CARLSBAD: Free frog program planned

CARLSBAD ---- Hoping to promote a greater appreciation of the area's frogs and toads, the nonprofit Preserve Calavera group will host a free public education program from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Agua Hedionda Discovery Center.

Susan Nowicke, president of the San Diego Herpetological Society, will discuss amphibians and their relationship to local issues, including stormwater runoff and the health of local waterways.

Organizers said Wednesday's event is timed to coincide with the National Wildlife Federation's FrogWatch 2008 Record the Ribbet campaign, which begins May 3. During that national amphibian appreciation day, people can record local frog noises and then document the information on the Federation's Web site, www.nwf.org/frogwatchUSA.

Wednesday's talk is the first of a series that Preserve Calavera plans to host this year. Other sessions will include hawks and coyotes. The center is at 1580 Cannon Road.
