Carlsbad closes part of Las Encinas Creek bridge

CARLSBAD ---- One of the southbound lanes of Carlsbad Boulevard at Palomar Airport Road has been closed as the city looks into repairing the Las Encinas Creek Bridge, officials announced Friday.
The 95-year-old bridge received a poor rating from inspectors last year, and city officials have said that seaside conditions have caused corrosion problems.
A rating system compiled by the U.S. Department of Transportation showed the Carlsbad bridge was one of 13 in the county deemed structurally insufficient. City officials have stressed that the federal rating means the bridge needs work but isn't in immediate danger of collapse.
The new lane closure stretches between Palomar Airport Road to Poinsettia Lane.
Records from the city indicate the bridge was constructed in 1914 and widened twice after that. Originally it carried north- and southbound traffic.
The city plans to eventually realign the roadway and eliminate the wide separation between the north- and southbound lanes.
The city "had hoped to be able to combine this bridge replacement with the eventual alignment of Carlsbad Boulevard," according to a statement from the Public Works Department. "But, the decision was made that repairs should be made now, rather than later.”
