Patriots end Chargers playoff run, 21-12

Patriots hold Chargers without a touchdown to advance to the Super Bowl | Sunday, January 20, 2008 3:38 PM PST

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ---- The Patriots are heading to the Super Bowl with a defense that kept the Chargers out of the end zone.

Three times the Chargers moved inside the 10-yard line and three times the unbeaten Patriots held them to a field goal, a huge factor in New England's 21-12 victory in Sunday's AFC championship game.

Flash back to eight days earlier and gauge the improvement: Jacksonville scored two touchdowns when it got inside the New England 10, but still lost 31-20 in the divisional playoff game.

This time, the Patriots intercepted two of Philip Rivers' passes, one leading to a touchdown, and erased any doubts that their linebackers were too old or their defensive backs too slow.

They are, simply, too good.

The Patriots' first big defensive stop came late in the first quarter when San Diego had a first-and-goal at the Patriots 9-yard line. Michael Turner ran for just 1 yard, Rivers followed with two interceptions and Nate Kaeding kicked a 26-yard field goal to make it 3-0.

Trailing 7-3 in the second quarter, the Chargers moved from their 30 to another first-and-goal at the 9.

Turner rushed for 1 yard. Rivers then threw toward Antonio Gates, but linebacker Tedy Bruschi dove in front of him at the last second to slap the ball away near the goal line. Rivers then hit Chris Chambers in the left flat, but cornerback Ellis Hobbs made an open-field tackle at the 5.

The Chargers settled for another field goal, this one for just 23 yards that cut the lead to 7-6.

With the Patriots ahead 14-9, Rivers led the Chargers downfield again.

With a third-and-2 at the New England 4, Turner took the handoff and started up the middle. But linebacker Junior Seau penetrated, forcing Turner to veer left, and Seau tackled him for a 2-yard loss.

No first down. No chance for a touchdown

Kaeding came out again and kicked a 24-yard field goal, another wasted opportunity and a 14-12 lead for New England.

It was 21-12 when San Diego started moving again, from its 16 to a third-and-10 at the New England 36.

This time, aggressive Rodney Harrison ran in from Rivers' right side, hit the quarterback as he was throwing and forced an incompletion.

With 9:21 left, San Diego was forced to punt and Kaeding never saw the field again.

The Chargers had let him on the field too much already.

Jose wrote on Jan 20, 2008 4:02 PM:What really hurts when you think about the Chargers' loss to the Pats today is the fact that Offense fell flat in the red zone (twice inside the 10). How do you score more times than your opponent yet still manage to lose the game? Kick FGs! 2 FGs lose to 1 TD and 2 TDs beat 4 FGs everytime!

The score doesn't indicate the closeness of the game. This loss lies squarely on the coaches. I believe Norv Turner should've benched Rivers in the first half to see where Volek would take the offense. After all, Billy V is more mobile and makes passes on the run better than Rivers...especially with Rivers' banged up wheels. I think Billy V could've punched in that 4th and 1 with QB sneak (that drive ended in a FG).

The Bolts also looked predictable with their play calling...run, run, pass, punt or pass, run, pass, INT...you know the routine. The offense was lack luster. All the ingredients were there for a victory but the offense could'nt convert and a trick play or two might've work to their benefit.

Lastly, I was just so disappointed that the Chargers offense didn't show up and left the defense to try and salvage the game for them...it was theirs for the taking but as we all know about on the field fortunes and team momentum...it slowly shifted toward NE and the rest is history!

I'm not so sure the Chargers are a better team this year as compared to last season. The season ended against the Patriots once again. It's not an easier bitter to swallow. It's just another playofff loss with no championship, and it goes down just as distasteful, if not more, than it did last season.

This is a classy team who deserve the respect and admiration of the San Diego fans and fans in other cities. This is a team that showed its strength and determination by going into Indianapolis and defeating the Colts in a way which only can be admired. A battered and bruised Chargers team came New England and gave the Patriots all they could handle. They could have won the game, but the Patriots defense played so well

A closer look wrote on Jan 20, 2008 4:43 PM:What about the face mask that kept a good Charger drive from continuing, or the "extended leg out" from the down Pat defensive player that tripped up the Chargers QB? Chargers played a great game, even with the little nit picking cheats from NE. Up until late in the 3rd, few key plays separated the teams. The Pats got off easy, the Chargers put the look of worry on their face for a lot of the game.
Now go back to NASCAR and count the interval between winner and second place. It wasn't that great of a victory for NE.

No wonder the Chargers lose when that is your team leader. Maybe he should have called Marty again and asked him how to play a big game in pain. Maybe he should have "sacrificed" his nice warm seat on the bench for some effort to earn his millions of dollars. At least he will have plenty of time in the offseason to pout, pout pout and reflect on how he folded his tent and quit on his team in a historical game.

It is quarterback Philip Rivers who performed very admirably in all 3 playoff games despite TWO injured knees. It is NOT the little pouter and selfish LT who who sat out most of the Colts game and today chose to just sit there on the heated bench all warm and cozy while Rivers gutted it out hobbling and getting thrown to the ground and sacked yet played like a MAN. THAT is leadership and not LT's selfish pouting and poem reading. Next time LT sits down next to Rivers, it should now be Rivers who gets up and walks away in disgust! Why wasn't LT walking the sidelines screaming and encouraging his team mates? How pathetic to just be sitting there all comfy while Rivers was trying to LEAD HIS team to victory. If LT was truly injured too bad to play that is one thing, but to not even be a good team mate and be pouting all by himself all wraped up and warm in the biggest game of his career and for the Chargers (who pay him a FORTUNE to PERFORM) in 13 years did not look good to me or a national television audience. I would rather have a LEADER like Rivers who talks a little fun trash but who PERFORMS LIKE A MAN WHILE INJURED at cruchtime than a selfish little pouting teapot.

BOSTON CULTURE wrote on Jan 20, 2008 8:57 PM:Boston’s culture is expressed through and distinguished by the Bostonian dialect of English, which includes many slang words and is famous for a liberal pronunciation of the “r” sound at the end of words, which usually sounds like “ah” instead (i.e. “car” becomes “cah,” “park” becomes “pahk”). These slang words can change from neighborhood to neighborhood, and suburb to suburb. The city’s culture was characterized for a long time by its Anglo-Saxon roots, but since waves of Irish immigrants found a home in Boston during the 19th and 20th centuries, Boston has been much more associated with Irish Catholic culture. South Boston, a working-class, Irish-dominant neighborhood, is a living spectacle of this tradition. The once Irish stronghold...as well as Polish and Lithuanian...is now as much a Yuppie village - owing its new if not always graciously accepted cosmopolitanism- to the facts of the beaches and sea, as well as the nearness to the downtown for easy commutes to daily business.

Within Boston’s broad culture there exist a number of sub-cultures, a credit to the city’s diversity. Boston’s neighborhoods are often ethnic or tied to a group of people or a way of life—South Boston is Irish Catholic and working class; Roxbury is highly Dominican and black; the North End still retains its Italian heritage; the South End is bohemian and gay. But other sub-cultures also represent the many interests in the Boston communities, such as sports, the arts and theater and the large student population.

Tom (not so) Terrific wrote on Jan 20, 2008 9:46 PM:SD's top three playmakers (Rivers, LT & Gates) were seriously compromised for this one. We played NE tough for three full quarters and were still in a position to stick it to NE in your own house and in lousy NE weather conditions. Three picks for Brady who better not play at that shameful level against the G-MEN in Glendale, AZ or the evil empire may fall. Why didn't SD's coaching staff pull Rivers out during all 3 opportunities in the red-zone and put in Billy V and/or even Legadu (as a receiver or the QB)? We would have surely scored on NE on all three tries!!! Not overly creative championship-level play-call Norv!!! Yet, SD won 2 playoffs games this season, our nucleus is intact with just about everyone under contract for a few years, there's plenty of $$$ for us to play with under the salary cap, and AJ will make a few things happen during the off-season!!!! Be proud of the BOLTS, Be proud of their promising future for years to come, Be proud of how far the team has come and how close they actually are to the NFL grand prize......think about it Charger faithful....we came up 1 game short of a Super-Bowl appearance!!!!!! THANKS FOR A HECK-OF-A SEASON GENTLEMEN..... WE'LL BE BACK WITH A VENGENCE.....GO BOLTS!!!! p.s. Rivers left it all on the field today....kudos to Philip for displaying so much character under highly adverse circumstances today.... horribly shameful kick-off performance by Kaeding today though as he really hurt our special teams play and overall field position throughout the entire afternoon!!!

We're proud of our Chargers, and we can say we played the season without cheating-- unlike NE. I think I'll go to the beach tomorrow in sunny warm SD.

Too bad LT had to sulk. I mean, I can understand the injury, etc., but sitting on the bench still wearing the dark visor when the sun had already set in Foxboro? Trying to hide something?
Yeah, at least the weather is still nice.

There are alot of teams that wish they made it as far as we did! Pats fans are all eastcoast fools that live out here because they could'nt hang out there. Charger fans are natives that rep where they live. Thanks Chargers and fans for a killer season. Hope brady has a sun stroke in az....

good grief wrote on Jan 21, 2008 5:16 AM:I feel bad for these Chargers and grateful that they've given us such a fun season. I hope for the sake of people who consider them role models that they hold their heads up high and take this defeat with dignity.

SD fans here wrote on Jan 21, 2008 6:55 AM:sound really immature. Gee the Chargers started off really ruff this season, pulled it together and went as far as they did. You are either a charger fan all the way or not. It sounds as tho you all want to blame LT for not playing. That wasn't his choice, it the management choice. Yell at them. People who call themselves charger fan only when the team is winning, please go away. We don't want you as fans......true San Diego Fan.

By all accounts most of New England where cheering on their Patriots, sending them the positive energy which resulted in their win. During the game I could see cars driving up and down the street. Where were these people going during the most important game of the season?? This is Charger Country, if they're not interested they should move to a non-football city - like Los Angeles. If we had more serious fans in this City and County we'd be unstoppable.

Native San Diegan wrote on Jan 21, 2008 8:31 AM:GO CHARGERS!!!!!!

Concerned-1 wrote on Jan 21, 2008 8:52 AM:There are a lot of misplaced people posting here. Small minds. The Chargers played an excellent game with what they had yesterday. I was most impressed by the fact that the defense didn't do their celebration dances after sacking Brady. Total class. Unlide Junior, although I do like him and will root for him in the Super Bowl. Good season for the Chargers, next year will be better. Go Bolts! C-1.

Jim wrote on Jan 21, 2008 8:56 AM:I guess LT is not a team player. He doesn't care about a team, he only cares about himself and his records. He knows he'll be embarassed and that's why he did not come out. If his knee was so bad and unable to play, why was he still in Chargers uniform? I'll bet he would say that the Chargers lost because he was unable to play.

As far as good looking women, maybe that is the Chargers problems, they have a team of good looking girls playing football and always cry when they don't when. That explains everything! LT and Rivers must need a lot of make up!

You may have lost the AFC championship game but you accomplished more than any Charger team in 13 years. Thanks for getting that playoff monkey off our back and get better. The Bolts are very close to being elite. Maybe a player or two on both sides of the ball. Get the players AJ and don't sit on the sideline during free agency.

Girlfan wrote on Jan 21, 2008 10:36 AM:Come on SD & NE fans...what is up with all this bashing! We're making both sides look classless. I am a die-hard Charger fan but let's face it...we were out played and out coached. We are a good team and we lost to a great team. Let's respect the fact that both teams went didn't play well yesterday. Rivers & Brady fell short, offense struggled. In the end only 1 team can win.

Native California wrote on Jan 21, 2008 10:56 AM:Yeah Baby Pats going to the SUPERBOWL!!!
Patriots are the real thing..Yeah they got caught cheating, but hey the OLD MEN pulled it off without the spying. Everyone can say they lost because of one or another, but the true fact is that the OLD MEN still have it in them. Yeah the young ones can learn a few from them. All in all Chargers played their heart out and for you wannabe fans we will see you next year.
How about the San Diego community take this time off and realize how unsupportive you can be when the chips are down. I would hate to represent San Diego community with fans like you.
I was never a San Diego fan just a player fan. The reason is because being around the wannabe's wasn't worth my time and effort.
So stop crying after all that's what happens when you do a lot of trash talking. Wow were is all the media at funny how their not covering yesterdays game, but yet the media was blowing it up how Chargers will come out of it as a winner. Maybe the media should take a lesson from the Patriots and be humble.

Old Timer wrote on Jan 21, 2008 12:34 PM:I've followed the Chargers since the 60's when they played at San Diego Stadium. I've always considered the organization to be a business venture. What's the big deal if they fall short of making it to the Super Bowl? The organization will continue to thrive. People take the game too seriously and personally. Come to think of it, would you be demoralized if Bank of America didn't meet their quarterly earnings projection?
Let's build a new Charger stadium and let the San Diego economy prosper.

Give it a rest! The game is over! wrote on Jan 21, 2008 1:34 PM:A little banter is ok, when we are playing and still competing. A little needling is ok as well, as long as the game is still going. All in fun and good spirited. Yesterday, the Pats won and the Chargers didn't. Pat's Fans don't need to say anything more! The Charger's Fan don't need to says anything as well! Talk skill, talk errors, and maybe choice of plays, but that's all. Good game was had by all either way! I was of course pleased with the performance, that the Chargers brought to the table. I enjoyed watching the game. As a Pats fan I would have been disapointed if we had lost! Just like the Boltz are now! Makes sence! But taking it any farther than that, is obnoxious! Now is the time for both teams and fans to move to next item on the agenda! Real Football fans should look toward the Super Bowl as a history making possiblity! Maybe an 19-0 season. An event that will be represent not only the Pats, but the difference between conferences! Go AFC!!! I like most football enthusiast appreciate the Boltz effort and thier ability to play with several injuried players and still bring a decent game! That is the heart of competition and raw football! But when the adrenaline wears off, lets shake hands and promise to meet each other on the field again next year as true respected competitors!

The Chargers didn't measure up, this year. This game is skill, maturity and little bit of luck! The Chargers are still building. Just like the days of glory for Cowboys, Raider under Madden, and who can forget the 72 Dolphins! It comes with time, and if all things are equal; the only thing that is adjustable is the personal sacrifice of the individual players at that moment! Just look at the Giants and Packers game, yesterday! Who would have thought Eli would be going to the Super Bowl! Not me! I would have bet on Favre!

Hence the phrase, " Any given Sunday!" So my hats off to Chargers and the Boltz fans! Now it's off to AZ to take on the Giants! I suggest to the Pats, Do not take them lightly and play like they you want to win! For the AFC and the New England Patriots, good luck at your potential history making game! Signed a Patriots Fan who did transplant to San Diego for the sun and quality of life! New England is my birth place, but America is my home! See ya next year Chargers!

Diehard Pat's Fan!

Yea we fell short, but hey when everyone is 100% i think its a different story. Dont get me wrong Pats fans, but honestly we made 4 trips to the red zone, yea we only got filed goals, but look at the possibility of the outcome if we were able to score at will. Might not have had the best play calling on offence, but I honestly think the Chargers Defence was awesome. I havent see Tom Brady out of his game like that in a lonf time. LT in my book you are still the Man and great leader of this SD team. I would like to thank all the Chargers for making my Sundays this season fun and exciting. Rivers, LT, Gates get better soon, because we have a Superbowl to win for the 2008-2009 season. Now on to the Band wagoners. Obviously you have never played sports. LT's injury might be worse, than we all think. Trust me, coming from a family of history with bad knees, you know if you are good to go on the first play. Norv might have made the call to have him sit to save him for a possible Superbowl and have faith in his two back up running backs. Things didnt quite go as planned but hey, all we can do is accept it and move on. Pat's Fans, the only reason why you are talking so much is because you know that the Chargers beat you. May not be the case on the scoreboard, but hey im can't wait to see 18 -1 come in 2 weeks. Im not going to say the famous phrase for San Diego "We'll get em next year" but hey just wait and see. Untill then I will be flying my Chargers flags high, and hopefully the Pads wont suck as bad. Thanks for a great year!

BoltDan wrote on Jan 22, 2008 8:55 AM:Ghessh!!! do you chowderheads have nothing else to do but roust the losing teams blog site??? you guys are really bored. The team played with gusto... Rivers is the leader of this team. LT???? he was hurt... I understand that but not helping Turner/Sproles with finding holes or scheming plays??? I don't get it. I am not saying get rid of him but c'mon.

Now let's get to what we need to finish... Norv??? C'mon we all knew he wasn't the coach for us but AJ had to fire Marty... I don't even want to start with the lackluster play calling that is Norval... bad!!! I have to say that Jammer played great... ewww that hurt to say but he looked great. Florence has to go and take the safeties with you. (funny Rodney is too old)

Back to LB's and the run stoppers... ahhh! Ouch... missing that sure tackle of Donnie Edwards ...ewww I know all those AJ lovers out there don't want to hear it but to improve this team and to get over the hump you need to face reality... bad tackling the whole game. (JR too old & Donnie not so good, really????)

O-line... I have said for a while they are almost there but need one more big tank up there to protect the QB... looks like the draft needs are many... Hope AJ is up to the challenge. Or maybe he can fire the coach again and upset the continuity again...
