PREP BRIEFS: San Pasqual faculty, students to play benefit game for Goetz

By North County Times | Monday, April 14, 2008 11:47 PM PDT

San Pasqual High will hold a benefit basketball game for Kim Goetz, the longtime special education teacher who died recently of a heart attack.

The game, scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday in the San Pasqual gym, will feature teachers and coaches from the school against athletes and students. It will benefit the National Kidney Foundation because, at the time of his death, Goetz was scheduled to donate a kidney to his brother.

Goetz, who played basketball at San Diego State, was known as "The Long Ranger" because of his ability to hit long-range shots. After starring for the Aztecs from 1977-79, including averaging 20.5 points during the 1978-79 season, he was a second-round draft pick (34th overall) of the New York Knicks.

He was inducted into the Aztec Hall of Fame in 2006.

There is no admission charge for the game, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds from donations, food sales and raffles will be donated to the National Kidney Foundation.

Rahon named all-state

High-scoring Torrey Pines guard James Rahon was named third-team all-state by Cal-Hi Sports.

The two-time Palomar League player of the year averaged 25 points a game and was a CIF San Diego Section first-team selection. Rahon will play next season at Santa Clara.

Horizon's Jeff Withey, a 7-footer bound for Arizona, was named first-team all-state. He was the San Diego Section player of the year.

San Diego sophomore Jeremy Tyler also made the third team.

Morris wins AGJA tournament

Carlsbad sophomore Rachel Morris won her fourth American Junior Golf Association tournament on Sunday, as she carded a 2-over 218 in the Wellstone Communities Junior at Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

Morris, a two-time CIF San Diego Section player of the year, also won the event last year.

On the boys side of the tournament, Ben Itterman of La Costa Canyon finished tied for fifth with a 4-over 220.
