Now I urged the Sheriff's department to start doing their job and doing their part to free our breathing air of hydrocarbons emission. It is simply a matter of enforcing the speed limit laws. An automobile spews out hydrocarbon from five places: the engine, the fuel lines, the tank, the tail pipe, the oil system, etc. At speeds above 45 mph the emissions increase the faster the car is driven. At 65 mph the emissions are more than twice as much as at 45 mph. A crack down on speeders would do a lot in helping to clean up the air we breathe.
Wait what is this wrote on Feb 8, 2008 6:41 AM:1986 double speak? First off it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk and there is products out there that you can spray on your license that is clear to the eye, so how do they know you have it on?
No. County Reader wrote on Feb 8, 2008 12:04 PM:That includes the Sheriff whom left his engine running last weekend while he went into a local restaurant to get his cup of coffee. Practice what you preach !!!
to n county reader- wrote on Feb 8, 2008 1:22 PM:the sheriff must keep his vehicle running for 3 reasons- 1. in case he gets a call and has to go fast, 2. to keep the computer active 3. so the dispatchers can monitor his location with automatic vehicle locator
Peter wrote on Feb 8, 2008 2:55 PM:What about the laws already in effect? Last Sunday when it was raining I was passed by a San Diego Harbor Police unit on Harbor Drive in San Diego. His wipers were going, but he did not have his headlights on. Also, considering how much law enforcement personnel use their personal cell phones for conversations they don’t want to have on the radio, I hope they are all ready to switch to hands free use come 1 July.
Rain wrote on Feb 8, 2008 4:38 PM:I can't believe the number of people not using their headlights when it rains. Their wipers are going like crazy but no lights. Unfortunately this law doesn't seem to have gotten to the general public. Maybe use those signs about time to get to the freeway for more than that.
Matt wrote on Feb 9, 2008 12:09 AM:Carter, you must be a senior citizen. You want the speed to be lowered to 45, you are taking way too many drugs, time to cut back. Then you want the police to go after every driver who is going over 65, You must be on some weird medications.
sorry peter wrote on Feb 9, 2008 6:50 AM:When they wrote the cell phone law the exempted law enforcement. They can still use their cell phones without hands free devices. You see it is because of their superior training they can use a cell phone and a laptop computer while driving and keep both eyes on the road.
To Peter wrote on Feb 9, 2008 9:37 AM:There are exemptions for Law Enforcement to use cell phones while driving for obvious reasons...
To Peter wrote on Feb 9, 2008 10:10 AM:law enforcement personnel are exempt from the new cell phone rule as well as any emergency vehicles. hope they dont crash.
Brad wrote on Feb 9, 2008 3:03 PM:It's also illegal to be in this country without the proper paperwork and no one does anything about that...so will they do anything about this? Only if you're a gringo!!
Carter: wrote on Feb 9, 2008 5:05 PM: To Matt: You are not reading. I want the police to enforce the speed limit thereby cutting down on hydrocarbons emitted into the air. Simply enforce the speed limit for better health. Pay attention when you read.
Jack wrote on Feb 9, 2008 7:43 PM:I checked with my auto service person, and he told me my drive 85 mph because I have overdrive. My vehicle works harder at 55-65 mph than 85 mph. So that's why I drive faster, besides I have to keep up with the rest of the traffic!
Crowley wrote on Feb 10, 2008 12:53 AM:Does the law actually state "wireless" phones? If that's the case I'll just get my old one out of the attic. It has a wire that attaches to the console.
Rob wrote on Feb 10, 2008 9:24 PM:You are a little too wrapped up in this hydrocarbon thing Carter. Anyone over 40 who has lived their whole life in this county knows the air is so much cleaner now than it was when we grew up, even though the number of cars and trucks and buses has increased drastically. There were smog days when we were young when our lungs would hurt when we would be out playing.
