SAN MARCOS -- A convicted sex offender was arrested Friday night after fleeing police and was found with a 16-year-old girl in his car, sheriff's Sgt. Kelly Stuart said.

The man, Lawrence Todd Bartee of Oceanside, was convicted in 1999 on suspicion of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under age 14. As part of his parole, he was forbidden from associating with anyone under age 18, Stuart said.

Bartee fled when pursued by deputies, eventually leading them on a short chase and failing to stop at several stop signs, Stuart said. He eventually was stopped on Highway 78 just west of Sycamore, Stuart said. He initially provided officers a false name, she said.

He was arrested by Deputy Victorino David on suspicion of violating his parole and later booked into Vista Jail, Stuart said.

Peoples Republic of California wrote on Mar 15, 2008 2:08 PM:why does California place a higher value on the rights of the convicted sex offender (who is out of jail because???) than on the rights of the 16 year old child? how 'progressive' is that?
