REGION: Anti-war activist speaks at Cal State San Marcos
Cindy Sheehan recalls her journey as peace activist
By GARY WARTH - Staff Writer | ∞
Peace activist Cindy Sheehan spoke at CSUSM before a full house at the auditorium in the Arts Building on Thursday.(DON BOOMER / Staff photographer) SAN MARCOS ---- Cindy Sheehan has been many things. A peace activist. An outspoken critic of the Bush administration. A candidate for Congress.
But on Thursday night at Cal State San Marcos, where she spoke to about 250 people, Sheehan reminded the audience of the one role she cannot escape: Grieving mother.
"He wanted to be a chaplain's assistant," she said about her son, Casey, who joined the Army in 2000 to get an education. "I didn't want him to join. He was my first child. He would be the first child leaving the nest."
Sheehan said she cried every night for two weeks after he left. On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, she said she had a premonition.
"I don't know if I had a mother's intuition, but I somehow knew that Sept. 11 would be the cause of my son's death."
Four years after her son's death in Iraq, Sheehan still is visibly shaken talking about it. She revisited the painful subject again because it is forever intertwined with her transformation from homemaker to internationally known activist
After her son's death, Sheehan said, she wore a T-shirt with a picture of his face on the front, and when she told people he had died in the war, some people asked, "What war?"
Such upsetting encounters fueled a growing desire in Sheehan to make people think about the war, she said. A tipping point came one day while she was at home and saw President Bush say that families of those lost in Iraq should know they died for a noble cause.
Sheehan said she waited for a reporter to ask, "What noble cause?" When none came, she became determined to ask the president himself.
After attending a conference with Veterans for Peace in Dallas, Sheehan stayed in Texas during the summer of 2005 and began a vigil outside of Bush's ranch near Crawford, vowing not to leave until she had a one-on-one audience with the president.
As reporters outside the ranch learned of her story, supporters began to join the demonstration. An estimated 1,500 people visited Sheehan's "Camp Casey" every day during her four-week vigil.
Remembering how some people had called her arrogant for thinking she deserved a private meeting with the president, Sheehan told the audience that he is supposed to be accountable to the people.
"The president of the United States works for me," she said. "He works for you, and you."
The one-on-one meeting never happened, and Sheehan became a symbol of many family members frustrated at an ongoing war for an unclear cause that continues to cost American lives.
"People say, ‘Oh, you just want revenge,' " Sheehan said. "I don't. I want justice. Other people have had their family members murdered, and they want justice."
Harshly critical of the Bush administration, Sheehan said she became inspired to run for Congress after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said impeachment against Bush and Vice President Cheney was off the table. She is running against Pelosi as an independent and said if she is elected, she will introduce articles of impeachment against Bush and Cheney each day they remain in office.
The comment grew loud applause from the young audience that consisted mostly of CSUSM students who welcomed her with a standing ovation.
While Sheehan spends most of her time near San Francisco to campaign, her spokeswoman, Tiffany Burns, said she also raises money through talks and other events outside of her district. Sheehan was scheduled to attend a private event in Los Angeles on Friday.
Tickets were free for the CSUSM event, and Sheehan was paid a stipend as part of a speakers series at the university. Women's Studies Professor Linda Pershing, who invited Sheehan, declined to say how much she was paid, although she did offer that it was "nowhere near" the fee of $10,000 that Sheehan sometimes gets.
When asked about the fee, Sheehan said, "I don't think it's anybody's business."

Her next step like so many activists was to inflate the real numbers to make her case look better until she began to out and out lie about the war, the government and the military. Doubt if any of the posters bothered with report issued yesterday by those wacky folks at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, a Defense Department research center, who rated Bush's war in Iraq: "a major debacle" (with credit given, where credit is due, to Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney & Condoleezza Rice).
Have to wonder, does this make the National Defense University "...just another America hater who will do anything to make this country look bad.", "Communist" and/or "Traitor"?

We call them names and, unable to come up with any other reason why they do what they do, always fall back on: they're just in it for the money. So let's say she DOES make a pretty penny out of this. Does that have any bearing whatsoever on the truth of what she says? Of course not. But rather than discuss her actual opinions, we run around like headless chickens desperate to find SOME way to dismiss her entirely. A communist! An America hater! Greedy! Nuts! She hurts her family! Anything but dealing with the actual opinions, one by one. What a bunch of cowards.
Bush set the bar too low wrote on Apr 18, 2008 9:18 AM:Thanks to our President, no one can ever accuse someone of "using someone's death as a platform" again. Bush and Cheney used the 9-11 attacks as (Cheney's word) an "oppportunity" to expand the power of the Executive and to carry out unprovoked warfare that they had wanted to carry out from day one. Thousands of lives have been lost as a result. So I personally wouldn't hold it against Ms Sheehan if she did "use her son't death" as a reason to blast her opinions about this war. Compared to what Bush and Cheney have done, it's nothing.

But you critics don't care about the trillions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of deaths your taxpayer dollars paid for. Yes Sheehan got paid something. So what. It takes money to live and run for office. Sheehan was just an ordinary (not some rich politician) person until the death of her son and then she did what most of us wouldn't and decided to stand out and do what an ordinary person (without daddy's millions) could do. Yet you people without shame call her a communist, traitor,America hater and what she is doing is a slap in the face of our military. So she makes money off of what she is doing. Do any of you Sheehan haters do any work for free. She has bills to pay and since she spends time trying to make our crooked politicians take responsibility for their crimes she should be paid. Activism is a full-time job and it is work. It is akin to a political pundit discussing politics on CNN. They certainly don't work for free. As far as the idiotic comments about burning books etc., I won't even digify with a response. As far as why we went in the first place, I agree. I was perfectly happy with the policy of containment against his regime. Unfortunately, he was a madman who was aptly hanged by HIS people for genocide against them. Let me tell you about the first free election. A 82 yr old Muslim woman came up to me at a polling place and proudly showed me her ink stained finger showing her vote with tears in her eyes. That made it worth it. We do not want another vietnam . We have shed the blood of my brothers and sisters. Most of us are Volunteering again for multiple tours. Need I remind you we hae no draft. Freedom isn't Free. Even Al Quadas second in command just remarked that Iraq is a perfect place to disgrace us and any ideas of Arab democracy. I respect everyones right to share their opinion and VOTE. The Iraqis had a higher turnout in their election than the US did. Maybe they don't take their newfound freedom for granted. Let the professionals fight like we are Trained and want to do and stay home and enjoy your freedom or get in the fight. It's not just Iraq it's worldwide against Muslim extremists who want to destroy your way of life. Better get used to it. Thank a MARINE OR SOLDIER IF YOU SEE ONE TODAY. It is our military who is paying protection money to the various malitias. I have had enough of these military people telling us how they are protecting us. Just maybe if they didn't go into other countries and create enemies we wouldn't have a problem. No I have had enough of this rubbish. As has been said the Vietnam war ended when we left. It will be the same when we leave although I don't think that we ever intended to leave. As far as calling Sheehan a miserable creature maybe if this Iraqi vet wants to see miserable creatures he should go into the refugee camps and talk to the people there because it is our military who put them there. Maybe he should talk to the widows and orphans that our military created. I am fed of with the hostile arrogant attitued of the military toward those of us who know why we are hated and it isn't because the other side is commposed of a bunch of people who hate us just for who we are. Okay. What are you?
You go to war, on a nation, where your presence is causing the killing of many innocent people. How do you feel about that?
Anyway, I attended the meeting. Missed most of it actually. On the way out, I saw an advertisement for a class to study Upward Mobility, to get into it I suppose. Is that what we are about? Get into Iraq. Kill someone. You'll probably get promoted. Is that what you are about? The campus doesn't matter. A bunch of students interested in upward mobility. From what I saw, they weren't interested. In the point of the war. Who is?
It certainly is not the soldiers, who go into it, as if they expect to get killed... I hope she grieves.
A writer came from this newspaper... Sure he did. He arrived late. Very late. He missed the main things Sheehan said. So did many people that did not attend this pithy meeting. You live in a military county. What would you expect. This notion of war, is not a war. It has been repeated before. You are all fools! Think about it. Why don't we fight them here, instead of there. Or do you like that 'other' people are suffering for YOUR cause.

The difference between you and most others is that you and your brothers and sisters serving with you risk everything for your beliefs. Cindy Sheehan is a disgrace not because she opposes the war but because she has used her son’s unfortunate death to further her misguided ambitions. Moms don’t do that. I was in the service during Vietnam and I saw first hand how many veterans were treated by the anti-military crowd. I have vowed to not let that happen again. The debate needs to continue but Cindy Sheehan’s rhetoric and the screeching from hysterical groups like Code Pink is counter productive. Many Americans are impatient with the Iraqi people. They forget how long it took this country to become established. There will be setbacks and mistakes have been made but the goals in this war are honorable.

And if Cindy Sheehan wants to embarrass herself and tarnish her son's image for a profit so be it. I am glad her son isn't alive to see all this. He was a volunteer who gave everything for this country. He obviously held different views than his mother. I attended CSUSM years ago and found the institution way to radically liberal for me. I left to attend a different school and strongly advise anyone else to do the research before enrolling to see if this school represents their views and personal values. You would think any legitimate institution for higher learning would offer a speaker with an opposing view to see both sides of the debate and leave the audience to make there on conclusions.

The US military is handing out millions of dollars of taxpayer money a month for protection so that the malitias won't attack them. I attended Sheehan's speech (not affiliated with any blog or organization) and would place a bet that every one of you who objects to her right to speak out did not attend.
And how bout some facts - what has she said that is false? Tell me more about her family and your first-person, or reputable source, facts that she has shamed her family or the memory of her son.
When I returned from Vietnam in 1971, I got no disrespect, people were more interested in my well being and whether I would talk to them about my first hand experiences - and I returned to radical California. In fact I know no Vet that was disrespected in any way.
And Sheehan is not pushing for impeachment because she disagrees with policy, impeachment is mandated because bush/cheney are war criminals.

Israel is the strongest country in the middle east, and it will crush any arab country before it gets close to being able to threaten it. We're on the other side of the world. How are we threatened in any way such that our armed forces actually enhance our security by fighting and dying in Iraq?

Without jacko politicians and money grubbers, we never would've GONE to Iraq. The whole reason we are IN Iraq is for the benefit of the jacko politicians and money grubbers. Meanwhile, in Afghanistan, where those who actually attacked us are located, we've cut and run and as a result, they have completely recuperated from their early defeat and are gaining political strength every day. Heckuva job, jacko politicians and money grubbers. ...
As usual wrote on Apr 20, 2008 4:35 PM:As usual the fascists disguise their desire for censorship in the language of fair and balanced. By claiming that the whole world is liberal, they want liberals silenced. Sheehan should not have been invited to CSUSM. It's a radical liberal school. Bla bla bla. But in reality, the Sheehans that occasionally get a moment in front of a microphone, ARE the balance that is so missing from the national debate. How many people on the mainstream news have you see that insisted we get out of Iraq immediately? How many people have written columns in the NY Times that Bush and Cheney be impeached? If you guessed "zero" you get the prize. The famous "liberal" media won't even consider asking McCain a tough question. They're too busy with Hillary's pantsuits and Obama's lapel. But if you repeat "liberal media" often enough, then you justify screaming for your actual intent: to completely silence the true left. I salute the students of CSUSM and the academic departments that bring people like Sheehan to campus to make an effort to balance the non-stop, 24/7 propaganda machine that is split between the "moderate right" and the "radical right" in this country.
