NORTH COUNTY ---- A dozen North County elementary schools have been named 2008 California Distinguished Schools, the state's Department of Education announced Wednesday.
The campuses included Hope and Kelly in Carlsbad Unified; Carpi and Flora Vista in Encinitas Union; Bernardo in Escondido Union; Christa McAuliffe, South Oceanside and Stuart Mesa in Oceanside Unified; Knob Hill and Richland in San Marcos Unified; and Valley Center Elementary Upper School and Valley Center Primary School in the Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District.
More than two dozen campuses in the county and 343 public elementary schools statewide were chosen for the honor, designed to identify the state's most exemplary and inspiring public schools.
"These outstanding elementary schools represent many different kinds of communities, organizational structures and student populations," state schools Superintendent Jack O'Connell said, adding that many of the schools have overcome "significant educational challenges" to be named the "best of the best."
The state education department bestows the award based on detailed applications and site visits where teams of local educators evaluate curriculum, staff training, student support and community.
