POWAY ---- Kids will have an opportunity Saturday to reel in 12-pound trout in the city's annual Youth Fishing Derby at Lake Poway.

The lake will be stocked with 4,000 pounds of trout ---- nearly double the amount released last year ----- for the free event, which officials hope will draw at least 600 kids. Registration for the event, hosted by Capt. Ron Baker of Fish Talk Radio, begins at 6 a.m. and fishing will continue until noon.

For the first time in more than a decade, though, only 15-year-olds and under will be allowed to fish. Parents are allowed on the lake to assist their kids.

"It's an opportunity for the kids to learn how to fish and do it when it's really not going to cost them anything," Lake Poway park ranger Steve November said. "It's a lot of fun."

Kids will be able to fish off the shoreline or from one of 48 boats that are being rented at the $17 half-day rate to parents and guardians.

Of the 4,000 pounds of fish released in the lake Thursday morning, a quarter of them will be trophy size ---- meaning that they are between 5 to 12 pounds ---- November said. The remaining fish will range in weight from about 1 pound to 5 pounds, he said.

Kids with the largest catches and the most interesting fishing story will be eligible to receive free rod, reel, tackle boxes and fishing lures.

An awards ceremony and raffle prize drawing will follow the derby, along with a barbecue lunch for all the registered participants.

The lake will be closed today in preparation for the event and on Saturday until noon.

For more information about the derby, call (858) 668-4770. Lake Poway is at 14644 Lake Poway Road.

As a member of the San Diego Rod and Reel Club, thank you to El Cajon Ford for providing the food which we will BBQ for the kids for lunch. I look forward to this event and volunteering my time to assist the kids and help them reel in the whoppers. Bring the whole family, it is a great time for all.
