Medical heroes honored in 'Fighting for Life'
By DAN BENNETT - Staff Writer | ∞
Among the less-often discussed elements of the ongoing war in Iraq is the courage and proficiency of the medical teams helping wounded U.S. military personnel.
"Fighting for Life" looks at things from three different perspectives: the ongoing training at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Md., where doctors, nurses and other professionals learn how to tend to those wounded in war; the emergency units and the people who work in them in the center of Iraq; and the wounded men and women who are treated by these medical professionals and who must now look for ways to put their shattered lives and bodies back together.
Using hand-held high-def cameras, the "Fighting for Life" documentary team enjoyed upfront access to these proceedings, using footage of actual surgeries and life-saving techniques, and also explanatory and emotional interviews with the medical professionals and the wounded.
The result is a just-the-facts documentary that celebrates the courage involved in wartime medicine and the heroic professionals who do their best under some of the most trying conditions imaginable.
