FALLBROOK: One injured in shooting

By North County Times | Saturday, April 12, 2008 5:50 PM PDT

FALLBROOK ---- A shooting was reported Friday at 6:20 p.m. in front of a Carl's Jr. restaurant at 1137 S. Mission Road. According to Detective Jeff Lauhon of the Fallbrook Sheriff's Station, at least three men got into a fight in which witnesses say a baseball bat was used as a weapon. At some point, a man was shot in the head, and the shooter fled on foot, according to police. The victim is a 16-year-old Fallbrook resident, Fallbrook sheriff's Sgt. Theresa Hydar said. A good Samaritan drove the teen to Fallbrook Hospital, and he was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center, where he is in critical condition, Hydar said.

At least 10 deputies and detectives responded to the scene. No description of the shooting suspect was available and Lauhon said a motive for the shooting had not been determined.

WHEN I CALL SHERIFF DEPARTMENT THEY SAY THEY WILL SEND SOMEONE BUT NOBODY EVER SHOWS UP ON TIME OR AT ALL.

Drive by a restaurant and there are 4 sheriff's vehicles parked out front but if you call because your neighbor's dog is attacking your livestock, they stand there and watch. I think they just don't feel like filling out the paperwork so they don't respond.

Why cant they just snap out of it and realize that when they shoot or beat another person that their family has to go through their possible death, or hospital bills. This scares me to even bring my little 4 year old brother into town, because what if I get mistaken for another person and they beat me up or shoot me. Then what is he going to do? He doesnt know! he is only 4 years old. Come on now people! Snap out of it!

Grew up in Fallbrook wrote on Apr 12, 2008 1:31 PM:I grew up in Fallbrook and it is not the same. Fallbrook once was a great place to raise a family, but now it is not. It has become more for the retired. There is nothing for the kids that live in the town to do, and it does not take long for kids to walk down Main St and find someone that is selling pot or pills. There has to be something done for the kids other then letting them find their own entertainment...or death by drugs. It is not just kids getting beat up or shot Tatum B. it is drugs also, and being a teenager, you know what I am talking about. Kids talk at school about what the got, or what they are going to get, or if you want some. It makes me sick, the town that was once safe for kids....is killing them.
Good luck to the future children of the town, and their children.

Fallbrook21 wrote on Apr 12, 2008 4:55 PM:This is incredible. A 16 year old kid was SHOT in the head. He was shot. I can't imagine what his parents are feeling right now. It is absurd to read people complain about the "gang banging" in Fallbrook when someone so devastating has happened here. Instead of complaining about the gang banging, why don't we clean up the streets. Why aren't there more people going into the "bad" neighborhoods, cleaning them up, educating kids...instead of looking at them and automatically assuming what their life will be like by the time they're 15 years old.
There is an obvious divide here in town, and now with more houses being built, more people coming in, we are to expect more problems to occur, yes? But when a 16 year old gets shot in front of a busy intersection IN PLAIN DAYLIGHT, there is definitely a problem.
May that kid get out of the hospital with at least his sanity. You know he's not going to be "normal" once he's out. Hoepfully they find who did this to him and settle what really happened.

Fallbrook Res wrote on Apr 12, 2008 4:59 PM:I know the youth. He is not a gang banger as some of you think. He is only another youth who is a product of and a victim of a violent society all around.

And our government is especially violent. Martin Luther King himself said the U.S. Government was the greatest purveyer of violence on earth. Many of the violent video games that our youth love so much are backed by the US military. So violence is a symptom of this country, not any one community.

Raised in Fallbrook wrote on Apr 12, 2008 5:07 PM:Whoever said Fallbrook was such a quiet and peaceful place? Up until recently, Fallbrook has been the hometown of the openly violent White Aryan Resistance, and I saw how the Latino community was terrorized by this group between the 80s and 90s. It wasn't until the Latino youth stood up against this racism that the violence decreased drastically for this community. Also, when you average it out, there have been more police related shootings in Fallbrook than any so called "gang-related" shootings.

Brook Town wrote on Apr 12, 2008 9:43 PM:Fallbrook used to be a one gang town. The local gang would just do stupid things like tagging and maybe a stabbing here and there if some Vista Home Boy was dumb enought to come north. Over the last few years, the gang injunctions in surrounding areas have forced other gangsters into moving. What better place to move than Fallbrook? Close to home, not near as many cops, plenty of naive citizens to take advantage of, and a relatively weak Hispanic gang to deal with. Thanks to all these gang injunctions, Fallbrook now has transplanted gang members from Oceanside, Escondido, San Marcos, and Vista. We don't really need any Deep Valley Crips in Fallbrook but now we have them. Thanks alot Oceanside. I'm suprised there is not more violant gang crime in Fallbrook than there is. Do any of you know that violent crime in Fallbrook rose this past year? Gee, I wonder why?

To Juan wrote on Apr 13, 2008 7:21 AM:I feel your pain over the loud partying--people who tell you to buy earplugs have never experienced the hell of living in a party zone neighborhood. I could be deaf and and would still feel the earth shaking--a boom boom boom that just turns my insides to quivering mush. I've heard the claim that that kind of concussive action actually changes the composition of the metal in cars, so if that's true, think what it's doing to us. As for the shooting, we don't know yet what happened--totally random stuff can happen. And will continue to happen as long as the "little things," like loud disrespectful partying in a neighborhood are ignored by those who are supposed to protect taxpayers from being intruded upon in their homes. I would not want to live somewhere with no neighbors, I like having neighbors, but for this to work, there need to be uniform and respectful guidelines for behavior. And as for not complaining directly to the people who bother us--people who spend their weekends shouting and drinking and jiving to loud viagra music in large groups outside of their houses are lacking in something and are not people I personally would be comfortable approaching and discussing what they are doing. On the contrary, in fact, I fear drawing their attention to me at all in any way whatsoever.

james wrote on Apr 13, 2008 9:02 AM:This horrible situation has nothing to do with Church, or religion or drugs. This was an act of violence that came from someone who needs to go to prison for a very long time. Would we feel better if the teenager was stabbed or beat neraly to death with the baseball bat?
The genuine issue is all about parenting. Know where your teenager is and who they hang out with. If the teenager is heading in the wrong direction the paretn needs to sprint ahead and cut them off. Gangs can not exist without gang members. Teenagers can not belong to gangs if they are held in the house by parents or grabbed by the scruff of the neck and physically separated from the gang by a parnet. The police are not the parents. The gangs can not be allowed to take the place of parents. The teenager needs to have his options planned and his butt in structured programs. The highschool is filled with sports and arts. get your kids invloved. For thoise kids in gangs, parents get them off the streetsw now before they end up in Jail or on the parking lot tarmac with a bullet from a gang member or a cop in their body. Stop blaming the teenager or the perceived lack of things to do in the town, what a corck. Blame the parents, it is their responsibility, it is their child.

Linda wrote on Apr 13, 2008 11:31 AM:Everyone of us is entitled to a peaceful life. Our day to day lives may not always include this, but we are still entitled. It is not to much to ask of anyone to be courteous to your neighbors. Everyone is entitled to a party once in a while, a celebration is a wonderful part of our lives. Every Weekend though, is stretching it a bit to far.Remember if you will, that when you feel upset about someone else's behavior, try to walk in their shoes first. Do unto others as you would have them do unto YOU. Pretty simple rule wouldn't you say?
To the young person who fired the gun into a fellow teenagers head, did he really deserve to be critically wounded or even die for the reason you had in your head at the time. Did he not deserve a life, one that goes on beyond 16 years. No children or family or even possibly becoming your best buddy later on, If you had stopped to think and walk in his shoes for just a moment, today would feel a lot better than it does. It only takes one split second to ruin your life and someone else's. I am betting you wish you could use a time machine and go back and NOT do what you did.
At that moment in front of Carls's Jr. you were angry for some reason, a reason so powerful that you felt that is was your duty to take a life. So angry that everything else in the world was not important. Only your feelings of anger. Are you still that angry? What are you feeling right now. Remember your gang family is not going to jail, you are. They are not going to be there for you. The reason is that they were never your family to begin with. I am sorry you thought they were.
As far as blaming parents etc. Blame is a word that is used far to much.It is amazing how quick we are to blame someone or something . Blame this , blame that, it gets a bit old.Blame leads us to live in the past, and that is where you will stay. Moving forward in a positive way is where you need to go. The gang members you see most likely will not have responsible parents to guide them, that is why they are in gangs. It is to bad that a gang has to become the family they as humans inherently need. I would suggest researching the whole psychology of gangs to begin with. Looking to their parents is like getting blood from a turnip. So for the complainers out there, I have always said ,"if you are not part of the solution, then you are part of the polution" And yes it does take a village to raise a child. Do your part if you can, step up to the plate.
