PREPS: Mission Hills' Darby to sign with Pepperdine
By DAVID BIDERMAN - For the North County Times | ∞
Mission Hills High boys basketball player Taylor Darby verbally committed to play at Pepperdine University on Wednesday and will sign a letter of intent with the school on Thursday.
The 6-foot-7 Darby, a forward, averaged 20.9 points per game last season. He said he chose Pepperdine over Cal Poly and Long Beach State.
"The decision was really tough," Darby said. "But the location and the education were good for me. And I know that the team is really rebuilding."
Pepperdine hired coach Tom Asbury on Feb. 20 after former coach Vance Walberg resigned in mid-January. Asbury is in his second stint at Pepperdine ---- he compiled a 125-59 record in six seasons at the school from 1988-94.
"I liked Coach Asbury a lot," Darby said. "I think the 2008 recruiting class he brought in was really good."
Darby will be joined at an on-campus signing ceremony by baseball player Brennan Metzger, who will sign a letter of intent with Long Beach State. Metzger, who plays center field, is batting .386 this season with 28 runs and 19 RBIs.
Howard to Humboldt State
David Howard, an Army-Navy Academy senior boys basketball player, signed a letter of intent to play at Humboldt State in late April. Howard averaged 17.7 points per game last season.
