Miss Fallbrook contestants sought

FALLBROOK -- Soroptimist International of Fallbrook, the nonprofit organization that sponsors the annual Miss Fallbrook pageant, has announced it will accept contestants through Feb. 1. The pageant will take place March 29.

Miss Fallbrook serves as an ambassador at numerous community events and participates in other events countywide. Miss Fallbrook 2008 will receive a $500 cash award and many other valuable prizes. The current Miss Fallbrook is Kate Derr.

An entrant should have excellent communication and social skills. Judging includes sportswear, evening gown and interview segments; there are no bathing suit or talent segments.

Contestants must reside in Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow, Pala or DeLuz. The participant age range is between 17 (and a senior in high school) and 24 by the date of the pageant. She must be single and never have had a child.

Computer workshop being offered

FALLBROOK -- Nonprofit SeniorNet will offer a free computer workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Fallbrook Healthcare Foundation at 135 S. Mission Road.

Volunteer Bob Cebulski will present "What a Personal Computer Can Do for You," covering basic word processing, sending and receiving e-mail, using the Internet, maintaining personal computer hardware and software and safeguarding personal data.

Attendees can also hear about the various SeniorNet classes that can help them pursue their individual computer-related interests.

Live Like a Champion Tour coming to Fallbrook

FALLBROOK -- The "Blue Cross Live Like a Champion Tour" will make a stop from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at the Fallbrook Community Center. Kids ages 5 to 12 can play games of football, basketball, soccer, volleyball and surfing and participate in activities such as Discovery Zone and Eat Like a Champion with prizes and giveaways.

The tour, which is part of the larger Blue Cross of California Childhood Obesity Initiative, will feature a branded Chevy Suburban and 20-foot trailer in its second year of operation, including interactive games and challenging sports-themed activities to help children bring out their "inner champion."

Tim Flannery to perform Jan. 19

FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Americana Music Series will present Tim Flannery and Friends in Concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Mission Theater, 231 N. Main St. Backing Flannery will be Dennis Caplinger on banjo, Jeff Berkley on bass and Sharon Whyte on accordion.

Flannery is a veteran of 25 years with the San Diego Padres, moving from player to coach to broadcaster. He has recently taken the post as third-base coach with the San Francisco Giants. Twelve years ago he answered the call of another constant in his life and began doing music seriously.

This concert is the first of the 2008 season presented in the Fallbrook Americana Music Series, a volunteer organization hosting acoustic, roots-based musicians, now in its eighth year. Art Campus to offer printmaking classes

FALLBROOK -- The Art Campus at Fallbrook, 310 E. Alvarado St., will offer the following classes during the spring semester.

  • Monotype and Beyond, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 26. Cost is $72, plus materials. Explore this quick process of making a unique print.

  • Polaroid Transfer and Mixed Media, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 18. Cost is $72, plus materials. Use Polaroid transfers and lifts as a jumping-off point to create multimedia works of art.

  • Intro to Etching, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 19. Cost is $82, plus materials. In this class, students will use the same kind of tools Rembrandt used to make their own zinc etching plate, after which they can use that plate to experiment with different printing methods.

    Artist to teach classes at community center

    FALLBROOK -- Fallbrook resident Martin Betz, a multimedia artist with an emphasis on sculpture, specifically electronic and video/film room installations, will teach the following classes at the Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane.

  • "Anyone Can Paint," from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 31 through Feb. 28. Learn to paint in either acrylic or oil paints in a friendly informative and supportive environment. Complete a painting by end of class. The class is for students at any level of skill and will support any special interests. Fee is $83, and a supply list will be given at registration.

  • "Skateboard Design," from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays, March 29 through April 19. Youths ages 15 to 17 can create original graphics for their skateboards. Students learn skateboard deck design, layout, stenciling, painting and application techniques. Designs must be original work, no trademarked graphics or logos can be used. Deck, trucks, wheels, bearings and grip tape are included. Fee is $93.

  • "Gizmos," from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 19 through Feb. 16. This class is for children ages 7 to 12 with great imaginations, who enjoy creating new projects. Participants will create a new "gizmo" every week from electric toys, solar projects or paddle boats. Fee is $63, plus a $10 supply fee paid to the instructor at the first class. Parents are encouraged to enroll with their children for an additional $5 charge.

    CERT team training to begin

    VISTA -- Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training will begin on Jan. 19. The class is offered free through Palomar College and the Vista Fire Department. This 30-hour class will teach citizens how to protect themselves, protect their homes and how to prepare for disasters. Local government agencies prepare for everyday emergencies. However, during a disaster, the number and scope of incidents can overwhelm conventional emergency services. This valuable course is designed to help protect families and neighbors during and after an emergency. People will typically respond to others in need of assistance and the goal of the CERT program is to provide citizens the information they need to assist in a safe manner. Citizens involved in CERT will be able to provide valuable assistance to those in need and provide pertinent information to emergency responders when they arrive. The classes taught in the program include basic disaster medical, fire safety, disaster psychology, light search and rescue and CERT organization.

    MS Society honors local resident/volunteer

    CARLSBAD -- The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Pacific South Coast chapter has named Carlsbad resident Sandi Kehoe, a volunteer who has multiple sclerosis, as its 2007 Programs Volunteer of the Year. The award was presented at the National MS Society's annual meeting of the Carlsbad-based Pacific South Coast Chapter. The National MS Society honored Kehoe, who was diagnosed with MS in October 2002, for her leadership of a self-help support group that meets on the second Wednesday of every month at Stagecoach Park. In addition, Kehoe teaches an Ah-Chi aquatic exercise class that meets on Tuesdays at the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA in Encinitas. Kehoe also is a volunteer in the chapter's Angel Visitation Program, which provides emotional support and companionship to homebound people with MS.

    Center to offer senior pilates

    Friends to host half-price book sale

    ESCONDIDO -- The Friends of the Escondido Public Library will hold a huge book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 18 and 19 at the library, 239 S. Kalmia St.

    Members of the Friends are invited to a preview sale from 5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 17. Nonmembers can join on the spot and take advantage of the sale. Annual membership is $5 for an individual, $7 for a family, $15 for a business and $25 for supporting membership. Lifetime membership is a one-time donation of $100 or more.

    Every book in the Friends used book store at the library will be half price. The book sale will feature a wide assortment of popular fiction titles, from classics to best selling authors, as well as nonfiction subjects, such as cook books and self-help books.     CPR, first-aid class slated

    Take a hike at Daley Ranch

    ESCONDIDO -- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch.

    All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least a two liters of water and wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed. Meet at La Honda Drive entrance, unless otherwise noted.

    Jazz guitarists to play Jan. 19

    ESCONDIDO -- Escondido Public Library's Literacy Services will host its fourth annual Scrabble-thon competition from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 2 at Emmanuel Faith Community Church, 639 E. Felicita Ave.

    Scrabble-thon is open to the public -- high school-age students and adults. The entry fee for teams of four is $100; individual entries cost $30. Entry registration will close Jan. 28.

    Proceeds will go toward providing literacy services in the community, benefiting adult learning communities, family literacy programming, mobile library services and early-learning labs. There also will be a multi-item raffle and a silent auction, featuring autographed items from Baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield.

    The group will welcome its new board of directors and President Lynn Ann Reagan, and listen to guest speaker Tony Krvaric, chairman of the Republican Party in San Diego. Krvaric, born and raised in Sweden, was inspired in his youth to come to America by President Ronald Reagan. He became a naturalized citizen in June of 2003, and has been politically involved since then.

    Kids can attend free cricket clinic

    RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- The Rancho Family YMCA and the San Diego Cricket Club will present a free cricket clinic from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Rancho Family YMCA's Scripps Poway Parkway site.

    The fun-based 90-minute clinic will introduce first- through fifth-graders to the basics of cricket in a noncompetitive atmosphere.     Kiwanis to host Padres luncheon fundraiser

    Free watercolor classes to begin

    NORTH COUNTY -- Free watercolor classes taught by Nancy Oleksa will be offered through Palomar College.

    The 16-week classes will meet from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. Tuesdays, starting Jan. 22, at Mt. Carmel High School; 9 to 11:50 a.m. Thursdays, starting Jan. 24, at the Ramona Senior Center; 1:30 to 4:20 p.m. Thursdays, starting Jan. 24, at the Poway Senior Center; and 9 to 11:50 a.m. Fridays, starting January 25, at Palomar College's Escondido campus.
