Juvenile detention program teacher admits possessing child porn

SAN DIEGO -- Federal prosecutors announced Tuesday that a former teacher at a San Diego-area boys juvenile detention center pleaded guilty to a charge that he possessed child pornography.
Edgardo Vilas, 42, faces up to 10 years in prison and lifetime supervised release when he is sentenced May 2, the U.S. attorney's office said in a news release.
A special agent with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement alleged in a document filed with the court that an investigation of a child exploitation Web site led agents to Vilas through an e-mail address and PayPal account used to buy images of child pornography.
The special agent alleged that Vilas acknowledged to agents that he possessed a DVD containing child pornography, but denied ever sexually molesting any of his students.
Vilas told authorities that he taught at Rancho Del Campo, Juvenile Court and Community Schools, the special agent said.
Rancho Del Campo is a residential camp for young men between the ages of 13 and 19 who have broken the law, according to the Juvenile Court and Community Schools section of the County Office of Education's Web site.
