Tomlinson finds he must defend self

SAN DIEGO -- The body-length parka and shaded helmet visor made it impossible to read LaDainian Tomlinson's body language or facial expressions as he watched the AFC Championship Game from the Chargers' sideline.

That didn't stop many from trying. Fans and analysts alike tried to draw conclusions about why someone removed from the Chargers' injury report was unable to play after just two series. Word from the press box and on the CBS telecast was that Tomlinson's knee was healthy enough to return.

If quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates were able to play through pain, the rationale went, then why wasn't Tomlinson toughing it out? While it was under the false pretense that he could've returned, Tomlinson's heart was called into question.

That's something that bothered the Chargers' leader to no end. On Monday afternoon, Tomlinson vigorously defended his honor.

"After all the injuries I've played through for this team, I can't believe that all of a sudden I'm not tough," said Tomlinson, who added he wouldn't play in the Feb. 10 Pro Bowl in Hawaii. "Do you think I wanted to sit on the sideline during the championship game? Come on man. That's ridiculous."

Those that know Tomlinson agreed with that assertion.

"L.T. is a competitor and if there was any way he could've been out there with us, he would have been," left tackle Marcus McNeill said. "For anybody to criticize him is disappointing to hear."

He was harshly criticized by NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders, who, like many others, was under the assumption that Tomlinson was close to 100 percent after the Chargers reported he sustained a hyperextended knee a week earlier then removed him from the injury report on Friday.

Sanders criticized Tomlinson for not re-entering such an important game, saying that he would need to have surgery on the knee in order to "get a free pass on this one." Tomlinson will not require surgery for what was actually a sprained medial collateral ligament, something he said he could not have played through.

"As a running back, it's way harder to play with an injury like that," Tomlinson said. "Running, banging against people, trying to cut, it's much harder to do with a knee problem. At any other position, you might have a chance. But as a running back, I don't know anyone who can do it."

Tomlinson may have given fans false hope after saying earlier in the week that the knee was healing fast and that he would be able to play against the Patriots.

All that talk may also have been Tomlinson fooling himself into thinking everything was OK.

"I felt fine in warmups, but I still didn't have that explosiveness," Tomlinson said. "I thought to myself, even without the explosiveness, maybe I can tough it out. Getting hit on the first play, that changed everything. It started to hurt again. It brought back the same pain. That's when I knew the knee wasn't going to cooperate."

There was nothing Tomlinson or the trainers could've done to get him back in the game, coach Norv Turner said. That forced Tomlinson into his own private hell, watching his team struggle to score touchdowns without him.

"The thing that was so hard was that I've played in games that were meaningless when I was banged up, yet I couldn't go in such an important one," Tomlinson said. "For me to get to this point, to reach the AFC Championship Game and not be able to play, was incredibly difficult. I've fought through a lot of stuff, but this was something that I couldn't work through. It was a horrible feeling to be in that situation."

Et cetera

LaDainian Tomlinson was voted the team MVP and offensive player of the year by his teammates. CB Antonio Cromartie (defense), Kassim Osgood (special teams), Kris Dielman (lineman), Philip Rivers (inspirational) and Carlos Polk (inspirational) were also honored by their teammates.

While I'm proud of the way the Chargers played this season, I'd be just as happy seeing LT get traded this off-season. We need football players, not self-interested guys who put extending the length of their careers ahead of getting a championship victory. Turner runs harder anyways, LT ducks hits and turns to the sidelines rather than fight for a few extra yards.

1. Tomlinson sitting on the bench, with his face covered for no reason. All suggled up, while his fellow team amates were toughing it out! Many playing injured and needing surgery, but playing anyway!

2. That stupid commercial where Tomlinson is playing street ball with his sissiy friends and his MOMMIE calls out "LaDainian" time to come home for dinner! What a mommy;s boy for sure! THAT IS WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE!

We KNOW what we saw! We don't care what you have done in the past Tomlinson. Play football and suck it up! I'd take a hundred mediocre players with heart, then rellay talent ..., who can;t pack it! Incredulous wrote on Jan 22, 2008 8:23 AM:For NEON DEION Sanders to be attacking Tomlinson for alleged lack of toughness and dedication to is like having the hen calling the rooster chicken. Sanders is still Sanders, now using his commentator position to seek his own glory by dissing a Hall of Fame player. Sure, it's disappointing that
Tomlinson couldn't play. And it's disappointing that the Chargers couldn't step it up and win without him, like they did in Indy the previous week. But, from where I sit, there's more of team spirit in a star taking himself out of the game, rather than insisting on playing and pretending that he can be effective. One only has to think back to Super Bowl XXXIX, when T.O., only partially recovered from a severe ankle injury, made 10 inconsequential catches, with the Pats basically ignoring him until he caught the ball, knowing that he had no ability to outrun or evade the defenders.

How many of you were miserable after the loss and didn't do things you normally would want to do or simply watched a great NYG/GB game with half interest? Just move on. Everyone here has had a similar moment is one way or another where they failed to show the right level of team spirit or sulked more than they should have. Guess what - he's just as human as the rest of us. This is such a non-issue. Get some perspective.

And comments about saving yourself for the future....remember the superbowl the Patriots played against the Panthers. Rodney Harrison BROKE HIS ARM on a play....AND MADE A TACKLE ON THE NEXT PLAY!!!! that is heart.

LT may think he has a long career to get back to that point, but what about his teammates who may never get there, who put it all on the line every week to get to that point. Who may retire, be cut, injured, traded to the Jets, or any other situation that would make them never sniff a superbowl again. A huge disservice to them LT

That is a sign of a true fair weather fan. When LT is helping you win, you're all happy to brag about having the best player and highest character guy in the NFL on your team. But if they lose, then you throw him and the rest of the team to the wolves. Come on, be a true fan and support your team. Honest criticism is one thing, but to question LT's character over assumptions made by Deon Sanders is ludicrous.

Most of you would be on the DL after one practice let alone an NFL game. How easily you turn, I hope that no one is dependent on you, Jaque, because at the 1st bump in the road you bail out. I'm sure if LT could play that he would. He definitely would not have preferred to stay on the side line and watch his team struggle scoring touchdowns. It's easy for you all to say, tough it out and play when you are not the one feeling the pain. How would you know how bad the pain is? You are not the one with the injuries. He would have to run with that knee not just stand around and take a few steps like Rivers with his position. It's better to have LT healthy for next year. At the end of the baseball season, Trevor Hoffman was about to strike out Tony Gwinn Junior and bring the Padres into the playoffs. Instead, Junior hit the ball out of reach into the outfield and the Padres lost that game and other games which would have brought them to the playoffs and possibly lead to a match with that other Boston team. Do they really believe the stuff they say or are they trying to anger fans and draw more people to their shows?

Do internet writers believe what they say or are they just saying stuff to generate website traffic.

This isn't about LT. LT's heart isn't on trial, the media's soul is. The media's integrity is.

Where is the media now in regards to the stripping of the Patriot draft pick? It was pretty much a one week story. No media person wants to anger the NFL. No one wants to tick off the golden goose.

So we now have a SB with a QB on one team that refused to play for the team that drafted him and we have another team that was stripped of a draft pick.

Those two stories are far more important than LT, but you won't hear much about them. No one wants to make the NFL angry. You won't like it if the NFL is angry.

Goodell, you should be proud of the two SB participants you have this year. You will definitely get the ratings, but at what price? The story isn't the Patriots unbeaten streak. The story is the media that rolled over and basically let this story go away.

Especially the type of runner LT is, a weak knee makes him worthless except as a decoy. No cutting, no explosiveness. Hell, it's not track and field, it's not dropping back in the pocket and it's not running straight fly patterns. Without the ability to stop on a dime, change direction and burst through holes, he'd be worthless. I think he realized that. Turner was a better option. I actually can't believe that people here are questioning his dedication. He carried this friggin' team into the playoffs and every arm-chair QB in SD is taking their disappointment out on him. Give it a rest and look to next year. Yeah, I like to think of what could have been, but what's done is done. I'm glad I don't live in SD anymore. You fans are so damn fickle. "This is a guy that has played with a separated shoulder, a guy that has played eight weeks with a strained groin, a guy that has played with bruised ribs," Neal said. "I think it was the most selfless thing he could do. People ask, 'What do you mean selfless?'

"Well, a selfish person would have tried to play in the game, even though he knew he was ineffective. A selfless person would say, 'Michael Turner and Darren Sproles give us the opportunity to win.'"

Tomlinson came out for the first series, but he didn’t return after a third-down screen pass ended with a 1-yard gain when aging inside linebacker Tedy Bruschi forced Tomlinson out of bounds.

"He said he ran a screen and Teddy Bruschi ran him down," Neal said. "Everybody knows Teddy Bruschi can’t run with LT. When that happened, the guy made a decision for the team."

Neal said Tomlinson tried to stay warm and get ready before he took a seat on the bench. He said he watched him at halftime as he put his head in his hands at his locker.

"He said, 'Lo, why this time? Why now?'" Neal said. "He was a like a prize fighter who trained for the biggest fight of his career and then got hurt and couldn’t fight."

Had Rivers done the same thing and let Volek play, the Chargers could have won that game.

With today's technology...high speed internet, etc., it's great to see all the vidoes, read newspaper articles, to very easily follow the team. However on the flip side, now I get to read all these posts. There are a bunch of you that are instant gratification seeking idiots pure and simple. If nothing else, the fact that half of you don't even know how to spell correctly shows your intelligence. Do you really abandon LT just like that after all he's done for San Diego and the Chargers? Do you forget that easily? You're pathetic.

Dan wrote on Jan 22, 2008 8:30 PM: Everyone needs to shut there trap. Why would everyone think the guy who has carried this team on there back for 6 years wouldn't play if he could. L.T. is not a whiner. I'm tired of reading people juding someone who has done nothing but be a leader in the comunity as well as on the field. L.T. has more class than anyone who has something bad to say about him. He didn't take his helmet off because he was ashamed of himself not being able to play. He is the one most dissapointed by not being able to play. Everyone wants to blame someone for this loss, but we did lose, and not because of L.T. Have some class, and think more about your comment before you write it.Without L.T. were not playing the patriots in January. Keep being hard on him he might leave, and who would blame him for that. All who has something bad to say is just a wanna be Charger fan in the first place, and are just mad because you dropped your last favorite team to root us on, and because we didn't win u take a shot at one of the games best. Oh by the way Micael Turner Burner did a great job, and the score would of been the same most likely, anyhow. You are whiners get over it we lost!!!!!!!!!!!

mp wrote on Jan 22, 2008 9:26 PM:what a bunch of idiots! Are you serious, doubting LT's toughness! If he had tried to play on at 50% and hurt the team, then you all would be calling him selfish. Do you have a clue about a sprained MCL? Could Philip Rivers play QB with a sprained ligament in his right elbow? No way! Wait, you guys are right! Let's trade LT for a cheerleader. Good luck in the red zone. Instead of "wait till next year", we can yell "wait till next decade". Hey, maybe the Chargers will move to a city where real football fans know what they're talking about. Give New England credit, they are the best team in football. We were outcoached, New England made better adjustments at halftime. I'm glad A.J. Smith is the GM instead of some of the knuckleheads here who don't have a clue about what they are talking about. They must be Raider fans.

Ross wrote on Jan 22, 2008 11:06 PM:LaDainian Tomlinson has proven over the years that he is the ultimate warrior and ultimate teammate. Hats off to LT for trying to play running back on a strained MCL after one week of rest. Hats off to LT for not being selfish and trying to be the hero at the expense of the team, and insist that he play even though he realizes he has no burst or power. Hats off to LT for being smart enough to shut it down and allow a healthy Turner and Sproles to do their thing and earn their paycheck! LT continues to be the greatest Charger in history.

rx619 wrote on Jan 23, 2008 2:10 AM:Wow, so many wanna be bandwagon charger fans. You guys are finally showing your true colors. All you wanna be charger fans complain about spending all this money for tickets, LT has not guts, LT not cheering for his team, and so forth. LT has been there for the chargers through the BAD times and now the good times (winning AFC West Champion 3 out of 4 years). You think we could have won all these recent AFC West titles without him,..guess again. He's the one who held a gut check team meeting when chargers was 5-5 during this season. Apparently you so called charger fans are the ones whose being selfish. I would rather see a healthy Turner and Sproles play than an injured LT. How's this for a headline for all you selfish wanna be charger fans: "LT Reinjures and ruptures knee during AFC Championship game...Doubtful to RETURN NEXT SEASON" Think about it. Turner is out next season due to free agency and Darren Sproles can't carry this team like LT can. Is this what you selfish so called charger fans want? I would rather see LT play next year and give us another chance at a Superbowl run along with all our talented charger players (Rivers, Gates and so forth) than risk season or career ending injury. Remember, our team is loaded with talent and we will have another shot into the playoffs next year and so forth. LT get better soon and I'm looking forward to seeing our charger team this upcoming 2008 season and into the playoffs!

Boltbackersince65 wrote on Jan 23, 2008 12:01 PM:Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion about the Chargers coaches and players. I admire that LT stepped aside for the good of the team unlike Rivers (despite his gutsy play) who really wasn't playing as well as he could've.

LT deferred to Turner and Sproles. I didn't see Rivers stepping down to let Billy V do his thing (at 100%!) Afterall, the Chargers are a team, right? A team isn't just few players it's a full squad.

Sam said best about selflessness vs selfishness. LT showed selflessness. Rivers was selfish. How can you expect to help your team win when you're at 60-75% moblility and not able to pass effectively (on target) or move out of the pocket when under pressure? To hell with guts! I believe every starting NFL player has guts (afterall it's a violent sport with pain an expected outcome!).

As much as it is unfair to berate LT's motivation (is it really that critical to know why he didn't cheer on the team?), it's unfair to attack each other about our views (expression of our views is a guaranteed right in this country).

If LT had played the duration of the Pats game and did irreparable, career ending (and life-long permanent) damage to his knee and say we still lost the game what would we be saying then? and who would we be blaming for his misfortunes or the teams? It's LT's health and livlihood at stake here plus he is young and it shows.

Also, don't forget that many Chargers players had said that Norv, unlike Marty, is not a rah rah kind of coach and that Norv leaves it up the the players to get motivated and prepared. So maybe what we're seeing is the manifestation of the Norv Turner coached Chargers dynamic??

Good luck LT and heal quickly and show the doubters when your on the field your value to the Bolts organization and community. As for AG, PR, and the rest of the banged up Chargers get well and best of luck next season. Go Bolts..

Like LT said, Turner is better at 100% than he is at 50%. LT is the ultimate team player...he has played in many a meaningless game with injuries. And Dion Sanders, what a joke! He just said of his good buddy Terrell Owens, that he didn't want to see him go if he was only 70 or 80%...what a hypocrit!

I could only think of maybe 5 of the 32 NFL teams, So if you think your team has a better RB come with it, and we'll look at the history of each back....

If you don't know this by now (which is a truly sad thing to think about), TV can portray a completely different picture of someone than is actually the truth. Everyone heard that LT was able to go back into the game, absolutely believed it (because TV is never wrong, right?), and assumed that he was sulking on the sideline. I'm sorry, was the camera on LT the entire game? Hmmmmm, maybe the fact that LT's teammates voted him the offensive player of the year and have never had ANYTHING bad to say about LT means something. I guess not, because all these people who so quickly attack LT's character, his religious persuasions, his heart, etc. without having the slightest idea of what kind of man he is personally. I'm pretty sure that the people who know him personally probably have a better idea of what kind of guy he is more than some fans that came out of the woodwork when the Chargers won their first playoff game this year. I just feel bad as a truly diehard Chargers fan that people are attacking the player who, more than any other player on this team, has meant more to this team's turnaround in recent years than anyone else on the roster. Bandwagoners, go back to the hole you crawled out of. Meanwhile, I'll be eagerly anticipating the start of the next season, when the Chargers have their best chance of winning a championship for true Chargers fans that support the team and players like LT. ...
