Chargers scouting report: At New England Patriots

By: MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | Tuesday, January 15, 2008 11:15 PM PST

Kickoff: Noon on Sunday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

Series: New England leads 19-14-2. The Patriots routed the Chargers 38-14 on Sept. 16 in Foxborough. The two teams also met in last season's playoffs, with New England prevailing 24-21 on Jan. 14, 2007 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Player to watch: QB Tom Brady

It's going to be hard for Brady to top his epic performance against Jacksonville this past Sunday. He completed 26-of-28 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns. The 92.9 completion percentage is the best single-game mark in NFL history. Brady hit his first 16 passes before finally throwing his first incompletion more than four minutes into the third quarter. The other incompletion came when Wes Welker dropped a pass. The 30-year-old Brady is the most clutch quarterback in the game, having won three Super Bowl rings and guided 28 game-winning fourth-quarter drives in his eight-year career. The player headed to his fourth Pro Bowl stepped up his game to legendary levels this season by throwing an NFL-record 50 touchdown passes while winning league MVP honors. Amazingly, he passed for three or more touchdowns in 10 consecutive games, another NFL record. Brady finished the regular season with 4,806 passing yards, third most in NFL history. In the Patriots' victory over the Chargers earlier this season, Brady completed 25-of-31 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns.

Offense

The Patriots set an NFL record by scoring 589 points in the regular season, an average of 36.8 points per contest. Brady wasn't the only offensive player who enjoyed an epic season. Pro Bowl WR Randy Moss was rejuvenated by his trade from the Oakland Raiders and set an NFL record with 23 touchdown receptions. He caught 98 passes for a team-record 1,493 yards and topped 100 yards in a game nine times. How about the season put together by Welker? Once cut by the Chargers, Welker was acquired from lowly Miami in the offseason and set a franchise record with 112 receptions, tying for the league leadership with Cincinnati's T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Welker had 1,175 yards and eight touchdowns. Another valuable wideout is Donte' Stallworth, who had 46 catches from 697 yards. The Patriots' top running back is Laurence Maroney, who rushed for 835 yards and six scores. New England also has one of the top offensive lines in football. The unit allowed just 21 sacks, and T Matt Light, G Logan Mankins and C Dan Koppen are all headed to the Pro Bowl.

Defense

New England's defense is loaded with stars and experienced veterans. The unit had 47 sacks, second most in the NFL. Up front, DT Vince Wilfork is a force in the middle and will start next month's Pro Bowl. Five-time Pro Bowl DE Richard Seymour rebounded from an early-season injury to maintain his status as one of the NFL's top defensive linemen. Pro Bowl OLB Mike Vrabel is equally good in coverage and rushing the passer. He had a career-high 12 1/2 sacks, which ties for third most in Patriots history, and also forced four fumbles. The only Patriot to record more sacks in a season is current Hall of Fame finalist Andre Tippett, who had 18 1/2 in 1984 and 16 1/2 in 1985. OLB Adalius Thomas had a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Chargers in September. He was playing inside linebacker at that time but moved to an outside spot when Rosevelt Colvin was lost for the season. Veterans ILBs Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau have seen anything an offense might try in their combined 30 years in the league. Seau, the former Chargers star and Oceanside High graduate, had three

interceptions this season. Another former Chargers standout, S Rodney Harrison, is headed to the Hall of Fame. He's the only safety in NFL history to record at least 30 career interceptions (he has 33) and 30 sacks (currently at 30 1/2). CB Asante Samuel tied for fifth in the NFL with six interceptions and is one of the top cover corners in the NFL. CB Randall Gay had three picks.

Noteworthy

The Patriots are playing in the AFC Championship Game for the fifth time in seven seasons. They have a 3-1 record in the other four contests. ... New England's 16-0 regular-season record marked just the fourth time in NFL history that a team put together an unbeaten regular season. Only the 1972 Miami Dolphins continued through the playoffs without a loss. The Chicago Bears of 1934 and 1942 lost in the NFL Championship Game after an unblemished regular season. ... New England CB Antwain Spann is an El Camino High graduate. It was Spann who crashed into Eric Parker in last year's playoff game to keep Parker from recovering the punt he muffed. The Patriots recovered and added a field goal. ... New England has a 10-1 record in home playoff games and has won the last 10. The loss was to the Houston Oilers during the 1978 postseason. ... New England coach Bill Belichick has a 14-3 record in the postseason as a head coach. The 14 victories rank fifth in NFL history.

Well here comes the shawn's and Cromartie defence... herecomes a slow march down the field and score keeping the Brady man on the sideline like Manning... HERE COMES THE BOLTS!!!!

sjboltsfan wrote on Jan 16, 2008 10:08 AM:Wow! They forgot to point out their Coach of the Year (Belecheat), #1 fan base in the league (they have nothing but nice things to say about their team's opponents), and they all floss twice every day!

Who cares! It all comes down to execution on gameday, and if the Bolts can keep turnovers @ mistakes down to a minimum, they have a very good chance of pulling out the most unbelieveable, historic playoff upset ever!

Weather forecast: High 16 degress, gusty winds. Good running weather - horrible passing weather. LT, MT and DS should have a good day.

ROFL wrote on Jan 16, 2008 10:16 AM:BoltDan: "Who did they play this year?"

You forgot:
* Dallas Cowboys (1st ranked NFC team)
* Indianapolis Colts (2nd ranked AFC team)
* SanDiego Chargers (3rd ranked AFC team)
* Pittsburgh Steelers (4th ranked AFC team)
* New York Giants (5th ranked NFC team)
* Jacksonville Jaguars (6th ranked AFC team)

On top of that they had a gruelling schedule with a ton of night games, and several games that could easily be described as "smashmouth" (ie Colts, Ravens, Steelers and Giants).

...and how did they perform? THEY WON 'EM ALL!

Oh, as a point of reference, the Patriots net points for the season was 315. To put that in perspective, it's only ONE point shy of what you get when you add the second and third highest net point teams in the AFC TOGETHER! (Indianapolis Colts-188 and SanDiego Chargers-128)

So, uh, yea, good luck on Sunday, with Rivers, Tomlinson and Cromartie all gimped, you're REALLY gonna need it!

football fan wrote on Jan 16, 2008 11:37 AM:ok Pats fans, I agree you've had an incredible season thus far. What you all are overlooking is that Chargers have a score to settle. When a team loses at home the previous year to a team they are now playing in the AFC Championship game their is power greater than ourselves underneath those pads. It's called determination. The drive and the will to succeed no matter what obstacles lay (to beat or strike down with force) in its path. As a player it is there. An example of that is last weeks game against the Colts. A few of our key players went down, but others stepped up. Why, you may ask? It's because our entire team wanted this match-up. We will prove to you and to the entire country our power, CHARGER POWER.

JK wrote on Jan 16, 2008 12:46 PM:The Pats fans keep telling us to give up now because they are scared to death of the Chargers determination they saw last week. They are like a group of children singing to them selves as they pass the graveyard at night.

TXBoltFAN wrote on Jan 16, 2008 1:35 PM:WOW....even after going into INDY and beating the Champs we get no respect from NE fans....

you might want to get the stat sheet for the last half of the season. The Chargers deserve respect.

But you NE fans go ahead and ride the unbelievable play from your QB(and it is nothing short of spectacular)...but at the end of the day...when the Chargers D bends but dosnt break and allows you to only put up 24 pts.....and your old and tired D gets stretched from sideline to sideline. and allows the Charger O to put up 24 pts.....dont cry when the much disrespected charger D takes one to the house and ruins the season....Bolts 31-24....

GO Bolts

They should have there titles stripped and be barred from ever playing in the NFL again. Here come the Bolts baby. LT 200 all purpose yards, 31-28 SD!

Jaque wrote on Jan 16, 2008 2:22 PM:Go Chargers, you can do it. Tom Brady is human, he has lost games in this league. 100% for 60 minutes. I think the team that gets the lucky bounce wins. Now go do it CHARGERS !!

NWPatsFan wrote on Jan 16, 2008 3:01 PM:I think the Chargers are going to give us a run for our money - I honestly think they are coming into Foxboro to win - whether they do or not will have to be seen, but I don't think they are going to let us "rest" by any means.

This is a tough game in my house - I am a Pats fan (have been for years) and my husband is a Chargers fan, but how we are looking at it is someone in our household is going to the SB, so we are not even watching the game.... we will see on Sunday!

Jose wrote on Jan 16, 2008 3:53 PM:The Chargers have the talent and depth to win this Sunday. They just need to play smart and aggressive ball on both sides of the line of scrimmage. I believe a couple of hard, jaw wrenching QB sacks on Brady and relaentless pressure and I believe his game will drop off notably. I think the blitz rush should come up the gut and force Brady to scramble to the outside. The Shawns then shouldn't have too much of a problem wrapping Brady up in the open field. Nevertheless, Brady will manage to make plays while he's on the field. The Bolts just need to not allow the Pats' receiver any extra yards after the catch that the Jags did (are yo listening Drayton Florence?). That's what killed the Jaga and made Brady and the Pats look stellar. Too bad because if the Jags could've made adjustments to their pass D, they might've won that game. The Pats looked beatable. Also remember folks that in recent times the Chargers had spoiled both Indy's perfect season bid and New England's unblemished home streak with dominating play. To berate the Bolts abilities is unfair it's unwise. Don't be blinded by the hype you New Uglyander fans. You're team is not unbeatable. And yes they're lucky as well (luck always play some role at this level). Good luck to both teams this Sundany. Go Bolts and knock those Pats down a few notches.

GoPatsGirl wrote on Jan 16, 2008 4:19 PM:I think this is going to be a GREAT football game, and all respect to the Chargers for knocking Indy off it's high horse. The Chargers have momentum and some really impressive late and post-season play going into this. Still think my Pats will win, but not taking anything for granted!

I keep hoping some of the sports pundits would revisit this playoff season and finally put to rest the ridiculous notion that one should sit all of one's starters during "meaningless" season-end games. (I am not, of course, referring to anyone with an injury.) Look who did that: The Colts and the Cowboys. Look who didn't: The Pats and the Giants. No practice regimen prepares players for game pressure and game situations better than, duh, playing in games. I've been rooting for the Giants to win their playoff games because they gave the Pats all they could handle in a totally "meaningless" game.

I thought the Colts were total wimps to pull their stars less than a quarter into their final game (and if I were a Browns fan, I'd have gone nuts) and watching them play the Chargers, it really looked like Manning hadn't played more than a few downs in three weeks. (Which isn't to discredit the Chargers in any way for their effort or execution--they totally took advantage of everything they could with their own stars dropping like flies).

Sooooo looking forward to this game. But the Chargers are not helping my nerves.

As for the Giants, I'm afraid I have to abandon them now in favor of Farve and the Pack, who are my next favorite team!

GoPatsGirl wrote on Jan 16, 2008 5:13 PM:Thanks, you're TOO kind (and I do kind of mean that--there are some cool Pats fans out here!)

Every team has its share of fidiots (fanidiots) as far as I can tell. I'm a football fan first, then come my favorite players and teams and I try to be objective about everyone (which it seems to me the fidiots are incapable of ;-)

So this season has been a joyful thing for me to watch. Least I can do is be gracious about it!

GoPatsGirl wrote on Jan 16, 2008 5:26 PM:Oh, and by the way, sorry for my typos, a possessive apostrophe and *blush* I obviously meant FAVRE and the Pack!

Pat Riots wrote on Jan 19, 2008 10:37 AM:We'll see, but....

The Pats have "looked beatable" a lot this
year. Hasn't happened yet though, has it?

Haven't heard such cockiness from fans since Philly vs Pats in Super Bowl. Thanks for beating the Colts, but we've ALL seen the Colts, Manning in particular, get rattled in big games. Not last year, unfortunately, but it's not as if teams haven't done that to them before. So, although I was rooting for your team last week and thought you guys played great, beating the Colts is beating the Colts. Congrats, but....

By the way, the NFL isn't going to strip any team of previous championships because of an assistant with a camera in the first half of game one of the season. It's not as if stealing signals is exactly new in any sport...otherwise, why do coaches cover thier mouths on the sideline...why do ptchers and catchers talk into thier gloves? The NYJ and Belichek have a blood feud for years, and in fact, the Jets deny that thier taping of the Pats was w/o permission...naturally.

I can't stand the Yankees, but just because some of thier stars during WS years were juiced doesn't mean they get kicked out the game....

So can we please talk about football instead of this childish namecalling?

I know that Chargers were mad about the Pats doing the "Lights out" dance on the logo last year, but of course, the lights out dance exists to be done to celebrate a play that goes against the opponent...it's show boating, and when you do that kind of thing, sometimes you have it done back.

God luck, good game, have fun....
