GUALALA, Calif. -- Rescuers are losing hope for two people swept away in rough surf at Northern California beaches where ocean temperatures hover just above 50 degrees.

The U.S. Coast Guard continued to search Saturday night for a 42-year-old woman who disappeared off Gualala Point Regional Park in Sonoma County earlier in the day.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Jonathan Cilley said witnesses last saw her trying to pull her dog from the surf. Her name was not released.

Cilley said authorities have suspended a search for 27-year-old Christopher Partridge, who was washed off the rocks early Saturday at Limekiln State Park near Big Sur.

In January, 19-year-old Ann Madden of Petaluma drowned when she tried to save her two dogs from the surf at another Sonoma County beach.
