FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Land Conservancy is gearing up for its annual "Tails and Trails Dog Walk: Fallbrook's Original Dog Walk" taking place March 15 at Los Jilgueros Preserve on South Mission Road.

The preserve is south of the village across from Fallbrook Airpark and north of Fallbrook High School. Follow the signs to the event. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. The walk benefits the Fallbrook Land Conservancy and Critter Crossings dog rescue work.

Pledge levels and prizes (while supplies last) include:

  • Beagle level: $30, doggie gift bag, T-shirt and one drawing ticket.

  • Dalmatian level: $75, doggie gift bag, T-shirt, framed photo with owner and pet and three drawing tickets.

  • Great Dane level: $150, supply of Advantage or Frontline, doggie gift bag, framed photo of owner and pet, T-shirt and five drawing tickets.

    There also will be several canine contests including: ugliest cute dog, best trick, smallest dog, biggest dog, smallest female senior dog, handsomest male senior dog and owner-dog look-alike. Entry for canine contests is $3 per event. For information, call (760) 519-2302.

    Date changes for Bonsall sundowner

    BONSALL -- The Bonsall Chamber of Commerce has rescheduled its February sundowner for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Cask 'n' Cleaver restaurant, 3757 S. Mission Road. The chamber usually has its sudowners on the second Thursday of the month, but is making the change for February because of Valentine's Day. Information: (760) 630-1933.

    Woman's club plans mah jongg tournament

    FALLBROOK -- A weekend getaway at a private cabin at Big Bear Lake is the grand prize for the lucky winner of a raffle at the upcoming mah jongg tournament presented by the Fallbrook Woman's Club. The English Tudor four-bedroom cabin boasts an indoor Jacuzzi, pool table and other amenities, and will be available to the grand prize winner any weekend the owners are not in attendance.

    The tournament will take place Feb. 1 at the Fallbrook Woman's Club, 238 W. Mission Road. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and play will begin at 1. A light lunch with snacks and beverages will be served before play begins.

    Tables will be for groups of four with one set of mah jongg needed for each group. Donations are $10 for each player. Proceeds benefit the club's scholarship fund.     Fitness classes for children offered

    FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Community Center is adding new dance and fitness classes to its spring schedule, offering youths everything from creative movement to a cardio workout.

    The classes, taught by Webby's Dance Company, are targeted at specific age groups and skill levels, and include the following:

  • Creative movement for children ages 2 and 3, teaching a combination of ballet, tumbling and creative flow.

  • Tap and ballet class for children ages 3 to 5, where kids learn a variety of tap and ballet movements.

  • Tumbling class for children ages 2 and 3 introduces basic tumbling and balancing skills, obstacle courses and choreographed routines using a variety of gymnastic stations such as a mini-trampoline, balance beam and tumbling mat.

  • Fitness class for children ages 3 through 9 offers a 60-minute cardio workout on stationary bikes and treadmills designed for children. The class also includes interactive lessons about eating right and staying active and ends with a healthy snack of fresh fruits or vegetables.

    Senior center plans Las Vegas, Grand Canyon trip

    FALLBROOK -- The Fallbrook Senior Center is taking reservations for a five-day, four-night trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon from May 5 through 9. Cost is $379 per person, triple occupancy, two double beds; $399 per person, double occupancy; and $579 for single. Trip Protection Plan insurance is available.

    The trip includes motorcoach transportation, four nights lodging including two consecutive nights in a Las Vegas Casino Hotel, two breakfasts, two dinners, gaming and sight-seeing on the Las Vegas Strip, a free day to shop, explore and discover Las Vegas, a visit to Laughlin, Nev., and view of the Colorado River, two nights at a Flagstaff, Ariz., hotel and a visit to Grand Canyon National Park, including an IMAX Grand Canyon movie.

    Wine, chocolate and horticulture at mission

    OCEANSIDE -- Mission San Luis Rey will host a wine and chocolate tasting event along with a horticultural tour of the mission on Jan. 24 at 4050 Mission Ave. The tour will be held at 2 p.m. followed by the tasting from 4 to 5 p.m. The tour includes areas not generally accessible to the public.     StandUp For Kids seeks donations

    OCEANSIDE -- StandUp For Kids will hold a donation drop-off from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Oceanside Pier Upper Level Parking Lot. Items needed include teen clothing, sleeping bags, backpacks, food pack items and new men's boxer shorts and socks.

    StandUp For Kids is a national foundation supporting at-risk and homeless youth that is headquartered in San Diego, with a chapter in Oceanside. It is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization that relies on volunteers and donations.     Home meal delivery for seniors

    CARLSBAD -- The city of Carlsbad Senior Center has a state-funded program that provides nutritious hot meals for homebound seniors who live in Carlsbad, ages 60 years and older, and are unable to prepare their own meals.     Concert to feature sacred sounds

    Water supply issues topic of meeting

    CARLSBAD -- The North Coast League of Women Voters will present a program to discuss vital water supply issues for San Diego County at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Carlsbad by the Sea Community Room, 2855 Carlsbad Blvd.

    Two phases of the water shortage issue will be presented: Grace Chann from the Metropolitan Water District will speak on the water supply and its economics for California, including the Delta region, the Colorado River source and any anticipated impacts of climate warming.

    Opera singers invited to compete

    Ghanaian musicians to perform April 13

Lead singer and drummer Akayaa Atule and Bolga Zohdoomah share their own flavor of Ghanaian “Highlife” music, a fusion of traditional African drums with Western instrumentation.     'Life Is a Journey' workshops to begin

    ESCONDIDO -- The Joslyn Senior Center will team up with the San Diego State University Interwork Institute to present a new educational series called "Life Is a Journey -- Pack the Car With the Right Stuff!"

    Consisting of four two-hour lecture and discussion seminars, participants can explore personal change and be introduced to some new tools and techniques that can help manage the life journey.

    The presenters will be Dr. Stephen Barnes and Patrick H. Davis, who are co-founders of the Institute for Applied Critical Thinking. Sessions include the following:

    Former NCT sports columnist to speak

    Hospice volunteer training on tap

    ESCONDIDO -- The Elizabeth Hospice is seeking caring people to participate in the Winter Volunteer Training and Community Education class that will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 2, 9 and 16 at the hospice administrative office, 150 W. Crest St.

    Professional hospice staff teach the free class, addressing issues such as hospice care, spiritual concerns, working with nonverbal patients, cultural diversity and active listening. Graduates of this class will serve their neighbors and faith communities in a variety of ways -- as volunteers in hospice, pastoral care, nursing facilities, social service agencies and children's support programs.

    Miss/Teen Escondido contestants sought

    ESCONDIDO -- The Miss Escondido and Miss Teen Escondido Pageant is accepting applications for the 2008 pageant from young women between the ages of 13 and 26 living or attending school in Escondido.

    The pageant is based on sportswear and evening gown competitions and personal interview skills. There is no swimsuit competition or talent portion. Pageant staff members will train each contestant in all areas of competition; no experience is needed.

    Raptor-watching tours under way

    RAMONA -- The Wildlife Research Institute in Ramona is holding hawk-watching events every Saturday through Feb 23.

    The institute, a nonprofit conservation group headquartered in the Ramona grasslands, will host "Hawkwatch" events from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday, beginning at the group's base on Highland Valley Road near the intersection of Rangeland and Highland roads.

    Participants in the guided walking tours will be able to view the institute's resident raptors and watch for migrating eagles and hawks. Biologists will be on hand to talk about raptors and the ecosystem of the grasslands. Bring binoculars or use scopes provided by the biologists.

    Learn about Internet resources

    RANCHO PENASQUITOS -- A free "Internet Explorations" workshop will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Rancho Penasquitos Branch Library, 13330 Salmon River Road. The Escondido OASIS workshop will be a review of Internet resources, and is fully underwritten by the Friends of the Rancho Penasquitos Library. Registration is encouraged.     Rincon Band makes donations

    NORTH COUNTY -- The Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians celebrated the end of 2007 with a final round of charitable contributions including $10,000 in gift certificates for children and youths of the La Jolla and Mesa Grande Tribes, distributed at a Christmas party hosted by the Rincon Band in conjunction with the Rez Riders, a motorcycle club.

    "Both the La Jolla and Mesa Grande reservations severely suffered from the Poomacha fire, and do not have the government funds and resources to bounce back as quickly as tribes with casinos. Sharing is not just part of our tradition, it is our responsibility to our tribal community," said DeLisle Calac, chairman of the Rincon contributions committee.
