Palomar Airport to open U.S. customs station

CARLSBAD ---- Starting Thursday, McClellan-Palomar Airport will have its own U.S. customs office, something airport officials say they've wanted for years.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are expected to join elected leaders and airport-related business owners to celebrate the station's opening at 11 a.m. Thursday.

San Diego County owns and operates the airport, which is just north of Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad.

County officials say the customs office will allow pilots coming from Mexico to fly directly to the airport in Carlsbad rather than stopping first at San Diego's Brown Field to clear customs. However, pilots can't arrive at Carlsbad's custom station without advance notice; they have to book an appointment for the service, county officials said.

The customs office is being housed on a short-term basis in the airport's old administration building. The county is building a new terminal and the office will relocate into that building late this year, county officials said.
