'Horns stare down Aggies

D.J. Augustin scored 27 points and No. 7 Texas rolled over visiting No. 22 Texas A&M 77-50 on Monday night for the Longhorns' sixth straight win.

The rout was a complete reversal of A&M's dominant 17-point win in College Station on Jan. 30, which was Texas' last loss. The Longhorns (22-4, 9-2 Big 12) ran away with this one from the start with a 16-4 run to open the game and a front line that matched the Aggies' muscle for 40 minutes.

Augustin was dazzling in the first half, nearly outscoring A&M (20-6, 6-5) by himself with 17 points as Texas built a 39-18 lead. The Aggies looked surprised by the Longhorns' physical play under the basket -- Texas blocked 12 shots -- and a stifling defense that held A&M to 19 percent shooting in the first half and their lowest scoring output of the season.

Damion James added 15 points and nine rebounds for Texas, which has used the winning streak to earn a tie for first in the Big 12.

From the start, the teams traded bruising screens, blocked shots, dunks and menacing stares between the big men in a physical contest typical of this heated rivalry.

Xavier 81, Rhode Island 77

At South Kingston, R.I.: Josh Duncan scored 23 points and No. 10 Xavier (22-4, 10-1 Atlantic 10) overcame a furious second-half run to hold off Rhode Island (20-6, 6-5).

Georgetown 68, Providence 58

At Providence, R.I.: Roy Hibbert had 18 points inside, Jonathan Wallace added 14 from the outside and No. 12 Georgetown (21-4, 11-3 Big East) beat Providence (13-12, 4-10).

Louisville 61, Syracuse 50

At Louisville, Ky.: Terrence Williams scored all 12 of his points in the second half and No. 18 Louisville (21-6, 11-3 Big East) held off Syracuse (17-10, 7-7).

Saint Mary's 100, Pepperdine 64

At Malibu: Patrick Mills scored 18 points and No. 23 Saint Mary's (23-3, 10-1) hit 17 3-pointers in a win over Pepperdine (9-18, 3-8).

WOMEN

Notes

MEN'S POLL: Memphis survived its closest game of the season to remain the lone unbeaten and a unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press' college basketball poll. Losses by Duke and Kansas last week allowed Tennessee to make the jump from fourth to No. 2, setting up the 38th career matchup of the top two teams in the rankings. Tennessee (23-2) is at Memphis (25-0) on Saturday.

NORTH CAROLINA: PG Ty Lawson probably will miss his fifth straight game with a sprained left ankle on Wednesday when the No. 3 Tar Heels play at North Carolina State.

INDIANA: F D.J. White has a sprained left knee but is expected to play against Purdue in a key Big Ten game tonight.

WOMEN'S POLL: Connecticut regained the top spot in The Associated Press women's basketball poll after receiving 38 of the 50 first-place votes. Tennessee, meanwhile, lost its grip on No. 1 and fell to No. 3 following a home loss to LSU on Thursday.
