Letters for Thursday, April 10, 2008

We're going to have to do better this time

I first began muttering “God damn America” back in the 1960s. Every day, it seemed, we were dropping more and more bombs on the long-suffering Vietnamese people. It was like we were trying to win their hearts and minds by sending soldiers like John McCain to kill as many of them as we could.

About the same time, I noticed hate and racism all around me and began to let go a few more hearty curses on America. I quit cursing America after Vietnam and Watergate, because I had faith in Jimmy Carter doing the right thing. Then Ronald Reagan decided it was in our national security interest to kill peasants in Central America. Let's hear another curse for Reagan. G.W. Bush has been making me livid with curses for going on almost eight years.

If we desire no one to say “God damn America” anymore, we are going to have to do better with our next choice for a leader. Maybe someone who is not a war-monger. Maybe someone who agrees that killing people in the name of freedom is obvious insanity.

Obama doesn't take advice from the Rev. Wright

In response to one Keith Manigold (Letters, April 7): Barack has not taken and never did take political advice from his black former minister. His attack on Obama is truly [wrong]. Remember Jerry Falwell and other white ministers who said the 9/11 attacks were God's punishment for the moral decay in this country, including the gay lifestyle? Other ministers made similar accusations. Did he agree with these attacks on America?

As for Clinton, she really supported NAFTA, as proven by her being at meetings supporting NAFTA. She did support Bush in voting against the 2003 Levin amendment that would have sent inspectors back into Iraq to search for WMDs that never existed. And she did not run for cover in Bosnia, as video showed to be false.

By the way, Barack is Scotch-Irish on his mother's side, as her great-grandfather came from Ireland. Barack is not racist. ...

Use roving patrols to catch drunken drivers

Sheriffs in Solana Beach spent a lot of officers' time and taxpayers' money Saturday to arrest three drunken drivers out of more than 379 cars stopped and inconvenienced at a DUI checkpoint ("Three arrested at DUI checkpoint," April 6). That is a meager 0.79 percent success rate.

In the fight to get drunken drivers off the roads, California law enforcement agencies would likely make far more arrests if they spent their available patrol time roaming the streets looking for drunken drivers, rather than standing at roadblocks waiting for these drivers to come to them.

Because they are highly visible by design and publicized in advance, roadblocks are all too easily avoided by the chronic alcohol abusers, who compose the core of today's drunken driving problem. Conversely, the number of DUI arrests made by roving patrol programs is nearly 10 times the average number of DUIs made by checkpoint programs, according to testimony by a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation official.

Solana Beach residents and taxpayers would benefit from employing the most effective tactics to catch drunken drivers: roving police patrols.

Idea that Iraq does matter is hogwash

Gwynne Dyer's column ("Sadr faces down, beats Iraq's Maliki," April 6) continues his theme that what we do in Iraq doesn't matter. Hogwash. However one feels about whether we should have gotten ourselves into Iraq (I, for one, was skeptical), the idea that it doesn't matter how we get out is ludicrous. Nations in the Middle East already fear we are an incompetent, and worse, inconsistent ally. If we precipitously withdraw (the apparent intent of his "it doesn't matter" theme), our friends there will become less friendly and our enemies will be emboldened.

The Middle East is a region where everything is connected. So war with Iran would become more, not less, likely, and peace hopes in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict would be dimmed. Imagine leaders in Pakistan (where bin Laden is thought to be) reviewing cooperation with us in the war on terror after we discard our partners in Iraq –– let alone the conclusions the Taliban will draw.

Let's not have another Vietnam where we pretend there are no consequences to deserting an ally on the battlefield.

Serious errors in reporting

Sunday's edition of the North County Times had a copied story from the Associated Press that contained serious errors about the situation in Tibet and China's involvement in the Olympics. ...

The article "Protesters rally before Olympic torch's arrival in San Francisco," April 6, refers to "China's alleged torture and imprisonment of religious and political dissidents." There are no "alleged" tortures or imprisonments. ... China does torture, imprison and kill not only to Tibetans, but countless numbers of people who speak up for the truth and religious freedom. Many Chinese products sold in America are made by their prisoner-slaves. This false impression of China's behavior is a serious error on your part.

And to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and any others who say the Olympics is not about politics, you are sadly mistaken. The Olympics was given to China specifically to force them to improve their human rights policies and to allow free access to China by the world's media. If that's not political, I don't know what is. China has not lived up to these strings that were attached to being awarded the Olympics. Let the torch protests continue.

Consulate oversteps its duties

I read the article on the Internet "New Mexican consul general gets mixed reception," April 7. Why doesn't the Mexican government put as much effort into helping the people in Mexico as they do in the U.S.? A consulate is on U.S. soil so that a foreign government can conduct business. Consulates should not be opening centers in our American towns and cities! They should conduct all business at their consulate. Period!

There are 10 Mexican Consulates in California: Calexico, Fresno, Los Angeles, Oxnard, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Santa Ana. All consulate business should be transacted at the above consulates, not at public schools or private sites.

The State Department should inform all Mexican Consulates that if they operate outside of the consulate building, they will be expelled from the U.S. I wish the consul of San Diego would put the passion she puts into her job on U.S. soil into her home country –– that is, I wish she would help the people in Mexico!

Lesson not learned

Does anyone remember the tirades of Khrushchev during his shoe-pounding at the U.N.? Many who remember that only remember him saying, "We will bury the West." However, his full remark, I believe, included: "with your own economic system." Was he correct?

This move is unbelievable

The Public Utilities Commission intends to split the 760 telephone area code ("Doing the (area code) split," April 5). The eastern, less-populated area gets to keep the number while the heavier, more-densely populated western half gets a new number. Unbelievable! Just what qualifications besides being stupid does one need to be a member of this distinguished board?

Be careful what you wish for

Peggy Sloan (Letters, April 5) should be careful what she wishes for. Granted, the economy is having a period of turmoil at this time because of the aftereffects of the subprime home mortgages written a few years ago. A primary flaw in the housing mortgage mess (for which Congress needs to pass corrective legislation) is that lenders could write risky mortgages ... and then sell them to third parties, where they were packaged and sold to investors. The lenders were off the hook.

There needs to be a provision that holds them accountable in case of defaults so they will be more careful in their mortgage origination policies.

Both Clinton and Obama have pledged they will increase taxes and restrict free trade (pandering to unions). Both are issues that will negatively affect the economy. Economists generally recognize that free trade is beneficial despite localized dislocations. And there are numerous examples ... that tax cuts help the economy and tax increases have a depressing effect. Taxes that affect investment are particularly destructive. So we need to think long and hard before we elect someone who will make bad matters worse.

False fence of security

While everyone was sleeping, the government in Washington, D.C., has taken a few liberties with our liberties. One example is outlined in the recent article explaining how the Homeland Security Department will override more than 30 existing laws to build another 267 miles of border fence ("Feds: Administration will waive rules to build more border fence," April 2). Homeland Security bosses cite their ability to override any laws in the name of national security. I expect this also means that they think that our Bill of Rights can be overridden at their whim.

The argument that Homeland Security is building the fence for national security reasons isn't new, but it isn't correct either. The fence on our Southern border has nothing to do with National Security, because virtually anyone can go over it, or under it, or around it if they really try. Therefore, what Homeland Security is doing is wholly unconstitutional, in my view, because their argument that it protects us will never hold water.

Instead the move has everything to do with politics, and making the GOP base feel that they are being protected. How sad that all these "patriotic Americans" are willing to sacrifice our laws and liberties to feel good behind a false fence of security.

An enlightening episode

Recently, I had a very enlightening experience when I was fortunate enough to be able to watch both episodes of a PBS "Frontline" documentary titled "Bush's War." Almost everyone involved in the major decisions regarding Iraq was interviewed, including Vice President Cheney.

I urge anyone who did not see the two-part series and who really cares about our country and would like to know the truth and facts about how we got involved over there and the subsequent occupation to call (800) 752-9727 and order the two-part DVD.

Wrong-headed attack on VA

As a disabled American veteran and a former VA employee, I must question the purpose of your eye-catching April 7 front-page headline about the supposedly horrific criminal frivolous spending that catches the eye of the investigators ("VA employees rack up $2.6 billion in credit card charges for veterans care"). Then, in just the fourth paragraph, the article states, "By and large, it (the AP investigation) reveals few outward signs of questionable spending." The article then points at an $8,000 total expenditure out of a $2.6 billion total as an example of the terrible behaviors of people who are truly trying their best to serve American veterans?

Methinks you needed a headline. Or, possibly, since some of our presidential candidates are talking about universal health care, it's time again to attack the VA system, a working model.

I saw it happen during the Reagan years when a well-working system, a possible model for universal health care, was attacked, then put under the direct control (thumb) of the administration by creating a VA secretary's office at the administrative level. The VA isn't perfect, but it deserves better.

True facts about Vietnam

Eisenhower sent a few advisers for aid under SEATO (Southeast Asian Treaty Organization); he never sent arms or military troops in any form to Vietnam. On Dec. 11, 1961, Kennedy altered the policy of just limiting a few advisors for aid to South Vietnam. Kennedy sent direct military support in the form of two U.S. Army helicopter units and 685 military advisers. ... [In 19]57, Eisenhower signed the first Civil Rights Bill in 87 years. The bill was primarily to assure voting rights to all Americans. Prior to the Civil Rights Bill, laws were made so that blacks could sit anywhere they would like to on a bus and universities had to enroll blacks.

Again in 1960, Eisenhower signed a Civil Rights Act that attempted to overcome some of the shortcomings of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. The new law had a provision permitting federal judges to send referees to supervise voter registration in areas of apparent racial discrimination.

Obama followers must be blind

In the movie "Divorce, American Style," there's a scene where Joey Bishop's wife comes home and finds him in bed with a blonde. She goes ballistic and Joey says, "Calm down! A blonde? What blonde? I don't see a blonde." Neither do Obama's followers. They don't want to see Obama agreeing with his mentor and spiritual guide when Farrakhan's champion spouts off. Obama also nods again when this embarrassment to the religious leaders of all faiths attacks this country with outrageous lies. Oh, excuse me, he wasn't there at those times.

Obama would have us believe that the pastor called and said "Barack, don't come this Sunday or next Sunday because I am going to honor Farrakhan, and next time, I am going to abuse the First Amendment and accuse the U.S. with outrageous statements and lies."

Mr. Obama, under oath, have you met Farrakhan, lunched with him, taken a picture with him? His answer, probably: "Blonde? What blonde?" How could anyone vote for this ... fabricator? A master of smoke and mirrors. ...

He has basically said the same thing in his letters of 3/1, 3/15, 3/28 and 4/10.
Wait! For those conservatives who complained about liberal letters being printed more often than once every two weeks, this is 4 letters in exactly 40 calendar days! Yes, I do understand that there might be some variance between submissions and the dates printed, which the writer has no control over.
But four letters in 40 days? It does not average out.
Obviously the North County Times' bias is against the Obama people, as Epstein is allowed to just repeat, over and over again, accusations against Obama that amount to nothing more than trying to hold him responsible for what someone else said, which he denounced, while giving a free pass to McCain who sought out for political support bigots who basically made the same anti-American statements about 9/11, but blaming gays and feminists rather than the mistreatment of minorities.
Again, all Epstein and his Republican cronies have is name-calling and accusations of guilt by association (plus help from a free pass by the NCT).

sdraoul wrote on Apr 9, 2008 10:29 PM:Two days ago, a poster named “the Virginian” responded to my note that the American Civil War was fought for a number of freedoms. Certainly the most prominent reason was to stamp out slavery. “The Virginian” posted that it wasn’t a civil war, rather it was “the war between the states.” He stated that the war was fought over States’ rights not slavery.

My response is that “the Virginian” should attend school, for whatever he thought he was getting in Virginia, it wasn’t an education.

Only the losers call the American Civil War the “war between the states” – notice I don’t even capitalize his words. The war was started when several states attempted to breakaway from the United States of America after Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States on an anti-slavery platform in 1860.

Moreover, anyone who says the war wasn’t over slavery must not have read Lincoln’s famous “half-free, half slave” speech – IN 1858, two years before he was elected President.

The traitors waged war on the USA when they bombarded a federal fort.

As for the “Emancipation Proclamation” only applying to territory the Federals controlled, perhaps the “Virginian” isn’t aware that the Army of Northern Virginia (28,000 weak and being pummeled by General Phil Sheridan’s superior Union Cavalry) that was commanded by Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9th.

Federal troops occupied all the breakaway South, thus the Proclamation applied to every inch of what was formerly the “Confederate States of America,” a nation that never existed.

Lastly, the United States Supreme Court ruled in 1870 that no state has the right to breakaway or secede from the USA. The Constitution outlines how a state can come into being but not how to leave once it is part of the USA, the court ruled. What part of illegal doesn’t the “Virginian” understand?

Daniel Lynch's gratuitous assertions about Obama are silly for Obama himself can't claim innocence after sitting in Pastor Wright's that he doesn't believe Wright's haterd of America for himself. He proved his view of America by not serving one minute in the American military even though a commission would have been his for the asking.

As for Ms Hvidson, she should know that if her policy of keeping Consuls in their offices only, the American Counsul in Great Britain could not visit British jails to look for Americans that need help, or in French, German, Norwegian, Swedish, South African, Danish, Canadian or Austrian jails.

to GW 2-9-08 5:22pm wrote on Apr 10, 2008 6:26 AM:Deer Springs Fire Board is Dysfunctional

The points posted are facts.

Seems that the word "learned people" confused GW. Was not indicating
that I am learned, just noted there are people in the District communities who understood the math (actual tax would have been 24% not 33%), and also people who understand the importance of continuing, extending, and improving emergency response protection for
our lives and our homes.

Points below are based on current info:
There is a current bad real estate market.
The District communities are in the highest wildfire danger zone.
Fuel (vegetation that will burn) is everywhere in the District.
Fire season is year round.

The Fire Board had an opportunity to make the Deer Springs Fire District
safer and stronger re medical services (cardiac arrest, etc.) and fire services.

New fire engine equipment is expensive.
2003 fires were bad.
2007 fires were extremely bad.
The Fire District must be better prepared.

After attending 18 meetings, I am well informed about the Board meetings. The meetings are Dysfunctional and Worse.

The Fire Chief at DSFPD is the fire professional. Not the board.

The current Board does not believe that Rancho Santa Fe five shelter-in-place
communities is 'real' and has been 'tested'. It was tested by the 2007 fires. No homes were lost or damaged in the 5 sip communities. No lives were lost (some people actually stayed in their sip homes). The Board is unable to think clearly and accept new ideas, new tools, etc. Dysfunctional.

The Board censured the same board person 2 times (legally must post and it was
posted both times in the NCTimes). A third censure was submitted. This is dysfunctional.

Another Board member took 8 months to find the info needed (Board expense spending info) which was in the person's Board packet at every monthly meeting. This is dysfunctional.

2 current Board members and GW and the loud uneducated small audience constantly complained about the Board when it did the right things to improve the District fire protection such as building Firehouse #3 in Hidden Meadows.

Thank you to the previous Asaro Fire Board for the new Hidden Meadows Firehouse. Asaro Board (which lasted until Dec. 2006) started Firehouse #3 and it was finished with 3 "YES" legal votes from an early 2007 regular board meeting.

The Asaro Board understood the District communities needs and therefore was a functional board. The Asaro Board knew the issues were to improve health and fire safety for the current District residents.

3 Asaro Board Directors did not live in Hidden Meadows but knew an additional firehouse was needed for the 11000-12000 District residents, especially in Hidden Meadows.
The Asaro Board concentrated on improving the District communities fire and health services.

The Asaro Board looked to the future, and therefore the public voted (2004) for the Board to increase the tax as necessary in the future. The future is now (2008). It was up to the current Board to pass the tax by not being swayed by GW and the loud uneducated small audience. QUOTE NCTimes 04-04-08 Moss "About a dozen property owners were on hand ..." END QUOTE

The current Board voted but they did not consider the 11000-12000 residents in the District communities. The Board capitulated to the loud uneducated audience (their friends). That is dysfunctional.

A true leader does not abstain on the only issues of the Board which is health and fire safety. The President abstained. She has her personal goals; Sacramento and then the White House. Dysfunctional leadership.

Our current board, GW and the loud uneducated small audience cannot comprehend the facts that they are going backwards. They don't focus on the important issues of health and fire safety. They consider that Firehouse #3 was QUOTE a "... boondoggle." END QUOTE. NCTimes 4-9-08 5:22pm.

Nixing the taxes means a health and fire safety opportunity was missed. Seemingly the Board forget about the 2003 and 2007 fires and the 11000-12000 residents. The Board is Dysfunctional.

It was also stated that slavery was a political issue for decades prior to the Civil War but did not become an issue until during the war when Lincoln freed slaves within the jurisdiction of the federal army. I am well aware of Civl War and in particular Virginia. I am also aware that the proclamation eventually effected all the territory of the former Confederate States of America as the federal army occupied all of that army. Merriam Mountains will have lots of concrete (streets and many driveways), will have homes built with fire resistant materials, will have concrete block walls for protection, as well as fire resistant plantings. And much more protection. There will be rules that all residents must follow. Much like the rules at Rancho Santa Fe 5 SIP communities.

There will be less fuel therefore less fire.

Therefore MMtns. will no longer be a threat; not a condition 1 fire scenario. This info is from many Fire Chiefs and other fire-related professionals that study fires including the Federal Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory Missoula MT and the Rocky Mountain Center (RMC) Fort Collins CO, and universities in almost every US state.

The County Sups & DPLU & developers are going to continue building. They will be using SIP as much as they can because they can build more dwelling units (du) that way. And expect developers will be able to build on difficult land (rocky mountains) with SIP.

Evacuation won't be needed or used as much in the SIP communities.

Each du means taxes; money for the county treasure chests.

Must make our current District better fire wise and health wise. Merriam Mountains is already a winner fire wise and health wise.

As for my defense of people fighting for freedom while being against the Confederate States of America--is that a serious question?

The Confederacy was not fighting for freedom, they were fighting for slavery and white supremacy.

As for the North fighting for agriculture and the South agaisnt industrialization, bull. The South grew cotton which it sent to England.

As for states' rights, fine. Except when those "rights" are counter to freedom and the pursuit of "life, liberty and property." The rub is, the South thought that people were property if they were African.

In the case of the Supreme Court, Texas tried to redeeem bonds sold by it during the Civil War because it claimed it had a right to break away from the USA, Virginian, and the Supreme Court said no, no state could break away--ever unless the Cosntitution was changed to allow it.

Also, the Court ruled against Texas because it tried to deny citizenship to Mexicans who were there in 1848 or were born there since 1848 because, it claimed, Mexicans were not white as required by immigration law for citizenship in 1848.

The Court said, bull, citizenship was conferred to any Mexican present in Texas in 1848 by treaty and that treaties had the force of the Constitution. A real important case that Texas thought they could actually win in spite of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Cosntitution that were approved between 1866 and 1868.

The fact that Congress found the need to submit the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the southern States for Ratification and found the need to send its Military into those States to obtain a Ratification Vote to its liking is an admission by the Congress of 1867 that the southern States were “States” of the Union of the United States of America before, during, and after the Civil War.
If the U.S. Congress has the authority to send Military Troops into the freely associated compact States of the united States of America to obtain “Votes of Ratification” on any Amendment to its liking; then why would there be a need for Constitutional Amendment procedures. For the Legislators of the States to allow the 14th and the 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution to stand “Ratified;” the members would be declaring to the World that they represent a “defacto” government in which the Congress of the United States has been empowered to exercising absolute “dictatorial powers” over the People and the States of the united States of America.
As I have said in the past, The U.S. Constitution, 14th Amendment was not ratified in accordance to the provisions of the Constitution for the United States of America and as such, it does not exist. It survives as a matter of fraud and deception.
All of these so-claimed history experts need to do a little more digging.

I stated that slavery was a political issue prior to the civil war. It became a real issue during the civil war with Emancipation Proclamation whose writ was valid in areas occupied by the federal army. The issue of the industrial north over the southern agriculture is valid. It has nothing to do with products. It has to do with population and larger representation in Congress. Man, got a brain. Can't you add it up. Again what does the 1870 Supreme Court decesion have to do with an accomplished fact. I do not care about the Mexican issue. It has nothing to do with the American Civil War. The South was fighting for states rights and its way of life and yes those who owned slaves wanted to continue slavery. The vast majority of southerns did not own or have slaves. You think all those Rebs in the ranks of the southern armies had slaves. Then, you have a crazy imagination. You show me the canidate who sat in Falwell's pew for more than 20 years, wrote a book about it, claimed Falwell was their "spiritual mentor", or claimed Falwell "shaped their life." Ron wrote on Apr 10, 2008 10:00 AM:I don't know about the errors in reporting. I think most times, these so-called "journalists" write more opinion pieces, than actual facts. And I could really care less about the Olympic torch stories.
But what I do find fascinating are the liberal responses to China.
You know... in my history book, I can readily recall a time in this country, 1996 to be exact, when the number of murderous chinese officials visitng this country simply did not matter to most liberals. There were no Protesters rallying in San Francisco, or anywhere, for that matter. No talk of China's alleged torture and imprisonment of religious and political dissidents.
So, what were we all talking about back in 1996? The 1996 United States campaign finance controversy and the Clinton Administration. Really not a "controversy", the investigations into fund-raising activities had uncovered evidence that agents of China directed political contributions from foreign sources into the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
Did this upset liberals? Oh No! It was a right-wing conspiracy, aimed to discredit the Clinton Administration. Twenty-two people were eventually convicted for fraud or for funneling Asian funds into the United States elections. A number of these convictions came against "longtime" Clinton-Gore "friends." Again, did any of this disturb any liberals? Oh No! It was just the vast right-wing conspiracy at work.
Then we had the illegal contribution of some $460,000 by Yah Lin "Charlie" Trie to President Bill Clinton's legal defense fund. A FOB, Friend of Bill since 1974. "Charlie" Trie had known the then Governor Clinton from his
Little Rock, Arkansas days.
Trie introduced Wang Jun, chairman of CITIC, the chief investment arm of the PRC {People's Republic of China},
and Poly Technologies, a "front company for the PRC military", that was later charged with smuggling 2,000 AK-47s into the U.S., to a White House "coffee" with then President Bill Clinton. Any lib's upset over that?
Naw, it was all the right-wing conspiracy at work!
Four days prior to Wang Jun's White House visit, the Clinton Administration granted Poly Technologies {the Chinese front company} import permits that would allow the shipment of over 100,000 semi-automatic weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition to a Detroit company (China Jiang An) that had ties to the Chinese military.
Gun control, anyone? LOL
And we all know the rest of the story, don't we? A close business associate of Ron Brown testified in court in 1998 that Brown had told her that Commerce Department trade missions were used for partisan political fund-raising at the behest of President Clinton and the First Lady. Johnny Chung, Liu Chaoying and General Ji, and forty-nine separate visits to the White House between February 1994 and February 1996. Then there was John Huang, James Riady and the Lippo Group, key fund-raisers within the DNC raised $3.4 million for the party.
Any lib's upset then? Nope!
So, you see... what this goes to show one thing, and one thing only. Lib's are lib's first, and everything else comes second.

As for our "allies" in the war on terror in the region, you might notice that Maliki, "our guy" in Iraq, is already quite allied with Iran. You might also notice that "our guy" in Pakistan has been politically trounced by his people, and the real Al Qaeda and the Taliban are growing in strength there daily. Being an ally of George Bush has been the kiss of death for the leadership of Pakistan, Britain, Italy, Spain, and Australia (among others).
