Ever see a movie about women and weddings and conniving family members and sassy best friends and the eternal search for true love?

Yes, me too, and "27 Dresses" is another. The film offers numerous snappy moments and plenty of likable characters, but ultimately gives way to safe, overfamiliar methods.

Katherine Heigl plays Jane, a loyal pal to many, and one of the best bridesmaids you have ever seen. That role is something she truly enjoys, so why do her efforts cause Jane such pain? Duh, it's because Jane wants ---- needs ---- to be a bride herself.

That isn't likely to happen with the man she has her eye on, her boss, George (Edward Burns), a seemingly perfect-catch kind of guy whose job as leader of an environmentally sound company is to help save the planet ---- literally. Jane doesn't have the nerve to say how she feels, and things get even trickier when Jane's sassy and beautiful younger sister shows up in town and promptly charms George to the hilt.

Meanwhile, Jane is doggedly pursued by Kevin (James Marsden), a friendly but cynical journalist whose consistent diatribes against marriage can only lead us to one conclusion ---- the guy wants to get married, too. Jane is turned off by Kevin's wiseacre comments, though, so it seems all the characters will chase each other in circles for a while. So they do before truths at last become self-evident.

"27 Dresses" is a twinkly romantic comedy with stock situations and a mandate for cute. Heigl, the star of the hit "Knocked Up," has some comic chops, though she isn't allowed to use them as much playing the good girl in the thick of the chaos. It's a film likely to please those who know exactly what they want from their plucky romantic comedies. Cynics stay clear.
