RENO, Nev. -- A Reno-area hotel-casino has announced the layoffs of 28 employees and reduced hours for other workers.
Boomtown officials said the layoffs were prompted by a seasonal slowdown and the loss of its truck stop. The latter was razed to make room for a new Cabela's store.
"This is something that we did not want to do," General Manager David Williams said. "But it is something that we deemed necessary for the business' health."
Among those laid off from its work force of 630 employees were the food and beverage manager, the supervisor of hotel operations and the security director.
The property is located along Interstate 80 near the California line in Verdi, just west of Reno.
The layoffs coincide with a nearly 50 percent drop in the stock price of Boomtown's parent company, Pinnacle Entertainment, which owns seven other major gambling properties in Missouri, Louisiana, Indiana and the Bahamas.
