Rivers plays after knee surgery

QB faced Pats with torn ACL six days after surgery | ∞
SAN DIEGO -- There was a certain mystique surrounding Philip Rivers' right knee. It was no secret that the Chargers quarterback spent the last nine days walking around with a damaged joint, but the true extent of his injury was shrouded in secrecy.
After a loss to New England officially ended the Chargers' season, Rivers no longer had cause to be coy. What Rivers revealed about his right knee on Monday afternoon, however, was both candid and worse than many imagined.
In addition to the sprained medial collateral ligament the team had publicly revealed, Rivers also suffered a completely torn anterior cruciate ligament during the Chargers' playoff victory over the Indianapolis Colts nine days ago.
Rivers also said that, in order to be ready for Sunday's game against the Patriots, he had arthroscopic surgery a day after the game in Indianapolis to remove some cartilage from his knee.
Now, he will require more invasive surgery.
"If I didn't do that Monday, I had no chance to play on Sunday," Rivers said. "It gave me the ability to get that range of motion and get rid of that catching feeling."
That catching feeling was uncomfortable and made it difficult to move around at all. The procedure helped Rivers crack the starting lineup against New England and garnered tremendous respect from the Chargers' coaching staff.
"I've never been around that kind of mental toughness," Chargers head coach Norv Turner said. "I've never been around an attitude like that. Then to go out and play like he did, that's a performance for the books. I think it said a lot about him as a person."
While Rivers had a ready-made excuse for why he made mistakes, he refused to use it on Monday.
"(The pain) wasn't too bad, to be honest with you," Rivers said. "It's more of an uncomfortable feeling than anything. It wasn't great, but it wasn't too bad. I think that had no negative impact on my play."
Now that the season is over, Rivers will focus on a much more significant knee surgery to repair his ACL. While an exact date hasn't been set, Rivers will wait until after the birth of his child -- which should happen in the next few weeks -- to have the procedure done. The rehabilitation will be lengthy and might take as long as six months.
"I like to think of myself as a fast healer," Rivers said. "I'm sure I'll be good to go for the season. As far as what I can do in the offseason, we'll have to see how that goes."
Rivers' surgery will be similar, although not as extensive as the procedure Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer went through after injuring his knee in the 2005 playoffs. Palmer returned the following season and had a career year, throwing for 4,035 yards and 28 touchdowns. Rivers hopes to have a similar return and continue this run of Chargers success.
"I'm not looking forward to the rehab necessarily," Rivers said. "You look back at the guys who have gone through the same thing, Carson Palmer being the most recent. He came back even better. I don't have any doubt that I'll be good to go when the season rolls around."

BoltDan wrote on Jan 22, 2008 8:22 AM:OUCH!!! all the haters of Rivers will need to look at themselves now... this guy has guts. He played with all he had in this game and if not for NORVAL and his bland play calling things would have been different. C'mon Norv, down two scores and you punt????
Gnarly Charlie wrote on Jan 22, 2008 8:26 AM:A running back on a bad knee is totally ineffective. Get a clue. Especially when you have Michael Turner and Darren Sproles. Why run out a guy on one leg? People questioning Tomlinson's heart are what's pathetic. He carries the ball over 300 times a year season after season, and he finally gets injured at a horrible time. He would've played if he could've.
Lets go Chargers! wrote on Jan 22, 2008 8:40 AM:Get better Phil! You played like a warrior! You and the rest of the team! All except that girl, Tomlinson! What is up with that guy! All talk, he is! Anyway, get better! Look forward to seeing all the real warriors next year! They need to let Tomlinson go!

james wrote on Jan 22, 2008 9:59 AM:Rivers and Gates you guys played like champions. For those that are bashing LT, you sure make SD fans look bad. LT has carried this team year in and year out. You know he wanted to play and for you to say that, you are pathetic to the lowest point.
Charger Fan forever wrote on Jan 22, 2008 11:42 AM:L.T. for President.......my 8 year old boy was in tears and we talked about the pain in our bellies over the loss. But we could never fathom the pain in L.T.'s while he had to watch from the sidelines. He is our Hero....
NCT censorship wrote on Jan 22, 2008 12:00 PM:really my post regarding Rivers was no big deal but because you only want positive you don't post --very sad.

Hey James! wrote on Jan 22, 2008 1:02 PM:No one is bashing LT! He sulks too much! End of story! Step up and be the entertainer we pay you to be! Show me why we have you! It isn't very inspiring watching this so-called hero cry and sulk oon the sidelines! Move on and grow up! That is what is so pathetic! We have grown a nation of weak little cry babies from the baby boomers of America, who cry when they don't get their way! LT could be the Poster Child for that charge! Get on board with real football and or get out! That's all we are saying. Show us next year we weren't satidfied with our performance at this years AFC! Which comes too few in between to be wasting his time sulking! That is why we are upset!
Gnarly Charlie wrote on Jan 22, 2008 1:38 PM:LT has rushed for 3300 yards and 43 TD's the past two seasons! Is that not entertaining enough for you ...? He was HURT! Get over it. You can't play the running back position with one leg.
Hey Gnarly Charlie wrote on Jan 22, 2008 1:55 PM:Ok I'll give you that! Then why does he sit on the bench the whole game! Why doesn't he cheer on the rest of the team! I'll tell you why, because it is always about LT! He is bad luck for the team! get on borad a winning team attitude! He sure can cry and look like total fool on the bench hiding his face with one leg! So you get over it! He nees to get rid of his attitude! Who elected you King of all Charger Fans? Like you even matter! Go Chargers! LT Step it up!

Jimbo wrote on Jan 22, 2008 4:04 PM:It was a bad idea to play Rivers. He must be really worried about his job. A non-mobile QB does not help the Chargers, especially when the Pats knew he couldn't run due to injury. Playing Volek would have loosened up the Pats defense. It would have made the difference in the game. A few more yards on some key plays and we would be in the Super Bowl. Even Volek could have managed to get higher than Rivers' 46 QB rating.
Matt wrote on Jan 23, 2008 6:54 AM:Rivers should get more respect nation wide than Manning, Palmer, Brady, and Romo but doesn't
Charger Fan wrote on Jan 23, 2008 11:19 AM:Congratulations Rivers. I was extremely impressed with your playing on Sunday and didn't know you had surgery prior to that. Now if you can improve the immature way you handle comments to fans and other players - you will win me over and get the respect like Manning, Palmer, Brady and Romo. Best of luck next season.
Jose wrote on Jan 23, 2008 3:38 PM:Just something to think about egarding guts and playing while injured...remember Stan Humphries? (QB of the 1994 Coach Bobby Ross led, Super Bowl Charger team for those who don't know about him)
He played hurt and gave a gutsy effort everytime and in fact played with a concussion. He was gutsy and played hurt until he his football career was prematurely finished with a severe concussion.
After losing Humphries, the Bolts began a decade long slide from grace coupled with unfortunate QB searches (Ryan Leaf). Those were some dark times, folks.
Maybe Stan Humphries might've been able to play longer if he'd have stayed on the side lines longer and healed up 100%. Well, didn't happend and the rest is history.
In my opinion, Humphries excelled at the no huddle offense and quick snap. The Bolts kept defenses of balance back then. We could've use a QB like him (or Air Coryell's Dan Fouts's quick drop back adn passing release vs the Pats. Just a thought.
Here's to a quick and complete recovery, Phillip Rivers.
eagles fan wrote on Jan 29, 2008 5:41 PM:the chargers suck they got what they deserved. philip river is a joke they juiced up his knee up before the game fools. he was playing without pain. as for lt he was only worried about not hurting his leg even more. he could care less about the game he only cares about playing in the future for the big pay day. lt only cares about the money when are you fools going to realize this.
