Handbook on High Performance Driving." He will discuss his new book, "Blood on the Wall," about a sportswriter covering the Indianapolis 500.
Meyer is an Oceanside resident and North County Times columnist. A former Green Beret who served two tours of duty with Special Forces during the Vietnam War, he has written about his experiences in his two books, "Across the Fence" and "On the Ground."
Cannon's books include "Guns and Roses," "Open Season on Lawyers" (Best

Batiquitos Lagoon volunteer training
CARLSBAD -- The Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation is now taking applications for the 2008 volunteer training sessions. Sessions will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, Feb. 23 through April 12 at the Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Center, Gabbiano Lane. The training will provide an overview of the lagoon's habitat, its history and the foundation's role to preserve, protect and enhance this important ecological reserve. Volunteers needed to teach business skills
CARLSBAD --- The Communications Department of the city of Carlsbad is looking for volunteers to teach hands-on lessons to third-graders in Carlsbad schools about free enterprise and how local government works. The three-hour training session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, March 7, followed by six one-hour lessons in the classroom. Volunteers will be trained to use teacher-tested materials and are connected with a classroom teacher. Friends to host half-price book sale

Members of the Friends are invited to a preview sale from 5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 17. Nonmembers can join on the spot and take advantage of the sale. Every book in the Friends used book store at the library will be half price. John Wayne exhibit extended
VALLEY CENTER -- The John Wayne Centennial exhibit at the Valley Center History Museum, which was scheduled to close at the end of December, has been extended through June.
"More than 300 people showed up on opening day six months ago, and visitors continue to inquire about the display," said museum President Bill Hutchings.
Organized by curator Marjorie Deskovick, the show features personal mementos, memorabilia, photos and other items that document the years the actor lived, shopped and rode horseback in the Valley Center-Pauma Valley area.

Knitters, crocheters sought to help fire victims
POWAY -- The San Diego Wildfire Blanket Project will provide handmade blankets to more than 1,500 families who lost their homes in the wildfires. Knitted and crocheted squares have been donated from around the world, but volunteers are still needed to help make the blankets.
All knitters and crocheters are welcome to join in the project, regardless of skill level. Supplies will be provided to participants. Join in the opportunity drawing with all proceeds going directly back to the project for supplies.
