SAN DIEGO -- An Encinitas man was arrested Friday and an earlier suspect was released in connection with a bomb hoax that temporarily shut down the UCSD medical school last month, the FBI reported on Monday.
Richard Sills Jr., 54, a temporary employee in the university's Biomedical Science Building, was arrested by the Joint Terrorism Task Force after allegedly calling in bomb threats and planting a false explosive at the school on Dec. 5, authorities said.
The threats also included a letter to university police claiming that a group called the Animal Liberation Front had placed bombs in at least six campus buildings, an affidavit said.
According to the affidavit, three of the four phone threats were made from Sills' cell phone. Inside of Sills' home, investigators also found evidence including shotgun shells and a camping fuel tank consistent with those used in the fake bomb, the document said.
Authorities have since dismissed charges against Timothy Bryon Kalka, whom the task force arrested Dec. 8 following tips from the public, the FBI reported.
The case will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's San Diego office, the FBI said.
