Credibility of Iraq study questioned
For over a year, the left has been touting the Lancet study of deaths in Iraq. Now the National Journal has reviewed the string of evidence leading to the 650,000 number and found its credibility seriously lacking. First, the study funding came from George Soros.
Second, the two co-authors openly stated that they opposed the war and that the study had to be published before the 2006 U.S. elections. The editor of the Lancet expedited the article into print without the usual peer-review process to meet the election deadline and stated his opposition to the war.
Third, the key Iraqi researcher used to work for Saddam and refused to publish his data set for inspection, as is custom. It is fine for anyone to have an opinion, but for the Lancet, an esteemed journal, to have so sullied its reputation for political reasons is contemptible.

Decline and fall of America?
In eight decades this writer has never before felt such concern for the future of this country. Why is this so? Well, I listen to Glenn Beck, monitor the Townhall Web site ... and read books such as Mark Steyn's "America Alone" and Michelle Malkin's "Invasion." ...
Our elected officials are either overcome by lust for power of office or lack a third-grader's knowledge of economics. Democrats especially spend money as if there is an inexhaustible supply. Proposed future spending ignores the fact that our indebtedness and future requirements to fund Medicare, Social Security, interest on debt payments and sundry unfunded liabilities mean that we are in deep trouble.
Our "representatives" refuse to propose sensible solutions to our energy crisis. Our population is rapidly foreshadowing factions of Muslims, blacks and mostly illegal Hispanics fighting for their share of power and benefits. The American so-called Civil Liberties Union contests any sensible proposals to control illegal immigration and any role for religion and morality in public life. As our officials delay action, compounding of liabilities for future needs and debt repayment, we rapidly approach national bankruptcy. Solutions anyone?

Willing suspension of disbelief
As Iraq ticks off another political goal, and it becomes obvious that Democrats can't continue the charade that the surge hasn't been successful, I've been wondering what spin they would come up with to save face. In my wildest imagination I never expected Hillary's bizarre revisionism. The next time Bill decides to label anyone's rhetoric a fairy tale, he should watch Hillary on "Meet the Press." Hillary now admits there's been security and political gains. But not because of our troops or the Iraqis. Her delusional reason for the progress is because she is running for president. She actually said that the Iraqis are making progress because they know the election is coming and "they listen to every word I say." Talk about requiring a willing suspension of disbelief!
Let's set the record straight. When Hillary voted to send our troops to war, nobody was more hawkish. But when it became a political liability, she thought nothing of cutting our troops off at the knees. Disgusting.
Sorry, Hillary. Iraq's success is not because of you, it's despite you. The last thing our country needs is a delusional narcissistic commander in chief who makes military decisions based on political aspirations.

Gambling is not the answer to state's problem
It amazes me to think that Gov. Schwarzenegger and the fools around him will settle California's budget problems by expanding the Indian casino slot machine capacity. Gambling produces nothing but low-income jobs and empties a lot of poor losers' pockets.
The North County Times published a follow-up story about the poster girl who first promoted reservation gambling to help her tribe get out of poverty. As I remember, in that article she stated that after years of big-dollar profits for the tribe, her life has not improved ("Hunger strike, vigil stress tribe's outrage over casino denial," Aug. 26, 2006).
Billions of dollars for Californians is what the governor said, but maybe he doesn't realize the reality of whose pockets those billions comes from. The people who go to these casinos don't go for entertainment but go in the hope of being up on a freeway billboard in a pile of money ññ I won millions! That only happens once in a billion, the rest of the gamblers go broke, and some lives are destroyed forever.
If you want to improve the budget and help the economy, stop the export of manufacturing jobs to Communist China and get it back here. Create jobs, not hardships. Vote no on all propositions to expand gambling ññ it's bad for Californians.

How does this personally harm anyone?
This is in response to the writer who complained about Escondido businesses attracting Spanish-speaking customers by using their language in addition to English (Letters, Jan. 12).
My question to this writer, and all others who share this mind-set, is this: How are you personally being harmed by this? I don't want to hear the usual vague platitudes and tired talking points. I want specifics.
So please set aside your righteous indignation and ridiculous comparison to our flag being ripped in half. No one is forcing you to read or understand or speak Spanish. I repeat: How are you personally being harmed by this?

Ron Paul is winning converts
Our country no longer resembles the nation our Founding Fathers envisioned, fought and died for. Pre-emptive, undeclared wars, Federal Reserve inflation, massive deficit spending funded by China, our currency, financial and real estate markets in free fall, rampant corporatocracy and empire building, lost sovereignty due to NAFTA, CAFTA, WTO and the U.N., pervasive abuses of power, oppressive taxation to pay for the welfare of millions of illegal aliens invaders, the Clinton and Bush presidential dynasties (1988 to present) and a secretive movement to establish a North American Union/NAU (see www.spp.gov) tell many we are in serious jeopardy and that our Founding Fathers would be grieved.
Presidential hopefuls Giuliani, McCain, Huckabee, Clinton and Obama represent a continuation of these failed policies and abuses. Revolutionary candidate Ron Paul, who in one day alone (Dec. 16) set the historical record for [online] donations with over $6 million, and who was banned by the Fox debate in New Hampshire in spite of the fact he's beating Thompson and challenging Giuliani, is winning converts across the nation and in every age and demographic group.

Make Escondido a city to be proud of
Escondido has many reasons to be proud of its citizens' involvement in local government and community issues, and it gives us a voice in making a difference right where we live.
As the city clerk of Escondido, I'm proud of the volunteers who have served in many vital capacities throughout our community.
Escondido residents and business owners have a unique opportunity to volunteer their time and talent by applying to serve on one of the city's 12 boards and commissions. Recruitment is currently under way, and it presents a positive way to get involved in shaping our city's future.
Information and an application are available on Escondido's Web site at www.ci.escondido.ca.us/government/boards/index.html. Or call the city offices at (760) 839-4617. Hurry ññ applications should be received no later than Friday, Jan. 18, in order to be included in the current interview process.
There are openings on all committees; however, there's a special need for people to serve in the areas of Community Services, Community Safety, Historic Preservation, Personnel and Senior Services. This is a chance to become involved in making Escondido a city we are all truly proud of. Don't let this opportunity pass you by!

Bush, Cheney should be in prison
I am in total agreement that Bush and Cheney should not only be impeached, but spend time in prison for warrantless wiretapping as well as other established charges. I further believe that anyone aiding and abetting them should also be fined and imprisoned. That means members of Congress.

It's time for us to boycott talking vaginas
Valentine's Day approaches and Eve Ensler's at it again raising money for domestic violence shelters with her misogynistic play "The Vagina Monologues."
Greg Scharf states in his Jan. 11 column "Benefit event to avoid" that the printed version has some valuable topics, "such as the rape camps in Bosnia and the horrors of female circumcision ..." But, Scharf continues, "The play turns pornographic, bordering on criminal. "The Little Coochie Snorcher That Could" celebrates the lesbian rape of a 13-year-old girl by a 24-year-old neighbor who plies her with vodka to seduce her. In prior performances, I understand, the closing line was "if it was a rape, it was a good rape."
Ensler, in "My Angry Vagina Monologue" says, "My vagina's angry ... My vagina's furious and it needs to talk ... It needs to talk to you. I mean, what's the deal -- an army of people out there thinking up ways to torture my poor-ass, gentle, loving vagina ..."
Ensler's anger popularized society's denial of vaginas. It's hard to know what she did in past lives, but as a drop-out legal eagle turned dominatrix perhaps she met up with Freud somewhere or took notes for the Marquis de Sade. She certainly had a sizable load on when conjuring the "Vagina Monologues."
One problem most men have is their quest to return from whence they came, to a vagina. It seems Ensler's quest is the same, batteries and pedophilia included.
Please boycott talking vaginas and their monologues. They just aren't right.

Columnist distorts play's message
How convenient that Mr. Greg Scharf points out in his Jan. 11 column the dark parts of the "The Vagina Monologues" to make his point on how disgusting the play is, how demeaning to men it is. To say such is to basically discourage audiences from seeing movies such as "Die Hard," "Rambo," and "Lethal Weapon" because of the intense profanity, the senseless killings, the complete stereotyping of ethnic and gender groups, and encouragement of total destruction of property. To do so ignores the struggle of good and evil, the bonding of male friendships and the essence of brotherhood. This is what Mr. Scharf has chosen to ignore in his tasteless examination of "The Vagina Monologues": the exploration, the struggle and the resolve of what it is to be female.
Sadly, what Mr. Scharf opportunely neglects to mention are the beautifully written monologues celebrating womanhood including, but not limited to, the awe-inspiring experience of giving birth, the witty and playful child's eye view and the intensely erotic experience of a woman finding herself beautiful for the first time. And what is at the center of helping this woman find her beauty? The loving caresses and glances of a man.
Yes, Valentine's Day is a day to celebrate one's love for another. However, there is no greater show of love for one's female partner than a man forgoing the standard chocolates, flowers and dinner in lieu of encouraging her, if she so wishes, to be at a performance where she is completely understood for not who she is, but what she is: female.

President can't have it both ways
While I applaud President Bush's stance on human rights as it pertains to Iran, I am left bewildered by the lack of consistency by which it is applied. As he moves through the Middle East, championing the cause of democracy, our military support of nations such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and others, whose social policies are nearly identical to those of Iran, makes the rhetoric ring rather hollow. Either a nation is sovereign and determines social policy as it sees fit, or there is a basic and fundamental level of human rights we all possess.
It's one or the other; President Bush cannot have it both ways.

Fresh from the Web:
'Fight club' case comes before judge today
Readers responded to an article Tuesday on the Murrieta "fight club" case in which the remaining defendants were to make pleas today or face a preliminary hearing:
Over the top
Amazed: This whole thing was way overblown. Eighty percent of the kids/men involved were just being dumb kids and in no way were a street gang. This is another classic case of Murrieta PD being over the top to make headlines. ...
Go to jail
Let this be a warning to gangs or wannabees: Murrieta PD is doing exactly what the community wants it to do. We will not stand for gangs in our community or gang wannabees. ... If you fool around with this kind of nonsense in Murrieta, you go to jail. ...
Real story
"Fight Club" the book: ... is not about fighting. ... The real story is about the main character's descent into ... violence and delusions. ... If you are picking fights on the streets with total strangers there is something wrong with you. ...
What we want
It was the DA not MPD: ... It is not the PD that determines the charges. It is the district attorney. The police are aggressive with teens and young adults in our area because we ... want the cops to be aggressive and we want the DA to be aggressive, too. ...
Canine commemoration: K-9 units pay tribute to Stryker, fallen Oceanside police dog
Readers respond to our Jan. 15 story about a funeral service for Stryker, the Oceanside police dog who died after falling from the Coronado Bay Bridge on New Year's Eve, drawing about 100 police dogs and their handlers to North County from throughout Southern California.
Good to share
Nice job: I'm glad the other handlers were able to come down and share this ceremony. Hope it leads to some closure for all.
Not forgotten
DJ: Excellent job, Stryker! You served up your heart and we will all cherish your unselfishness. Thank you, Officer Sadler, for mentoring an outstanding fellow officer. Well done! We DO NOT forget!
Lost a good one
A sigh of relief: Criminals breathe easier now that the most productive officer -- human or dog -- on OPD is now laid to rest. From the stats he put up, he should have been wearing a hat and driving the car!
For a dog?
Jaque: Really, this officer crying at a "service" for a police dog? Having a "service" with the posed picture of the dog for every local news agency to see and subsequently paste our 6 p.m. news with? Gimme a break. Only in America.
Don't worry
Just A Thought: For those of you who are complaining about all the tax payer money this is causing, which is none -- there is a special section of the penal code which stipulates that anyone convicted of killing a police dog has to pay restitution to the department. Guess your tax problem is solved. Can you find another argument for your hate now?
Fire watch specialist skipped rounds, falsified records at nuclear plant
Readers respond to our Jan. 15 story about federal regulators saying a worker trained to watch for fires at the San Onofre nuclear power plant falsified records and skipped hourly rounds on "numerous occasions" for more than five years, prompting several changes at the nuclear plant
Worth it
Bo: How much does it cost to install check-in stations to ensure security guards or inspectors actually make their rounds? Pretty much a no-brainer when security is so important!
Pointless
John: This was going on for more than five years? Well I certainly hope that they are not going to refill that position. They obviously don't need someone there, it sounds like a waste of our tax paying money.
Hardly working
Come on: The falsified logs didn't matter because they have a host of other systems? Then why pay this position? What a scam to the tax payers and rate payers. Maybe this person's paychecks for the last five years need to be falsified, too. How hard is it to do the job your paid for?
D'oh!
Unless: Is this guy's name Homer Simpson by any chance?
Escondido getting fourth Latino-themed supermarket
Readers respond to our Jan. 15 story about Vallarta Supermarkets, a fast-growing, Latino-themed supermarket chain from Los Angeles, planing open its first San Diego County location in April in eastern Escondido, giving the city four supermarkets catering to Latino customers.
Can't ignore any more
Randy: It's about time the city council take note of the fact that Latinos comprise a significant portion of their constituency!
Simple economics
bryan: It's supply and demand. The land was available and no one else wanted it. But of coarse none of the upper-scale retailers want to come to Escondido. The median income in Escondido is way too low to support a traditional retail store or a big box store. Get used to it -- this is the best Escondido can do.
Hooray!
Good!: I think it is time that we begin to service the largest entity in our community. For so long this group has been ignored and undeserved. Frankly, I shop at those Latino stores more than I do at regular grocery stores. The employees are friendly and helpful. I find more of what I need. I love it.
Too much
the real issue: Do we really need another grocer? I mean really, regardless of language or product placement, enough already of the grocery stores! They should have kicked out the one grocer who opposed the Wal-Mart, then built the Wal-Mart. Those things must be cash cows.
Don't forget
Jaque: Remember these types of things when Lori Holt runs for re-election. That do-nothing mayor is past her time. Thank God for Sam. When driving by the schools in the mornings, just what do you see? Think about it!

DD Wiz wrote on Jan 15, 2008 11:12 PM:The post from "Reardon" (1/15 - 8:23pm) (hero to "hardtack" (7:19pm) who last embarrassed himself by saying that democracy and equality of opportunity are incompatible by quoting -- a guy who wrote a book supporting a return to monarchy) gives up on trying to find answers to his simple questions, proving he has absolutely no ability to perform the simplest research, now, amazingly admits he will answer his own questions! In other words, he can't do the research, so he admits he is going to MAKE UP HIS OWN ANSWERS. (Actually, the last time "Reardon" tried to find peer-reviewed sources, he ended up quoting three popular media articles and the eulogy of someone who had been a scientist.)
While I am getting tired of bailing him out doing his research for him, I'm such a softie I'm going to help him out again. He asks what the current Global Temperature is, and since he can't find it, he MAKES UP the answer that there is no such thing! According to NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Earth Sciences Directorate, the Mean Global Temperature as of 2004 was 14.60 degrees Celsius (58.28 degrees Fahrenheit). http://data.giss.nasa.gov/
Second, "Reardon" asks what is the percentage of such change attributable to human activity. He shoots from the hip again, however a review of many articles that ALL ACKNOWLEDGED HUMAN CONTRIBTING CAUSATION, none I could find (doesn't mean none exist, I only checked a few out of several thousand) had one percentage for all factors. However, different studies analyzed different factors, and had very specific quantifications for specific causes, such as deforestation, factory emissions, internal combustion, etc. While specific factors could be found, I did not quickly find a single percentage factor.
Third, "Reardon" asks about predictions and claims that: "Science does not “predict.” That is not its function." While it is true that science does not make specific predictions, its function of analysis does include recognition of trends, and in order to apply data to decision making in realistic terms, it does make recommendations that if such and such continues, such and such is a likely consequential outcome. No once claims absolute knowledge of what will come in the future. But it is foolish to ignore warnings and do nothing, especially since solutions to global climate crisis have NO DOWNSIDE, but failure to follow them, even if there is no merit whatsoever, still results in increased air and water pollution, and increased dependence on buying energy from dictators and terrorists.
Again, come clean: what is your interest in promoting continued pollution and dependence on dictators and terrorists?
DD Wiz wrote on Jan 15, 2008 11:13 PM:The post from "theWolf" (1/15 - 8:15pm) also immediately proves my point by providing a new example, so more conservatives merit special appreciation. Thanks to you, too, "theWolf," for proving my point. He throws out numbers but, unlike me (when I cite numbers I show a government statistical source), offers not source or reference. Looks like he just made it up. Points for creativity, though. But even so, he does exactly what I said he would! He is so predictable! He wants to talk about share of taxes, with no documentation for his claim, of course, although after he bragged about the "expertise" he acquired from his service with the Concord Coalition, as in Concord Grapes, presumably named for the SOUR GRAPES of its founders who proved they knew nothing about economics by trying to obstruct Bill Clinton who actually reduced deficits and created surpluses. From there he goes downhill, refusing to provide the context. He does not indicate the corresponding share of income, or the share of benefit received from resources protected by government paid for by those taxes. He does not understand that discussing the fairness of "income tax" has to discuss both income and tax, not just tax. And, again, you have to document what you say because we don't trust your fertile imagination.
"theWolf" makes assumptions, by asking what I have against the rich. But I notice he doesn't cite anything I've actually said, he just makes things up like other conservatives here. I support all members of the productive team rising together. The real question is, what does he have against the workers and consumers and small business owners (entrepreneurs) like me, who are actually the ones who fuel the economic engine and create prosperity. Why does he think a few wealthy should get all the wealth that is created by the people who work for them and the consumers who create market demand?
"theWolf" further demonstrates his complete lack of understanding of how wealth is formed and prosperity created. He asks "Who starts companies, invests their money in the market." He thinks "rich people" create jobs! This is the failed Concord Coalition thinking that causes depressions and obstructs real prosperity. Rich people do not give people jobs out of the goodness of their hearts. They see economic DEMAND and respond to it. Even if they don't have cash available, if they see a market need (demand) they will borrow if they have to, in order to fill that need. That DEMAND occurs when CONSUMERS want to buy things AND HAVE MONEY TO SPEND. That means that working people, who are the largest slice of the consumer population, have to have money. If workers are treated well, they can be consumers and provide the DEMAND which fuels the need for supply, and then people need to be hired to supply goods and services to meet that demand. Supply and Demand. Workers and Consumers. That is what fuels the economy. It is "bubble up" not "trickle down." Your very question and your admitted ties to the failed Concord Coaltion confirm how little you understand of economics.
DD Wiz wrote on Jan 15, 2008 11:14 PM:The post from "sdraoul" (1/15 - 8:02pm) merits special appreciation, so a big "Thank you" to "sdraoul." YET AGAIN, as he has many times, he takes someone who was a true American hero in his youth, first as a war hero risking his life to save another in combat under fire, and then, with no possibility of personal gain, had the courage to speak out about the truth in Congressional hearings. He attacks, attacks, attacks, and drags a war hero's name through the mud, over and over, but never backs it up with a credible source. Oh, he does provide a source, IT IS THE SWIFT BOAT HIT SQUAD! The FACT is, military experts after a careful, detailed review, awarded John Kerry 3 Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star (with V for Valor) and a Silver Star. With no specific example, he accuses me of "smearing American veterans" while he is the one diminishes and cheapens the value of hard-earned medals by dismissing them as essentially "giveaways." He has noted in this very forum that he served safely away from combat years before the Vietnam War, yet calls himself a "Vietnam era veteran" on a technicality to qualify for extra benefits. He notes he never earned one of the "throwaway" medals he dismisses as being so cheaply won. Disgraceful. For the umpteenth time, Mr. "sdraoul," explain why you know more than military experts who issued these awards, and provide evidence from a credible source, not a hit squad.
DD Wiz wrote on Jan 15, 2008 11:15 PM:The posted response from "RobertM" (1/15 - 6:45pm) whines about "anger and angst." Liberals angry? After all the name-calling, made-up "facts" and hateful, malicious rantings and character assassinations from conservatives, they have a lot of nerve to talk about "anger" by a liberal. Actually, I'm mostly a pretty laid-back, easy going, pleasant guy. Some would even call me, uhm, "sunny." But actually, yeah, there are a few things one could be angry about. I am angry about a government that lies repeatedly to its people and lowers American respect and pride around the world. I am angry with an administration that, relying on a need for an ignorant populace it can manipulate, fosters a war on science. I am angry at an administration in bed with Big Oil profiteers, promoting pollution and destruction of our environment, damage to our climate, and requiring us to wallow in energy from filthy fossil fuels when cleaner, cheaper alternatives are readily available. I am angry at an administration that wages war on the middle class, squeezing us for more taxes, fees and expenses while lavish tax giveaways to the few richest elites, and shipping middle-class jobs overseas, while importing cheap labor by illegal immigrants, taking advantage of their illegal status to ensure that they won't seek redress for their slave conditions. And yes, I am definitely angry about a needless war that has wantonly taken the lives of almost 4,000 brave American heroes and wounded and maimed thousands more, and many times more than that among the population we invaded. You people who callously disregard the enormity of this tragedy because it hasn't touched YOUR life individually are heartless elitists who think that the lives of poor soldiers are just fodder for your whims. If you don't have some anger, you haven't been paying attention.

The banks are now struggling to fulfill their function as the main conduit for providing credit to consumers and businesses. Wow? No downside whiz says, but is it true? Hardly... the leftists want to follow the The European Union in a carbon tax and levies in their emissions trading scheme. Started January 2005, this regime
taxes the burning of all fossil fuels — coal, gasoline, aviation fuel, and natural gas. How many low & middle income people heat their homes by coal fire power plants? Or drive their cars to work, or their kids to the doctor? Go to Grandma's for Thanksgiving by plane? Or shower themselves with water heated by natural gas? Or dry their clothes? Each time you do one, or all of these activites, the government gets yet another tax, a new tax. How regressive a tax do you think that will be? Not to mention, a car. Think of all the fuel required to produce that one car, and the amount of carbon taxes added to the cost of it. And with these newer cafe standards passed by the Democrats, in order to achieve the mileage, lots of steel will be replaced by plastic, and the size and weight of the car will get smaller. Think of the French-made cars that Inspector Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther Films drove. Those tiny little beer cans. How do you think you'd fair in a 60-mph crash? These actions will have a direct affect on everyone. Especially those can afford it least.
No downside... my eye. And once in, you'll never get rid of it. My example: a 3 percent federal excise "luxury" tax on long-distance service, the origins of which date back to 1898 to help pay for the Spanish-American War. Since when is it a "luxury" to call Grandma on Christmas? But, do you see how these "luxury taxes" hit everyone? Not just the "Rich?" AND... After losing several court battles... Let me say this again! "After losing SEVERAL court battles, which means even though the war had been paid for many, many, many, mnay times over... the U.S. Treasury said it would stop the tax, and provide refunds to consumers in 2005. The actual "War" last only 5 months, but Americans have paid the tax since 1898.
What is that? 1898.... 2005... that's 107 years folks! a 107 years at 3% for a war that lasted 5 months. That's quite a profitiable enterprise, wouldn't ya say? No downside... get a clue whiz.

Well, Frank, it seems the Demos don't need to spin because our own federal Government Accountability Office is doing that. According to the Bush Administration in it's last "benchmark" report on Iraq in September, the Iraqi government had spent about 24 percent of their 2007 capital projects budget as of July 15, indicating that the Baghdad government was making progress in managing its budget. These are expenditures for infrastructure needed to boost the country's lagging economic growth and to improve public services...what Frank would call the "ticking of another political goal". The GAO says that the Bush Administration's report is NOT consistent with Iraq's OFFICIAL EXPENDITURE REPORTS, which show that the Iraqi central ministries had spent ONLY 4.4 percent of their investment budget as of August. As for failed economics, the Concord Coalition supports tax cuts for the rich and slashing benefits for the middle class -- hurting the very core of the economic engine that needs to be stimulated to engender real prosperity. He says he "will be proven right in the end" but the verdict is already in. Under Democrats we have seen recovery, prosperity and budget surpluses. GFN (8:38 AM) and Douglas Wolf (letter today) need to probe more deeply, and define their terms. DEFINE YOUR TERMS. It is true: over one million Iraqis have died as a result of the Bush War. And the UN report of only 150,000 dead is also correct. These two studies are simply measuring two different things. The UN study makes a narrow measurement of how many Iraqis were killed violently from bullets and bombs. The Lancet medical journal was a broad measure of “excess deaths”, meaning the number of deaths that would not have occurred based on conditions during pre-war period. The 655,000 figure in the Lancet study includes deaths from all war causes, including starvation, disease, premature births and deaths due to depleted uranium, waterborne diseases resulting from the US destruction of water purification and sanitation infrastructure, and from unavailability of medicines and medical treatment.
Furthermore, the Lancet study of 655,000 is almost two years old; the latest Lancet estimate of “excess deaths” has now reached 1.2 million. Whether these people were killed by bullets, bombs, disease, starvation or DU, they are quite dead - and would not have been except for the Bush War. After all, Bush could define terms of his own “study” which gave an estimate of only 30,000 killed. Perhaps he was including only confirmed body count of Al Qaeda wearing uniforms - or only those males of combat age - or God only knows what narrow criteria. You can be quite sure the Bush figure did not include unborn fetuses of women killed in American bomb attacks on civilians. The number of EXCESS DEATHS in the Bush War is 1.2 million.

I keep hearing this nonsense about their going to close the corporate tax loopholes, and blah, blah, blah.
First of all, these are not "middle-class jobs", they are not owned nor are they operated by any middle-class people. They are positions within a company, and that position is not for the government to give, or to take. It's simply "not their's." The only real jobs a government does have control over are those in government, or government contracts. But that's it. If I decided tomorrow that I would move my business to Nevada because I believe the cost of doing business their is cheaper, what is California going to do to stop me? That's right. Nothing. Because I'm small. If I were larger, then I'd probably get the attention of the city, or county. And if even larger, maybe the State. They would then offer me incentives to stay, just to keep the jobs here. that would be providing their not some silly green's who thought my type of business was "dirty", and didn't want it anyways. Incentives, i.e. tax breaks might help to reduce the cost of manfacture or service of operating inside the United States, but
if the net offset is not enough, or the cost of producing in China is actually cheaper.. you tell me what is a government going to do to keep that job here? Huh? In China, they don't have government retirements, or excessive regulations, or all the other costly hoop jumping required here. This whole "shipping jobs overseas" actually began in the 70's. And as the other nations around the world have gained on technology, the quality of their products have also improved. We see it directly, Japanese cars routinely beat US made cars because they are better made cars for the same cost. If you close the loopholes, you will actually see an increase in defections.
