SAN DIEGO -- A small, quickly extinguished fire prompted evacuations at a Sorrento Valley commercial laboratory today, but caused no injuries or health hazards, authorities reported.

The blaze erupted shortly before noon in a ventilation hood at Professional Service Industries, 6867 Nancy Ridge Drive, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

A built-in fire suppression suppression system put out the flames before emergency crews arrived, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

By then, however, smoke had filled the engineering consulting business, prompting its supervisors to clear out their workers.

A hazardous-materials team determined that no toxic materials had been released during the fire, Luque said.

The business's employees were able to re-enter the building in the early afternoon, he said.
