TEMECULA ---- Matt Rahn, director of the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve, will give a presentation on endangered species when the Sierra Club's Santa Margarita Group meets at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Rancho California Water District headquarters.

Future events, such as hikes and walks, also will be discussed.

Hospital auxiliary plans book, gift sale

SUN CITY ---- The Menifee Valley Medical Center Auxiliary will hold a book and gift sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the hospital.

A portion of the proceeds go to the auxiliary for hospital projects.

Elks Ladies plan fashion show

LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Elks Ladies from the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge will host a fashion show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Trevi Entertainment Center.

Fashions will be by Jeff Anderson. Lunch is included. Tickets cost $25 and proceeds go toward scholarships.

Marine Corps League to gather

MURRIETA ---- The monthly meeting of the Marine Corps League, Southwest Riverside County Detachment No. 1057, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the fire station on Clinton Keith Road.

The post recently received a state charter and changed its name from Murrieta/Temecula to Southwest County to increase its membership reach.

In its first official act, the post nominated member Don Krampe, of Murrieta, for the national Marine Corps League Man of the Year award.

The post meets the last Saturday of each month at 38900 Clinton Keith Road. All active and former Marines and Navy Corpsman with honorable service are invited.

Flower, garden show this weekend

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Garden Club will host its 23rd Annual Flower Show and Garden Fair on Saturday and Sunday at the Temecula Community Recreation Center.

The theme is "Flower and Fabric Inspirations." Work by local quilters will be on display in each flower section, showing the impact garden beauties have had on fabric and quilt design.

Registration will be taken Friday for plant and garden entries.

Gourd patch group to meet

TEMECULA ---- The Fallbrook Area Gourd Patch will have its spring meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Temecula home of member Vickie Echols.

Wildomar Historical Society plans event, contest

WILDOMAR ---- The Wildomar Historical Society is sponsoring a community service event to wash the markers at Wildomar Cemetery from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Boy Scout Pack 332, Wildomar Little League and Girl Scout Troops 1410, 349 and 4055 have volunteered.

As part of the event, Bob Cashman, founder and president of the Wildomar Historical Society, will give a presentation on Wildomar history.

The historical society is also looking for the oldest residents of Wildomar and those who have called Wildomar their home for decades in conjunction with the upcoming cityhood celebration July 1.

GOP group to host commentator, candidates

TEMECULA ---- Radio commentator Rick Amato and candidates for state offices will speak when the Murrieta-Temecula Republican Club meets May 2 at Pat & Oscar's.

Amato, also a columnist with the Washington Times, will speak at 7 p.m.

The club will hold an endorsement convention starting at 8 p.m. Invited are Assemblyman John Benoit, former Assemblyman Russ Bogh and David Peters, who are running in the 37th Senate District; Brian Nestande and Kelly McCarty, candidates in the 64th Assembly District; and Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries, 66th District.

Check-in is 6 p.m. for Amato's talk and 7:45 for the endorsement meeting.

The cost is $15 for members, $20 for others and $10 for students for dinner and the program. There is no cost for the endorsement meeting only.

Rotary sponsors annual run

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Sunrise Rotary Club will hold its 21st annual Run through the Vineyards May 3 at Maurice Car'rie Winery.

Activities begin at 7:45 a.m. with a 5-kilometer run, followed by a 2-kilometer Kid's Race for those 12 and younger at 8:15 a.m., a 10K run at 8:45 a.m. and a 2K Fun Walk at 9 a.m.

There are cash prizes for the top four men and women in the 5k and 10k runs.

Proceeds are used by the Temecula Sunrise Rotary Club for community service and vocational and academic scholarships.

The entry fee is $25 in advance. and $35 on race day. For 5K and 10K combo runners, the fee is $40. A family can run for $50. All runners will receive a race T-shirt.

Rose society plans annual festival

TEMECULA --- "Pacific Serenade" is the theme for the Temecula Valley Rose Society's annual Rose & Arts Festival from noon to 4 p.m. May 3 and 4 at the Community Recreation Center.

The free festival will feature roses, music, original floral artwork, seminars on rose care, cultivation, photography and display and activities for children.

Visitors can see roses representing Pacific Rim countries, including Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico, Costa Rica and Peru, and the Pacific Islands, including Fiji, Hawaii and New Zealand.

Rose enthusiasts are invited to display their roses and enter them in the competition. Contestants should bring their entries to the Community Recreation Center between 8 and 9:30 a.m. May 3. Entry information is available online at www.temeculavalleyrosesociety.org.

Temecula singers headed to competition

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Wine Valley Harmonizers, a men's a Capella chorus, will participate in its first chorus competition May 3 in Garden Grove.

Vendors sought for flea market

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Woman's Club Museum Committee is looking for vendors for its annual flea market June 14.

The event will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sam Hicks Monument Park on the grounds of the Temecula Valley Museum. A 10-foot-by-10-foot vendor space costs $25. Proceeds go to the museum.

Food drive under way at college

MENIFEE ---- A food drive to help the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard fill its shelves is under way at the Mt. San Jacinto College Menifee Valley campus.

The drive will take place through May 15. Collection bins are located in the counseling office, cafeteria and the Learning Resource Center.

Soup, cake mixes, peanut butter, canned vegetables, pasta, beans and boxed cereal are among the items needed. The food drive will not accept any perishable items.

Landscape photography focus of event

TEMECULA ---- The Study of Landscape Through Photography will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Temecula Valley Museum.

Railway festival this weekend

PERRIS ---- The annual Railway Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Orange Empire Railway Museum in Perris.

In conjunction with the festival, the first Favorites Fun Festival, featuring popular cartoon characters such as Barney, Bob The Builder, Angelina Ballerina and Thomas the Tank Engine.

The Railway Festival offers visitors a chance to see the museum's collection of antique trains and trolleys. Children and adults can ride on the trains and trolleys and participate in arts and crafts. The museum also offers numerous displays and activities.

Ensemble to perform at church

Murrieta to host youth baseball contest

MURRIETA ---- The city will host the annual Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition at 1 p.m. Sunday at Los Alamos Hills Sports Park.

Pitch Hit and Run is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to participate in a free competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball skills.

Competitors are divided into four age divisions ---- 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 ---- and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition.

The individual pitching, hitting and running champions, along with the all-around champion in each age group, will receive awards and advance to the Sectional Level of Competition.

All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and fill out a registration form prior to the start of the competition.

Band to host fundraiser

MURRIETA ---- Vista Murrieta High School's Golden Alliance marching band will host a fundraisier Sunday at Monteleone Meadows.

"Afternoon With the Chefs" will feature food from local restaurants as well as music and raffles.

Tickets cost $20 and proceeds will support the band's upcoming trip to The Grand National Championships in Indianapolis.

Agency plans casting call

MURRIETA ---- A casting call for those interested in the chance to appear in TV commercials and print ads will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday in Murrieta.

Stepping into Hollywood asks that those auditioning dress casually, bring a snapshot and be prepared to say something about themselves. All types of people are needed, from 6 months to senior, organizers say.

MSJC golf tournament is Monday

SAN JACINTO ---- The 22nd Annual Mt. San Jacinto College Eagle Athletic Club Scholarship Golf Classic will be held Monday at the Country Club at Soboba Springs.

The entry fee is $125. Proceeds benefit MSJC's student athletes and the Eagle Athletic Club.

Participants receive a cart, range balls, box lunch, barbecue dinner, polo shirt and prizes. There will be a contest at each hole and a chance to win a new car.
