SAN DIEGO -- The city's annual St. Patrick's Day celebration begins Saturday with a parade and festival in San Diego's Balboa Park.
The 28th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday on Sixth Avenue, from Upas Street to Laurel Street.
Mayor Jerry Sanders will be the grand marshal. High school marching bands, floats, cars and an equestrian group will also be part of the procession.
While St. Patrick's Day is not technically until Monday, tens of thousands of people are expected to jam into Balboa Park Saturday for a festival to mark the holiday that pays tribute to the patron saint of Ireland.
The free festival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. along the west side of Balboa Park, includes Irish music, dancing, a mock Celtic Village, children's zone, food, crafts and beer gardens.
On Monday, more than 40,000-square-feet of Astroturf will transform downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter into a sea of green for the start of the 13th annual "ShamRock" St. Patrick's Day party.
The festival, which features two entertainment stages and beer gardens, runs from 4 p.m. until midnight Monday on F Street, between Fifth and Seventh avenues, and Sixth Avenue, between F and G streets.
