ESCONDIDO - The Senior Service Council will offer free help with income tax preparation for seniors from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays starting Feb. 1 in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building, 728 N. Broadway, in the Joslyn Senior Center complex. Help will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis; no appointments. Information: (760) 480-0611.
'Use the Web, Work From Home' class set
SAN MARCOS - The city's Community Services Department will offer a "Use the Web and Work From Home" class for adults from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the San Marcos Community Center, and from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at the San Elijo Recreation Center.
Participants can learn about business plans, how to set up a business online using a Web site, as well as some of the pitfalls that may be encountered. The course will include a half-hour private consultation with the instructor.

ARC Trio to bring jazz to the library
ESCONDIDO - The ARC Trio will perform a jazz concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Escondido Public Library's First Thursday Concert. The concert will feature selections from the trio's debut album, "Triptych Mirror," as well as standards and original compositions.

Dems to discuss Rancho Guejito
ESCONDIDO - The Escondido Democratic Club will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave.
The featured speaker will be Jeannette Hartman, a San Diego County conservationist who is working with a consortium of 20 groups to prevent development of Rancho Guejito, a 21,400-acre parcel of land that lies just east of Valley Center. It is one of the last old ranchos surviving from the land grant system of the 1800s.

LSM Democrats to meet Feb. 9
SAN MARCOS - The Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Lakeside Pavilion, 1105 La Bonita Drive. All LSM Democratic Club meetings this year will be held on the second Saturday of the month.
Raymond Lutz, president of the East County Democratic Club, will talk about the founder of Blackwater, recent events involving Blackwater in Iraq and Blackwater's proposed training camp in San Diego County.

2nd Tuesday Book Club to meet
ESCONDIDO - The Escondido Public Library invites readers to the next 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Turrentine Room at the library, 239 S. Kalmia St.
This month's selection is "Eat the Document" by Dana Spiotta. The novel is the story of a man and a woman who share a life of radicalism in the 1970s, but are forced to separate and live the next 20 years apart as fugitives.
The 2nd Tuesday Book Club will continue with Ha Jin's "War Trash" on March 11 and Marilynne Robinson's "Gilead" on April 8.

RB Library to hold book sale
RANCHO BERNARDO - The Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library will hold its Winter Book Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Hardcovers will be offered at half the marked price; paperbacks at five for $1. The sale will be held on the library's second floor, 17110 Bernardo Center Drive. Information: (858) 592-0177.
Lectures planned for adults in RB
RANCHO BERNARDO - The Continuing Education Center at Rancho Bernardo will offer a free lecture by Dr. William Cheek titled "Eleanor Roosevelt: The Great Lady and the Great Depression" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Oaks North Community Center, 12578 Oaks North Drive. Refreshments will be offered at 7 p.m. The lecture is the second in a series co-sponsored by the North County Times.

- Two-part AARP Safe Driving Course, noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Feb. 8. Participants can earn a certificate entitling them to a discount on auto insurance. Cost is $10. Reservations are required.
- Republican Women's Club board meeting, 9 to 11 a.m. Monday.
- Consultations with health insurance specialist Patty Ann Born, 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 8. Call for a 30-minute appointment.
- Income tax assistance, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

Consciousness lecture series to begin
LA JOLLA - The World Healer Institute, a local nonprofit corporation, will present a lecture on consciousness by Chief Executive Officer and founder Joseph Costa, Ph.D. at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Sheraton La Jolla Hotel.
Costa, a world-renowned lecturer and author and former Solana Beach resident, is a nominee for The Templeton Prize for progress toward research or discoveries about spiritual realities.
This is the first in a series of lectures titled "Evolution of Consciousness." Topics will include consciousness and its changes, health in the human body, self-destruction, science and oneness.
