Oceanside Elks to hold bingo

Santa Margarita DAR meets
OCEANSIDE ---- The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 9:30 a.m. May 10 at the El Camino Country Club, 3202 Vista Way. After breakfast, members Jeanne Bartman, Jacqueline Lee and Marsi Millonzi will share stories about their Revolutionary War ancestors. Paula-Jo Calhoon, incoming director of District XIV, will install newly elected officers.

League of Women Voters to meet
OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside/Vista Unit of the North Coast League of Women Voters will meet at 11:30 a.m. May 12 at the Audubon Nature Center, 2202 S. Coast Highway. Attendees will discuss news items of interest to the community. Memorial Day services set for May 26
OCEANSIDE ---- The combined veterans and fraternal organizations of North County will hold Memorial Day services at 10 a.m. May 26 at the Oceanside Elks Lodge, 444 Country Club Lane, Oceanside. The event has been moved this year to the Elks Lodge. Guest speaker will be Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood; music provided by Cathie and Dewey. A light lunch will be served after the ceremony. Fundraiser benefits wounded military
OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Republican Women Federated and the Wounded Warrior Project will host a "Great Gatsby" Party and Croquet Tournament from 3 to 8:30 p.m. May 31 at the El Camino Country Club, 3202 Vista Way. Tickets are $60 per person. Sponsorships also are needed. Proceeds go to help returning troops suffering from traumatic brain injuries. Call (866) 258-2889.
Outdoor Sculpture Competition set
OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Arts Commission will hold the first Outdoor Sculpture Competition from noon to 4 p.m. June 21 at City Hall Plaza. Winners will be announced at 4 p.m. and their sculptures exhibited in the Oceanside Public Library Courtyard through the month of August. This "open" juried competition is for artists residing in San Diego County and will feature awards for Best of Show, $2,000; Second Place, $1,000; Honorable Mention, $500; and People's Choice, $500.
"Call for Sculptures" can be downloaded from the city Web site at www.ci.oceanside.ca.us under "What Is New." Deadline for submissions is May 9. Finalists will be notified the week of May 19. Call (760) 435-5606.

Vista Historical Society meets in Valley Center
VISTA ---- Vista Historical Society and Museum volunteers will meet May 7 to carpool to the Valley View Casino buffet followed by a visit to the Valley Center History Museum. Register for Pop Warner/Cheer
VISTA ---- Final registration for the Vista Pop Warner Football and Cheer will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 10 at Foothill Oak Elementary School, 1370 Oak Drive. Any child ages 5 to 15 may participate. Flag Division is $125 for ages 5-6, includes practice uniforms and game uniforms. Tackle Football for ages 7-15 is $250, includes practice and game uniforms. Carlsbad's village fair set for May 4
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce will host the Carlsbad Village Street Faire from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 4 in the heart of Carlsbad, along Grand Avenue from Carlsbad Boulevard to Jefferson Street, and all the cross streets in between. The biannual event features more than 900 vendors, a pancake breakfast, a beer and wine garden, an international food court, and a children's area with rides and games. Parking is limited and visitors are encouraged to use the free shuttles that run to and from the fair every 15 minutes. Shuttle pick-up locations are at the northwest corner of Sears at Westfield Plaza Camino Real (Highway 78 and Jefferson) and at the Poinsettia Coaster Station (Poinsettia exit off of Interstate 5). Learn to cook Persian food

Lagoon to host first fishing tournament
CARLSBAD ---- The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation will hold its first Celebrity Fishing Tournament fundraiser from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 17. Registration begins at 6 a.m. at the Discovery Center, 1580 Cannon Road (east end of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon). Fishing starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. People will be able to fish from boats, kayaks and the lagoon banks. Prizes will be awarded in three categories ---- bass, sportfin croaker and California halibut. First place in all three categories is $500; for second and third places, prize is fishing equipment. Fifteen Hollywood celebrities will be joined by current and retired San Diego Chargers and San Diego Padres. Awards ceremony, auction and a food and beverage reception for all competitors at The Lagoon Discovery Center. Gulp sample packs of bait will be given to each fisherman. Cost is $35. Music guild elects officers
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Music Guild recently elected these officers: Bea Sklarewitz, chairwoman; Phyliss Turner, vice chairwoman; Norma Showalter, treasurer; and Bruce Mason, secretary. The board also named local composer Harry Eiler as artistic director.
Center offers senior Pilates
ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Senior Center offers a "Gentle Pilates" class from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays at the center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Seniors can add grace to aging by learning to move from the core, strengthen, lengthen and pick up new cues for better posture. Students bring a mat and pillow to class. The class is for ages 50 and up and is ongoing throughout the year. Cost is $5 per class, paid at the beginning of the month for the entire month. Call (760) 943-2250.

Author to lead kids' play workshop

E-waste collection set for May 3
SOLANA BEACH ---- An E-Waste Collection Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, 120 Stevens Ave. Accepted items include computers, monitors, laptops, TVs, fax machines, copy machines, scanners, printers, cell phones, telephones and items containing electronic boards. Conservancy to host San Elijo Lagoon Day
ENCINITAS ----- San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy will host its annual Lagoon Day, "Celebrate with Mother Nature," from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 at the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. Because the reserve's Nature Center is being reconstructed, activities will take place at two locations on the south side of the lagoon: the Rios Avenue trailhead on the west side of I-5, and the Santa Carina trailhead on the east side. The 2.5-mile trail between them will be open for hikers. Free. Both trailheads will feature special displays and exhibits. Activities will include a 5-K run with conservancy Executive Director Doug Gibson at 8:30 a.m., a docent-led public walk from the Rios Avenue trailhead from 9 to 11 a.m. and children's story times near the Santa Carina trailhead at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Also, an archaeology and American Indian display, a bird-watching station with a spotting scope, and a doggy welcome table (dogs, please have your owner on a leash). Group to explore 'What Matters'

Get a 'Taste of Thailand'
CARLSBAD ---- The fundraiser "A Taste of Thailand" will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. May 10 at the Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine St., featuring food samplings from North County's Thai restaurants, fine Thai wine and beer, classical dance and music performed by Thai Art Culture and Entertainment Services, Thai foot and hand massages, fortune telling, and a silent auction and raffle. Master of ceremonies will be Phoebe Chongchua, former morning news anchor for Channel 10.
The host organization, Toys for Thailand, is an all-volunteer group of educators from Palomar and MiraCosta colleges and professionals from the Orange County and San Diego community. All proceeds will benefit the 500 abandoned children at the Wat Don Chan Temple Orphanage in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Cost is $30 in advance, $35 at the door.
