The Blue Star Mothers of San Diego North County recently sent 300 boxes filled with holiday treats, decorations and cards to deployed military members in Iraq and Afghanistan. Items and monetary donations to help pay for postage were generously given by members of the community, including the students at Escondido Charter High School, who raised more than $650. A month-long competition to see which class could collect the most donations was won by Ms. Swabacker's first period class.
The local Blue Star Mothers chapter was founded in 2005 and now numbers 86 members from throughout Southern California. Besides monthly meetings at the Escondido American Legion, many activities are held to support the troops, including two more package mailings in the spring and summer.
The members recently helped 'deck the halls' of the San Diego Naval Medical Center Warrior building, which currently houses and provides medical services to about 145 seriously injured Marines, soldiers and sailors. Garlands were hung, trees were decorated, banners with messages of appreciation were taped to hallway walls and Christmas stockings filled with treats were handed out.
