Retired history teacher to address Mayflower group
SAN DIEGO ---- "Native American Views on Colonization" is the topic of the program to be presented by Evelyn McKinney, a retired history teacher and part Occaneechi Indian, at the meeting of the San Diego Colony Mayflower Descendants at 11:30 a.m. May 3 in the Lord Jim Room of The Best Western Seven Seas, 411 Hotel Circle South.
McKinney will talk about the Indians' lives from the Jamestown period through Western colonization. City attorney candidate Maienschein speaking to Rotary
SAN DIEGO ---- San Diego city attorney candidate Brian Maienschein will speak at the San Diego North Rotary Club meeting at 7 a.m. May 8 at the Doubletree Golf Resort, just west of the I-15 freeway and Carmel Mountain Road.
Maienschein was first elected to the San Diego City Council in November 2000 and is completing his second term. He is one of five candidates trying to unseat incumbent City Attorney Mike Aguirre.

Discussion session planned
CARLSBAD ---- The Humanistic Jewish Congregation of San Diego will present the first in a series of Discussion Buffets on Humanistic Judaism at 10:30 a.m. May 4 at the Woman's Club of Carlsbad, 3320 Monroe St.
Three leaders of the movement will discuss, on videotape, how the core philosophy empowers Jews to live a life of courage, personal integrity and intellectual honesty. A light buffet luncheon will be served. A $5 donation is requested.

Dewhurst & Associates to sponsor golf tournament
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Dewhurst & Associates, a family-based custom home building and remodeling company, is a sponsor of TERI's 19th Annual Dirce Schwarz Memorial Golf Tournament, to be held May 2. Tee off is 12:30 p.m. at the Rancho Bernardo Inn at 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive. Cost is $275 per person, $1,000 for a foursome.
The Training Education & Research Institute is an Oceanside-based nonprofit corporation serving those with developmental and learning disabilities and their families. Tournament proceeds will help build TERI's Center for Research & Life Planning. This campus will support families with children with autism and other developmental disabilities. The Center for Research & Life Planning will also be dedicated to studying quality of life for individuals with autism.

Pug group plans party
DEL MAR ---- Pug Rescue of San Diego County will host its 17th annual Pug Party from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 3 at the infield pavilion at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
The theme is "Renaissance Pugs," with prizes given for Best Theme Costume, Best Pug-Owner Lookalike, and more. Contest fee is $5 per pug. Enjoy the pug boutique, many vendors with food and pet-related merchandise and a raffle table.

Motorcycle rally set
SAN MARCOS ---- The Palomar Police Academy 5th Officer Down Memorial Motorcycle Rally and Rod Run will take place May 3 at the Palomar Police Academy, 162 Santar Place.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the ride begins at 9 a.m. Lunch follows at noon. Cost is $25 per rider, $30 for a two-up. There will be raffle prizes, a barbecue lunch and memorial ride pin for all riders honoring deputy Jeff Mitchell from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. Proceeds will go into the trust fund for his son, Jake Mitchell.

Benefit concert set for May 4
SAN MARCOS ---- A benefit concert of highlights from "Die Fledermaus," an operetta, will take place at 7 p.m. May 4 at Meadowlark Church, 1918 Redwing St. It will features opera singers Cynthia Karp and Georgetta Psaros, with San Diego tenors Jef Olson and Max Chodos, as well as local opera singers and chamber musicians.

Mamafest set for May 7
CARDIFF ---- On May 7, hundreds of moms will gather for Mamafest featuring the LUNA film festival to celebrate and support motherhood with food, drink, shopping and workshops to learn more about being the best mothers they can be. Mamafest will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Temple Sol El, 3575 Manchester Ave.
Mamafest is hosted by Stroller Strides, a San Marcos-based fitness company that serves new mothers by helping them get fit after pregnancy. Stroller Strides hosts the annual event to help raise awareness and funds for the Postpartum Health Alliance, a group that helps women with postpartum depression, and the Breast Cancer Fund.
Tickets are $20 for preregistered adults or $25 at the door.

Humane society plans fundraiser
CARLSBAD –– Marking 70 years of support and compassion for the well-being of animals and people, the North County Humane Society & SPCA will host its second Paws to Celebrate fundraiser gala May 17 at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. The 1930s Hollywood-themed, black-tie optional event will feature a silent auction, cocktail reception and whodunit theatrics, courtesy of the Mystery Cafe.
The reception and silent auction are from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with dinner from 7:30 to 10 p.m. VIP tickets cost $225 and include priority seating, a patron gift, hosted wine with dinner, valet parking and program acknowledgement. Regular tickets are $125; discounted group tables are available.

All proceeds will benefit the more than 7,000 animals sheltered at the North County Humane Society every year.
Mama's Kitchen planning fundraiser
SAN DIEGO ---- Mama's Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that cooks and delivers meals to clients with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses throughout San Diego County, will hold its 17th annual Mama's Day event from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 9 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla.
Presented by Sycuan Resort & Casino, Mama's Day is the organization’s signature fundraising event. Hundreds of guests will sample fare from 70 of San Diego’s hottest restaurants, including recently opened Red Marlin and Blanca. Many local favorites return, including Rice, Extraordinary Desserts, and Cafe Japengo. Guests will also enjoy desserts, cocktails and music by DJ Tim Altbaum. Tickets are $125 each.
