San Marcos Pop Warner to hold registration, evaluations

SAN MARCOS ---- San Marcos Pop Warner will hold late registration and new player evaluations from 8 a.m.-1p.m. May 10 on the football field at Bradley Park.

Registration is for tackle and flag football, noncompetitive cheer (Flag and Mighty Mite, ages 5-8), and competitive cheer (ages 9-14). New player evaluations is for new players in all divisions, except the Midget Division.

E-waste recycling event on tap

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- A free electronic waste collection event will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 10 at Rolling Hills Elementary School, 15255 Penasquitos Drive. Electronics collected will be trucked away and recycled by Electronic Recyclers International. Call (800) RECYCLING.

Rotary barbecue to honor military

ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido East Rotary Club will hold its annual barbecue honoring the military from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. May 10 at Kit Carson Park, 3333 Bear Valley Parkway, across from the Girl Scout Lodge.

Active-duty military personnel and their families can attend for free. Tickets for others are $10 for adults and $5 for youths 12 and under. Live music, raffles, games and face painting for the kids. Call (760) 489-5131.

Exhibit opens at Escondido Municipal Gallery

ESCONDIDO ---- The exhibit "Local Color & Your Basic Black" opened May 8 at the Escondido Municipal Gallery, 142 W. Grand. The juried exhibit, which runs through June 6, features more than 45 pieces of large scale oils, acrylics, photography and mixed-media art.

Escondido newcomer Brian Gibson received top honors for his piece "Light and Freedom." E.A. Feliu's work titled "Society Woman" was awarded second place, and Jeremiah Miller's "Clipper" received third place.

The show's juror, Betti-Sue Hertz, is the curator of Contemporary Art at the San Diego Museum of Art.

Volunteers sought for creek bed cleanup

POWAY ---- I Love A Clean San Diego, in collaboration with At Last, You're Organized!, will host the Poway Creek Bed Cleanup from 10 a.m.-noon May 10.

Volunteers are needed to help remove debris from local trails and creek beds. By participating in the cleanup, volunteers can help prevent debris from pouring into the ocean at Torrey Pines, Del Mar and Solana Beach. Volunteers should meet at the Poway Community Center, 13094 Civic Center Drive, where they will be given supplies and assigned to different sections of the trails.

Preregistration not required; community service credit is available. A raffle will take place after the cleanup.

Lake Poway open Mother's Day

POWAY ---- Lake Poway will be open from sunrise to sunset Mother' Day, May 11.

Families can use the pedal or row boats to meander around the Lake, take a hike on the trails or take advantage of the softball field, horseshoe pits, barbecues, volleyball court and playgrounds.

Trout season continues at Lake Poway. The lake is open for boating and fishing from sunrise to sunset Wednesdays through Sundays. Fishing permits, bait and refreshments are available at the concession.

Montessori school to hold parent workshop

POWAY ---- Country Montessori School invites parents to attend its "Montessori Journey" workshop.

The workshop will enable parents to see the school's classrooms through a child's eyes and experience how a child learns from one level to the next. Parents, as a simulated class of children, come for an evening of silent learning and community, followed by a morning of class work and discussion with teachers from each level.

'Living Luminaries' film screening set

ESCONDIDO ---- The film "The Search for Happiness, Living Luminaries" will be shown at 7 p.m. May 9 and 1 p.m. May 11 at the Creative Center for Spiritual Living, 1330 E. Valley Parkway, Suite G.

The film contains interviews with Eckhart Tolle, author of "A New Earth"; Marianne Williamson; Dr. Michael Beckwith; Mary Manin Morrissey; and a host of "New Thought" emissaries.

Book club to meet May 13

ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Public Library invites readers to the 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting at 7 p.m. May 13 in the Turrentine Room at the main library, 239 S. Kalmia St. This month's selection is "Pretty Birds" by Scott Simon.

The 2nd Tuesday Book Club will continue June 10 with a discussion on "Music of the Mill" by Luis J. Rodriguez. "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver will be the featured book for the July 8 meeting.

CPR, first aid class offered

Participants can also get certified in first aid and learn what to do for a drowning victim, how to treat for shock, immobilize fractures, treat burns and other medical emergencies.

Seminar for families with aging parents offered

Poway Spirit Day set for May 17

POWAY ---- The Poway Community Leadership Institute will sponsor Poway Spirit Day, a day dedicated to promoting volunteerism throughout the city, from 8 a.m. to noon May 17.

Volunteers are needed to help clean books at the Poway Library, paint the Poway Senior Center, clean up creeks, paint park benches at Lake Poway, paint over graffiti and other tasks. All ages welcome.

RB AAUW to host speaker

Marsha Gable, director of Outreach at Cal State San Marcos, will speak on "Women at the Core: Providing College as a Reality for Historically Underserved Students in Education." Gable will present a panel discussion about different areas of outreach to deserving girls.

Crisis intervention volunteers needed

NORTH COUNTY ---- The Center for Community Solutions is seeking volunteer domestic violence and sexual assault victim advocates to provide on-the-scene crisis intervention.

Volunteer advocates work closely with law enforcement and medical professionals and are trained to offer emotional support, information and resources/referrals to the victim.
