SAN DIEGO ---- A record 18.3 million airline passengers flew in and out of Lindbergh Field last year, representing a 5 percent increase over the year before, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority reported Thursday.
In 2006, the passenger total reached 17.5 million, the authority said.
Last year marked the fourth in a row when records were set for Lindbergh, which is known formally as San Diego International Airport, said Thella Bowens, president and chief executive officer.
Officials said the number of takeoffs and landings there also reached a new all-time high in 2007, in exceeding 227,000. That represented almost a 3 percent increase over the nearly 221,000 flights in 2006.
To accommodate growing demand, the authority is working to add 10 gates to Terminal 2 and expand parking.
