Murrieta man arrested after high-speed chase

A man led police on a chase this morning, topping speeds of 100 mph, from Murrieta to the Pechanga Resort & Casino, where he was arrested after a short standoff in a maintenance building, authorities said.

The chase started around 11 a.m. near Winchester and Murrieta Hot Springs roads when a Murrieta police officer spotted a white Infiniti sedan registered to Kevin Dale Powell, 48, authorities said.

Police had been looking for Powell for several days after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest, authorities said. When officers tried to pull the driver over, he refused to stop.

After speeding through parts of French Valley, the Infiniti headed back onto Winchester Road. With speeds reaching at least 115 mph and the driver making risky maneuvers around other cars on the road, pursuing patrol cars dropped back and a Riverside County sheriff's helicopter kept an eye on the car from overhead.

The helicopter followed the car as it sped onto southbound Interstate 15, heading into San Diego County and then coming back north, ultimately ending up at Pechanga Resort & Casino. The car entered a parking structure at the resort and the deputy in the helicopter saw the driver enter a building that is not attached to the casino or hotel, police said.

Pechanga security officers kept people away from the area as dozens of sheriff's deputies and officers with the Murrieta Police Department and California Highway Patrol surrounded the building. Police said they believed the man might have had a gun.

The man emerged a short while later and sheriff's deputies forced him to the ground and arrested him.

Since the safety of the public is at stake the police did the right thing in putting the maximum amount of their resources on the situation. After all the are protecting me, you and our children. The minor stuff can just wait.

Really... wrote on Mar 27, 2008 5:47 AM:Gregory, One of the choppers was a news chopper. Were you really there? Because it didn't look like overkill to me, or in the San Diego TV news.

Good job to Murrieta PD, and RSO. But what I would really like to know, given how Law Enforcement and the DA's office have to get approval from one judge to hold someone without bail, who was the other judge who overide the first judge's decision and reduced his bail? Was this judge a former defense attorney, or just falling asleep at the bench. Or maybe it was the same judge who thinks DUI murderes should be let off with probation!

Yes I am Serious wrote on Mar 27, 2008 7:51 AM:Who said TPD was involved? I see the article writes about deputies, MURRIETA PD and CHP. But NOT TPD. They were busy writing tickets to school kids crossing the street at Chaparral.

way to go! wrote on Mar 27, 2008 12:06 PM:What is amazing is that with all the police agencies involved, reckless driving by the lovely Mr. Powell and time of day, NO ONE GOT INJURED (Except Mr Powell, who got bit by a police canine!). Not one accident as a result of the pursuit, all officers went home safe and the bad guy is in custody-Great Job to all involved!

Mounty Mentality wrote on Mar 27, 2008 1:35 PM:I see a warrant was issued, there was no mention of the cause for the warrant.Do we all need to be reminded of Temeculas history of high speed cases? Gentlemen Start Your Engines!Rationalized Stupidity! Where is he going to hide with a helicopter following?

Ed wrote on Mar 27, 2008 1:54 PM:This is where the policies of police departments need to be changed. When a man points a gun at another man, he is presenting deadly force and deadly force can be used to stop him. When a man is driving his deadly weapon at a 100mph and about to kill the public at large, then the police need to use deadly force. Chasing them around, putting everyone else in danger is rediculous when all it would take is a couple of shotgun blasts throught the driver's side window to stop this potential muderer.

Serious? wrote on Mar 27, 2008 5:08 PM:Riverside Sheriff Deputies are TPD. Temecula contracts law enforcement through RSO. It's always been that way here. How many times do we have to go over this.

And no, the second helicopter was a news chopper. I can deduct that fact by the TV news from San Diego in which there was video footage from above. Or maybe it was from a satelite.

Not happy with RSO giving you that crosswalk ticket, huh? Hee Hee.

Friend wrote on Mar 28, 2008 11:38 PM:Easy for all of you to sit here and judge this man without knowing any of the circumstances surrounding the situation. But if it makes you all feel like big men tearing someone else down then I guess go for it.
