HIGH DESERT 7, STORM 2: Orta lifts Mavs past Storm

By The Californian | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 5:56 AM PDT

Ricky Orta has been one of the better pitchers in the California League in the early going this season. Nothing the Storm did on Monday night could change that.

Orta threw six shutout innings and Kuo Hui Lo blasted a two-run homer as High Desert defeated Lake Elsinore 7-2 at State Bros. Stadium, for its sixth win in seven games.

The Storm (7-5) lost the opener of the three-game series against the Mavericks after sweeping three from Lancaster over the weekend. With the victory, High Desert (8-4) takes a one-game lead over the Storm in the Cal South Division.

Orta scattered four hits to raise his record to 3-0, and lower his ERA to 1.50. He set 11 hitters down in a row from the first inning to the fifth. When he left after the top of the sixth inning, the Mavericks had a 6-0 lead.

Storm starter Corey Kluber was touched for six runs in five innings and suffered his first loss of the season.

Lake Elsinore second baseman Eric Sogard had the only extra-base hit off of Orta, a double in the sixth when the Storm loaded the bases with one out. But Orta retired Mike Baxter on a popout and Robert Perry on a flyout to quell the uprising.

Javis Diaz, who entered the game as the leading hitter in the Cal League, went 2-for-5 and had an RBI single in the top of the ninth, when the Storm pushed across both of their runs to avert the shutout. Second baseman Jon Schemmel was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

High Desert designated hitter Carlos Peguero, the league's RBI leader, went 1-for-3 and scored a run.
