Communty news briefs: Horsemanship classes being offered

FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Community Center and Gayle Lawrence will offer horsemanship classes this winter and spring.

- Six-week "Mom & Me" horsemanship class sessions for ages 3 to 6 are scheduled for various times Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays this month through May. The one-hour sessions will introduce young riders to the basics of horse safety and riding under the guidance of a certified instructor. Also, ongoing four-week-long "Mom & Me" horsemanship classes are offered for riders who wish to continue to work on their skills.

- "So You Want to Buy a Horse?" will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 23. The class is recommended for those looking into buying or leasing a horse. Students can learn about the time, energy and money involved in feeding, grooming and caring for a backyard horse, as well as about veterinary care, hoof care, choosing feed and finding a riding club or instructor in the area.

Art center hosts watercolor exhibit

FALLBROOK ---- The Art Center at Fallbrook is hosting the National Watercolor Society Travel Exhibition and the Watercolor U.S.A. Honor Society Juried Exhibition through March 16. This is the first time both shows have been together at the Fallbrook facility. Art lovers can see works by some of the finest artists from 28 states and China.

The Art Center at Fallbrook is at 103 S. Main St. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is $5; free for center members and children. Information: (760) 728-1414.

Temecula artist plans workshop

FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Art Association will host an all-day workshop featuring artist Gabriele Baber of Temecula on Feb. 24. Baber will show attendees how to use water-soluble oil paints. Workshop fee is $50; $25 for association members.

Baber's work has been used on posters for many local and national events. Recently her work was featured on the Temecula Balloon and Wine Festival poster, as well as on the book, "Temecula Valley: Then and Now." Take a hike at Daley Ranch

ESCONDIDO ---- Free, guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch.

All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least two liters of water and wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths younger than 18 must be with an adult. No pets are allowed. Meet at La Honda Drive entrance, unless otherwise noted.

- 8:30 a.m. Feb. 16: Join naturalist Jack Pomeroy for a moderately strenuous, 4 1/2-mile hike on the Engelmann Loop Trail. Pomeroy will talk about the geology, common plants and trees at the ranch. Meet at the Cougar Pass parking lot.

- 2 p.m. Feb. 16: Join naturalist Katya McLane for a moderately paced 3 1/2-mile hike along Boulder Loop Trail.

Multiple sclerosis group to meet

The guest speaker will be Mae-Ghan Fletcher, Emotional Health program coordinator for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Pacific South Coast Chapter.

Gardening with succulents is the topic

Horticulturist Patrick Anderson will present "Gardening With Succulents." Anderson is a popular speaker, whose own Fallbrook succulent garden has appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers, and is featured in a new book by Debra Baldwin called "Designing With Succulents."

'Vista for XP Users' sessions planned

'Senior Class' day trip planned

ESCONDIDO ---- Joslyn Senior Center Travel Services will offer a trip to see "Senior Class" on March 28 at the Annenberg Theater in downtown Palm Springs. The show is a good-natured, feel-good musical comedy revue about people in their senior years, featuring familiar faces such as Steve Rossi, Mary Ann Mobley, Ruta Lee and Joey English. Lake Poway open on Presidents' Day

POWAY ---- Lake Poway will be open from sunrise to sunset on Presidents' Day, Feb. 18, with all areas open on a first-come, first-served basis. Operafest planned for Feb. 20

POWAY ---- The North County Inland Senior Center will host the San Diego Opera Ensemble on Feb. 20. Lunch will be at noon, followed by the Operafest at 1, featuring favorite arias by Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and more.

Rancho Adobe docents sought

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation is recruiting volunteers to join its docent program at Rancho de los Penasquitos Adobe and Preserve.

Docents learn about San Diego's first families through the historic Rancho Adobe, and then share that knowledge with the rest of the community. Rancho Adobe, built in 1832, was part of the county's first Mexican land grant and sits on a 3,700-acre open space preserve.

Volunteer docents can share the adobe's history through a variety of activities, including assisting as tour guides, leading educational programs, helping to maintain the grounds or creating materials for the public.

RB Community Foundation names board members

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation has welcomed five new board members this year ---- Trudy Armstrong, Gary Carlson, Ted Gaasch, John Goodrich and Brian McLean.

Young Marines training to begin

Center to offer 'Spirit' program

Library to host Jewish book readings, talks

ENCINITAS ---- The San Diego County Library will host the national "Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature" scholar-led reading and book discussion series. The newest series explores the theme: "A Mind of Her Own: Fathers And Daughters In a Changing World" from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 20, March 12, April 9, May 14, and June 11 in the community room of the soon-to-reopen Encinitas Branch of the San Diego County Library, 540 Cornish Drive. Center to offer senior pilates
