Michael Turner has found both opportunity and riches after agreeing to terms on a six-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Turner was stuck behind LaDainian Tomlinson with the Chargers and will be getting his long-awaited first chance to be an NFL team's main running back. His contract is reportedly worth $34.5 million, with $15 million guaranteed.

Turner arrived in Atlanta on Friday and visited with the Falcons all weekend. He was impressed with the organization, which is in rebuilding mode after a 4-12 season.

"Everybody is fresh with a clean slate and trying to build things back up," Turner told the Associated Press. "I did not come into the visit expecting to sign so soon. I didn't know what to expect."

Turner, 26, gained 1,257 yards in four seasons behind Tomlinson and has a career average of 5.5 yards per carry. He was the consensus top running back available among this year's free-agent crop.

"We are pleased to be able to add a very talented running back and a player who has produced at a high level in this league when given the opportunity," Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said in a news release. "We think he's ready to take the next step and have a more prominent role in an offense, and we are happy he decided that opportunity is going to be here in Atlanta."

Turner gained 316 yards in the regular season in 2007 and an additional 164 in the postseason when Tomlinson was slowed by a knee injury.

Turner had three 100-yard rushing games during his time with the Chargers. He was a fifth-round pick in 2004 after a standout college career at Northern Illinois.

Turner's departure leaves the Chargers looking for a new backup to Tomlinson. Darren Sproles, a role player, and fullback Andrew Pinnock are the only other veteran running backs on the roster.

General manager A.J. Smith often expresses that he prefers to acquire players through the NFL draft rather than free agency, so it's likely that the Chargers will target a backup running back in April's draft.

Next year's draft looks solid unless AJ deals a pick or two in next year's draft to obtain a higher pick in this year's draft. I think he'll try to trade down with 1st rounder this year to obtain an early 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder. I think he's got his eye on a sleeper CB (Justin King?) with that 1st pick and an RB (Matt Forte?)with the next one. He said at his state of the Chargers press conference that OT is the deepest position in the draft therefore I think he will likely draft OT and DL with later 2nd day picks.-

Bobby wrote on Mar 3, 2008 8:23 AM:Sad, very sad. Not for Turner, he gets the $. The Chargers may get a 3 or 4 comp pick BUT we could of had a #1 in a trade last year. A.J. the scout still has not learned to be a GM. What has more value, a backup RB for one year or a #1 pick that could start for 10??? Do the math. AJ's only comp. pick so far,,, Brees for Waters! Great trade you say? No way or he would not of had to bring in Smith from the 49's-

Sean C. wrote on Mar 3, 2008 11:26 AM:Still babbling Bobby. While the rest of the NFL world heaps praise upon our GM you continue to make yourself look foolish. Maybe football commentary is not your niche.

leandre t. wrote on Mar 3, 2008 11:49 AM:My goodness! When are you people (not all of you... you know who you are) going to get off of AJ's frickin' back?! Some of you so called Chargers fans such as "Bobby" have no clue what ur talking about and have probably been Chargers fans since when... 2004? Sounds more like hurt feelings over losing your favorite players like Donnie or Drew, than anything else.
Get over it! It's about winning a championship.... bottom line. Calling AJ a "scout" is embarrassing on YOUR PART. I've learned over the years that players come and go; but the Chargers are our team. If AJ were to get a "Herschel Walker trade" offer for LT next month, i'd be all for it. And i LOVE LT as much as ANYONE... but thanks for the memories LT.
My point is, do what it takes to help the CHARGERS win a Super Bowl. And until some of you get over your childish reasons to hate AJ... you're going to continue to embarrass yourselves in these forums. Look, I'm not saying to trade LT by no means... just making a point, so spare me with remarks about trading LT.
That's not what i'm saying, just a hypothetical point...

NO ONE absolutely NO ONE ever gets it 100% a 100% of the time... BUT look at his track record so far!! My goodness!! AJ is head and shoulders above what we are used to as Bolts fans! Gates, Merriman, Cromartie, McNeill, Hardwick, Dielman, on and on the list could go... Please go root for the Raiders or someone else...-

leandre t. wrote on Mar 3, 2008 2:37 PM:Well said Bob!
Guys, remember?: Mikael Ricks, Charlie Jones, Mark Seay, Jimmy Oliver, Blaze Winter, Jermaine Fazande, William Fuller, Leonard Russell, Aaron "don't call me Arron" Hayden, Freddie Jones, Ronney Jenkins, Brian "standing" Still, Craig Whilahan, Zeke & Moses Moreno, Aaron Taylor, Brian Brennen, Nate Lewis, Nate Jacquet?... and i didn't even mention Ryan Leaf!
God, those were off the top of my head... and even worst... STARTERS for us! So, anyones that gets on AJ is an absolute moron or is around 13 years old and don't go back that far! True bolt fans will actually throw up in their collective mouths a little, upon reading that list of players mentioned above. I know i just did...
THANK THE FOOTBALL GODS FOR AJ! -

Bob-Nuts4theBolts wrote on Mar 4, 2008 2:00 AM:leandre, We have an infamously sad tradition here in the land of the Bolts. Ryan Leaf was not the 1st great bust... In 1974 the year that yielded such players as Dave Casper, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Randy Gradishar,JACK LAMBERT!! Amongst many, many others. Who did my Chargers pick with the second overall pick in the 1st round after the Cowboys picked Too Tall Jones? Some guy named Bo Mathews... Yeah you bet I am happy AJ has his hand on the wheel and is in charge. Harland Svare, Tank Younger, STEVE ORTMAYER! (Al Davis' plant), Bobby (give away 1st rounders)Beathard!! I go way back to the powder blue 60's Chargers. You bet I have a long memory. And I am enjoying how shrewdly AJ is moving the pieces with the system that is now in place. Fiscal restraint, flexibility in the draft with compensatory picks, agressive pre-emptive signings when a player is still under contract, finding elite type players in undrafted free agents, weeding out problem "characters", in essence having a PLAN and implementing it such a way that is making this a first rate organization. A culture of winning is what is being constructed here. Listen to what others are saying about the Bolts... Sure there will always be detractors, but for the most part they are one of the most respected teams in the NFL. Not even in the hay day of the Air Coryell era was this as it is now. Towards the end of my life I am so happy to finally see something I consider 1st rate. Maybe I will finally see a Bolts team lift up that Super Bowl trophy!! GO BOLTS!! Yeah Baby!!!-

leandre t. wrote on Mar 4, 2008 9:01 AM:My long lost grandpa... is that you?! Bob-nuts4thebolts, you obviously go back with the Bolts before i was even born and i'm 34. Good stuff grandpa! See you on Thanks Giving! ;0)

Sean C., sorry i had to do that man... just had to put a few things in perspective about AJ for some people.

Bob-Nuts4theBolts wrote on Mar 5, 2008 11:07 PM:Sure felt weird seeing Junior Seau tackle Michael Turner for a loss in the red zone in recent playoff game against Pats... Will feel just as weird seeing Michael running ball against Bolts in upcoming visit next season by Falcons at the Q...

BoltDan wrote on Mar 6, 2008 1:42 PM:I am just as un happy as Bobby with AJ. AJ has picked some good picks but all of you Chargers fans have been through as much as I have with all those other busts (you must have you named them all) so without a RING AJ is what he is. He has found guys to play but just like we harshed on Marty for not winning the big one so to does AJ deserve any and all critizism.

And How about MBP40 comment above: He harped on NE for signing all those free agents. Hate to break it to you but who have we lost to the last few times???? Nice comment.

So with all that said what will be the weak spot of our beloved team and how will the Genuis AJ fix it???

Cindy wrote on Mar 8, 2008 12:08 PM:I wish Michael all the luck, of course it will be hard to see another good X Charger make it big for another team. In retrospect all the hard decisions by AJ have pretty much been good ones, but of course at the time I was yelling and screaming like the rest. I was a wee one if 10 during the Air Coryell days, but I do remember the excitement of watching the team score, but is those days we lacked the defense we have now. I am glad to see we have that same excitement back in the team and I hope to see the team win it all in the next few years. Go Chargers!!
