Feller drops Oceanside mayoral campaign to seek council re-election
By: North County Times | ∞
OCEANSIDE ---- Councilman Jack Feller said Friday he has abandoned his mayoral campaign and will work instead to retain his Oceanside City Council seat in November.
Feller, who announced nearly one year ago that he would challenge Mayor Jim Wood for his seat, told reporters that he had decided to change course.
"While becoming mayor of Oceanside is a goal I feel is very attainable, I must consider the time commitment involved in doing so, which means less time addressing the issues facing our city," Feller said, reading from a prepared statement.
Thus far, Wood is the only other person to have filed papers with the city clerk's office declaring his intent to run for mayor. The nomination period opens July 14.

Yipee! wrote on Mar 14, 2008 1:32 PM:Jack finally figured out he could never win the Mayor's spot. Guess all those expensive polls he paid for finally hit him over the head and said he'd lose. Running for council seat isn't a sure thing anymore either, Jack. You have turned against the communities that you are sworn to represent and they are angry! Vote for the concrete plant are you are going lose.

We already have two teachers and he will make three! Not much money in the teaching profession right now! The current two can't figure out what is going on and don't read Staff Reports before the meetings. Maybe they can't read. They should be giving Jack speech lessons.

Old Timer wrote on Mar 14, 2008 8:58 PM:I am glad that Mr. Feller decided to work with the Mayor instead of against him all the time. Mayor Wood has been a good Mayor and has really become very adept at getting things done. I hope Mr. Chavez, Mr. Kern and Miss Sanchez will see that working together is better for the city.
I support Jack Feller; wrote on Mar 14, 2008 11:36 PM:Jack Feller may not be running for Mayor but he still has my support. He is conscientious, a good family man and cares about this community. Those whose nastiness is displayed for all to see on this page are the reason Oceanside is so divisive. It is the nastiness that drives a wedge in this community and it is not difficult to see where that comes from. This community is better for having Jack Feller represent them.

Dosen't look good if your planning to run in a bigger arena. All I know is that we have to take the power back and put it with councilmembers that care about your neighborhoods and your quality of life .NOT OUTSIDE SPECIAL INTERESTS.Big Money that Buys Elections.
Take your own advice Ms. Sanchez: wrote on Mar 15, 2008 6:18 AM:"As long as I've known council member Feller, he has felt he was entitled to be mayor. ... He probably realized he couldn't win," Sanchez said in a phone interview Friday afternoon. I wonder when Ms. Sanchez will bow out?
Right wrote on Mar 15, 2008 7:00 AM:Drive down Oceanside Blvd without hitting a pothole. Jack wants Robertson's which will add 250 concrete trucks per day on Oceanside Blvd. Robertson's is only estimated to produce $200k in annual revenue. That will not pay for 1/4 of the damage caused by the trucks. This is not good business for Oceanside. Bring in a better business. This is not about losing industry street. This is about bringing in businesses along the industry/Oceanside corridor that will create more jobs, more revenue for the city and not cause further destruction.
Jack will vote and the citizens will remember.

Terri wrote on Mar 15, 2008 8:24 AM:Development friendly is the problem. If Jack had his way there would be a gas station on every corner as well as a high rise hotel. It's time for term limits in Oceanside. We've had enough of "build it they will come" Feller!

Wrong, wrong, wrong wrote on Mar 15, 2008 9:29 AM:Jack says he is for a pro-development council. Wake up folks! That means they will build anything, anywhere in town without any regard for the wishes of the residents. And his little hint about a 5/0 council? The devlopers have bought 3 of the council off. Don't reelect this guy. It's bad for our citizens!
Coast Watcher wrote on Mar 15, 2008 9:32 AM:The only property rights Jack believes in are the rights of developers. Sorry, Jack, but we residents have property rights too. The right to enjoy our property without undue noise, lights, traffic, and pollution. Get real. You're just a developer's friend and no friend to your own constituents.
RJC wrote on Mar 15, 2008 9:37 AM:I'm sure this was a tough decision for Jack. He is clearly the best candidate for Mayor, but the risk of losing the majority on the council is just too great. ... Sanchez will be out, the council will maintain its conservative majority, thanks to Feller's decision, and Wood will still be an irrelevant mayor.

Oh yeah, we will still be able to do that! And any noise he makes about "working" with the mayor is all hogwash! He tells everyone what he thinks of Jim, and its not very pretty. These three feel that they run the city council, not Jim, and they want to continue running the city council from OUTSIDE the mayor's office. Jim has played it off well, but he also can't stand these guys. Time for a change! Time to get support for Wood and Sanchez, who really care about our city and our neighborhoos!

Being part of the labor movement means a commitment to the community you serve. Seems like the bashing of Jack is about truly working for the whole community and not just 2 groups. Jack has made many more good moves than bad. Can you say that for the others? I support you (Jack) in this election and if I disagree with you, I have the integrity to call you and discuss it. At least you are willing to sit with me and talk.

OC Residents Home wrote on Mar 15, 2008 9:00 PM:As far as I can see and hear, the residents are not happy one way or the other. The city representatives are suppost to work in the best interests of the residents and the city they live, work and play in. Seems like the city does not listen to what the residents want, and the city reps slip on working as a team to accomplish what is right for the residents & the city as a whole. Look to make change for the people first. An eye for eye makes the city blind. Things are going to change very fast, and the people are speaking up! I LOVE OC.

Where is the care for the locals..And LETS DEVELOPE WITH THE NEW TECHNOLOGY OF BUILDING "GREEN" Sustainable buildings....time to change the city building codes to REQUIRE AT LEAST ONE ASPECT FOR THE "GREEN" BUILD...COUNCIL PEOPLE STOP POLLUTING OUR CITY...PLEASE

Sorry don't know who Shari Mackin is, and not affiliated with any groups ...just a resident who is not blind to how the city representatives look past the best quality interest of the OC residents...shoot...doesn't take a rocket scientist to look around and know the city is going down hill fast. PS, I haven't been here to long to see...I mean come on we don't live in the dang 50's anymore...times have changed, and our city is suffering from the prosperous city it could be if Councilmembers were not so greedy-needy for the WRONG SORT OF DEVELOPEMENT....I am sure to say OC residents would like to take pride in a city that can build As green as possible, and enjoy a REAL COASTAL CITY not a sales car parking lot, or a Way Overdone City Hall, but let the rest of the city suffer...??? Sorry why don't you give the residents of OC a break!
Mensa wrote on Mar 16, 2008 1:44 AM:Feller’s decision proves, once again, he has the courage to act in the best interest of Oceanside. He is big enough to put his ego aside to do the right thing for the City. Mayor Wood is doing a good job and deserves to be reelected. Ester Sanchez needs to go for reasons too numerous to list. We need someone new to bring intelligence, dignity, and professionalism to the Council who can work with Mayor Wood and Jack Feller.

Bill wrote on Mar 29, 2008 9:57 AM:Feller clearly realizes he is in danger of losing his seat. There is a growing realization that he "must go". I certainly will not support him. I feel he is an embarassment. His stance on property rights is dangerous because he does not pursue smart, intelligent growth. He lacks sophistication and creativity in his thinking and is little more than a pawn for business interests.
