Source: Kaeding kicked 5 games with fractured leg

Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding played in nearly five full games with a fractured lower left leg, including hitting four field goals in Sunday's loss to New England in the AFC Championship Game.

A person familiar with the situation confirmed the injury to The Associated Press on Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team hasn't acknowledged the extent of the injury.

Kaeding's left leg is his plant leg.

Kaeding was hurt helping to make the tackle on the opening kickoff of the Chargers' home win over the Denver Broncos on Dec. 24. The team described it as a bruise. While saying the injury could be similar to the broken fibula sustained by fullback Lorenzo Neal two weeks earlier, the Chargers never used the word "fracture" in describing Kaeding's injury.

The North County Times asked Kaeding and coach Norv Turner about the injury on Jan. 10 as speculation swirled that the bone was fractured or chipped.

Turner ruled out that the injury was anything more than a bruise. Asked directly whether there was a fracture or chip, Turner said "No." A few minutes later, Kaeding picked his words carefully and was visibly uncomfortable when asked about speculation that the injury was worse than a bruise.

"I don't know, man," Kaeding said at the time. "That's what we got to say. It is what it is. We're just going to go play through it and get it good."

Kaeding couldn't be reached for comment on Friday. Turner and general manager A.J. Smith didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

"I don't talk about injuries at all," team trainer James Collins told The Associated Press when reached by phone.

So many players sustained major injuries it's amazing the team got as far as they did. I won't even try to list them, but many players are hurt a lot worse than most fans realize. These guys are going to heal up, come back strong, and win the Super Bowl next season. They have the talent, they have the depth, they have the defense and Philip Rivers is going to improve his consistency and see more of the field. GO CHARGERS

Get off the prozac get out in the sunshine & exercise maybe even try going to a football game next season you might want to start with a PeeWee league game 1st & if you don`t get kicked out move up to pop warner & so on. Good luck

Danny wrote on Jan 26, 2008 8:01 PM:Why do people like "who cares" bother to post stuff? If you feel like he does about LT and the team, why read a Chargers story? It's really interesting how some people turn into Internet snipers, trying to ruin LT's hard-earned reputation. Listen "Who Cares," this article is about Kaeding's unbelievable effort the final month of the season with a broken leg. Why insert your vitriolic, uninformed opinion about LT here? You really have no understanding of the game of football and you should find something else to Internet snipe about. Anyone who questions LT's heart is truly, truly an idiot. LT has worked his whole life to be able to play in a game like the AFC title game. It's his passion and desire that has made him great. Anyone who thinks he's a wimp and should've been playing is clueless. In my opinion, the media has really turned into a problem in this country. Their so eager to find the next salacious story they're willing to be unbelievably off-base and unfair.

LT knows whats up wrote on Jan 26, 2008 10:24 PM:Sometimes radio hosts such as Philly Billy say something they really don`t mean just to get a reaction. Thank goodness LT has the intelligence to see through all the BS and see it for what it is LT will continue to work harder than any player in the league and hopefully he will be healthy to play in his next championship opportunity. Hopefully the Padres will keep us interested til next september

To who cares wrote on Jan 27, 2008 8:26 PM:I agree and all of the pathetic fans know nothing about football. When they reference pop warner, maybe LT should go back and play at that level. He is a crybaby and a whiner.

Keading do some tackling drills with the team so the next time when yo tackle that guy he won't crush your leg bones... as for the other idiots on here go back to Bostoon and leave us to our misery till next year.
