Vista courts Sonic Burger

Negotiations under way to bring a franchise to redevelopment area | Sunday, March 2, 2008 9:09 PM PST

VISTA ---- Sonic Drive-In's iconic carhops may soon be serving burgers in Vista.

City officials have been negotiating for weeks with a representative of the Oklahoma-based chain to bring one of its popular restaurants to Vista's redevelopment area, a city official has confirmed.

"We've reached an agreement on how we would structure a deal that would bring them to the city," Bill Rawlings, the city's redevelopment director, said last week.

"What we haven't done is finalized where they would go," he said.

Any redevelopment agreement would require the City Council's approval.

"We're hoping to reach a conclusion this quarter," Rawlings said of the negotiations.

Sonic has more than 3,350 fast-food locations in the United States. None, however, is in San Diego County.

The closest is in Anaheim, roughly 60 miles away.

Rawlings declined to discuss what sites in Vista are being considered. The city's redevelopment area is made up of hundreds of acres along major corridors. The acreage could double this summer if the council designates new neighborhoods for revitalization.

Sonic restaurants are a throwback to drive-ins of the 1950s. Customers typically congregate on outdoor patios or order from their cars via intercom.

The food is delivered by carhops, who frequently wear roller skates.

The company's stronghold is the Sun Belt; Texas has the most locations at 921.

A Sonic Corp. spokeswoman said last week she could not immediately comment on the company's plans for Southern California.

The state already has 38 Sonic drive-ins and is listed as a "developing market" on the company's investor Web site.

"I would suspect that this area is a prime location for them, and they'll probably come in with more than one," said George Whalin, president of Retail Management Consultants in Carlsbad.

Sonic, a publically held company, opened 175 restaurants in fiscal year 2007 and reported revenues of $770.5 million, an 11 percent increase from the previous year.

Its menu includes items such as Coneys (chili-smothered hot dogs) and custom-flavored sodas.

Rawlings said a Sonic restaurant would be a nice addition to Vista because it would lure people from other cities.

"People will drive to a Sonic," he said.

Whalin said the company would probably do well in San Diego County, competing with the likes of McDonald's and In-N-Out Burger.

"That sort of quick, easy fast food business continues to thrive," Whalin said.

Chubton wrote on Mar 3, 2008 11:15 AM:I'm curious to hear how generous the incentives the city officials are offering to a company that should already be considering expanding into the S.California market.
I suspect the tax payers are going to eat it.

Sue wrote on Mar 3, 2008 11:39 AM:YUCK, just what Vista needs more fast junk food. EEEWWW! How about a Jimbos or a Wholefoods.

George wrote on Mar 3, 2008 12:44 PM:There is a Rally's on the east side of Escondido, frequently offering a pair of Big Bufords for $4.00, sometimes for $3.00, and their big shakes are really big with no skimping on the chocolate.

Sonic Fan wrote on Mar 3, 2008 2:01 PM:Craig,

You've made an old man very happy with this piece. You need to stay on it. Weekly updates. Daily, if need be. Vista should be giving away the store to make this happen.

I will be at this Sonic on its opening day of business and probably every other week thereafter. I did try the drive to Anaheim once or twice, and it's just too damn far from where I live unless you're going to be in the area anyway. This is more like 30 miles (60 RT), and that's a snap. Besides, if Vista succeeds they'll be more willing to consider pushing south. There's a zillion of them in the Central Valley; this should be just as good a market for them.-

Yum! wrote on Mar 3, 2008 2:52 PM:I used to go to the Sonic in Oceanside by Oceanside High School and I loved it. Grilled Cheese and a Shake!
Please come to Vista soon! I will definitely be putting in my order!-

Drew wrote on Mar 3, 2008 2:56 PM:All this means is more junk food and litter. These businesses only keep a small amount of money in the community and do little for the local economy. Of course, local medical professionals profit from the increases in obesity and diabities. It would be nice if the City of Vista encouraged businesses that provided a living wage and benefits to relocate here.-

James wrote on Mar 3, 2008 9:44 PM:Love it! I can't wait until I can eat some Sonic. This is the only thing I've been missing since living in CA...

Sonics wrote on Mar 3, 2008 10:56 PM:I don't understand why they don't branch out to San Diego. Why do companies do this? The restaurants we want aren't here and the ones we can do with out are all over the place. Doesn't make any sense.

sonic lover wrote on Mar 4, 2008 8:06 AM:BRING IT ON! We are more than ready for SONIC. There is a demand for it, so supply it. The sooner the better. -

Frank B. wrote on Mar 4, 2008 8:34 AM:Sonic Drive-Ins is a Texas icon. It puts In'N Out to shame. Vista is in for a real treat if it comes to town. I predict that every city in San Diego county will have a Sonic within five years. Can't wait!

Big B wrote on Mar 4, 2008 10:42 AM:Comparing In-N-Out and Sonic makes no sense; they are entirely different entities, with different aims. Comparing their burgers or shakes is a reasonable thing to do, however (I, for one, find In-N-Out's burgers to be better than the Sonics of 10 years ago - I'm not sure if they've changed).

Sonic collapsed for a while, but seems to be coming back again. I think they are being *very* careful about new markets - they don't want to be another Krispy Kreme.

Hey Sue - nobody is forcing you to eat there. :)

Maybe wrote on Mar 4, 2008 10:46 AM:Sonic could be better than In-N-Out but, it can't touch Tommy's Original!! No way, no how!

to FRANK b. wrote on Mar 4, 2008 10:56 AM:I've eaten many times at both sonic and in'n'out, sonic burgers are not even close to in'n'out burgers. sonic does have a great variety of items that are very tasty (dogs and tots=awesome!)but in'n'out burgers rule.

Chubton wrote on Mar 4, 2008 12:20 PM:Maybe city officials should spend their time seeking to add high paying jobs to the area.

TJ wrote on Mar 4, 2008 2:29 PM:We need more taco shops not sonics!

roller skates? wrote on Mar 4, 2008 2:41 PM:I have been to over 30 different sonics in 10 different states over the past 20 years and not once have I seen employees on skates.

Average wrote on Mar 4, 2008 11:27 PM:Their food is okay, I think its more of the mystique surrounding them because their ads inundate local airwaves and there isnt a Sonic in sight. When I was living in the Central Valley there were at least two in the big cities like Fresno and Visalia. ANYONE WHO COMPARES THEM TO IN N OUT IS SICK IN THE HEAD. Good, but seriously, not THAT good!

okay food wrote on Mar 4, 2008 11:33 PM:so, once the mystique wears off, it will become like any old hamburger stand, which is exactly what it is. After two years of having a Sonic one block from my apartment maybe I am just used to it, but it is not anything incredibly special. AND IT IS, I REPEAT, NOT EVEN ON THE SAME TIER AS IN AND OUT. Its just In and Out doesn't run a thousand commercials in places where the closest chain is 60 miles away. Sonic has at least a dozen commercials a day down here!

CrimeHater wrote on Mar 5, 2008 5:17 AM:
In-N-Out has better burgers, I would agree, but Sonic offers a welcome change from the production-line fast-food rut everyone else offers.
And I have been to Sonics in West-Central Tennessee where the carhops wore roller skates - it was very cool, actually . . .-

Sue wrote on Mar 5, 2008 8:50 AM:No one forces me to do anything. It even smells bad driving passed junk food places. All that grease and processed foods. Good thing there are back routes to avoids those places.

poppadoc! wrote on Mar 5, 2008 8:47 PM:ummm well the one by oside high was a perfect recipe for disaster....do u know how many fights and mini riots happened @ that sonic... i can remember 2 or 3 in the summer alone back in 92....ahhhh the good old days of gang banging.... i have 5 bucks that says that there will be problems within the first 3 months of business... i know...sad but true

Alexis wrote on Jun 30, 2008 1:17 PM:My husband and I are from Texas and I am so used to going to sonic everday for a drink. There is nothing here like it!! We will drive all the way to Anaheim when we need a fix. We would love to have one so close!
