Misleading reporting on education budget

First, I am not a budget person and don't know the ins and outs of financial planning. That said, according to the governor's budget (http://www.ebudget.ca.gov/pdf/GovernorsBudget/6000.pdf), the proposed education budget has gone from $56.9 billion (FY '06-'07) to $59 billion (FY '07-'08) ($2.1 billion increase) to $61.5 billion (FY '08-'09) ($2.5 billion increase). Why does the press (and teachers/administrators) continue to claim that the governor is slashing the education budget? Is it because reporters and editors do not understand the budget numbers, or is it intentional false and misleading reporting for some political reason?

Media protect illegal killers

I read the article on the Internet "Two arrests in teen's killing," April 25. The fact is, Adan Conseco Valdez is suspected of being in the country illegally, and this fact should be clearly stated at the beginning of the article so that the reader and public know the killer is in our country unlawfully.

The title of the article should also reference the fact that the alleged killer is apparently in our country illegally. But the media seeks to not tout the fact that illegal aliens are committing heinous crimes on our soil, so they bury the fact in a confusing manner from the public at the end of the article, where it reads there is an immigration hold on the alleged killer. I guess the media is so open border and so pro-illegal immigration that they use devices to even protect the killers and criminals in their reporting.

The Constitution is a suicide pact

The American Constitution is a deadly and dangerous document. Every member of the military, every commander, judge, member of Congress and every president partakes in this suicide pact: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same."

This blind allegiance and fanatical faith have resulted in holocaust, wars and death of tens of millions who died for what is nothing more than a piece of paper containing radical left-wing ideas. Consider that nothing is more vital than life itself, for once we are dead nothing else matters. Millions have been killed, tens of millions maimed and countless fortunes lost fighting for an archaic Constitution terribly outdated in the modern age when security and protection from terrorism is now the paramount necessity.

No creed, constitution or document, whether religious or secular, exceeds our security and survival as a species. We all need to wear a lapel pin of our flag, and trust our president to keep us safe. Get over it, Obama. Get your priorities straight. Flag pin over Constitution.

Guns come down to individual choice

"Dis-arming" Joe Grant once again comes to the conclusion that "more guns is not the answer" (Letters, May 4). Perhaps he can sell that idea to the citizens of Chicago and Washington, D.C. How long have they led the list of cities with a high incidence of violent crime? Yet they are both gun-free cities.

Joe doesn't want people who easily lose their temper to have concealed carry permits. I seriously doubt Joe even knows what a person has to go through to obtain a CCW permit in most states. ...

Joe pointed out the woman who defended her church congregation as "just doing her job." Wrong again, Joe. She wasn't a security guard for the church, just a parish member. Fortunately, given the circumstances, her pastor elected to use common sense and opt out of the gun-free zone mentality.

As to the Pizza Hut driver, he elected to exercise his right not to be a victim. The corporate suits can make all the rules they want in their well-lit, air-conditioned offices. They won't be the ones beaten or maimed because some vermin decides to get some additional kicks while robbing a deliveryman. ... What it comes down to is individual choice. A choice that is denied to most because of people like Joe.

Americans have the right to self-defense

Mr. Joe Grant seems to not know the worth of a human life (Letters, May 4). Would he give up everything he has to an armed criminal rather than defend himself? There are many criminals out there who will take your property and your life.

He states, "I object to easily upset people, unlicensed to carry, who do," but who is to determine who is upset, who approves the licensing of guns and who has a right to defend themselves? Is it Mr. Grant? I think not. What I object to is people who deny me my right to defend myself, including the California anti-gun judges who declare a person's front yard a public place. Did you know you couldn't carry a gun in your front yard?

I don't think the VP or H.R. for Pizza Hut or the commissioner of Public Safety in Chicago are qualified to set gun policy for everyone in the U.S. I think my life and property are worth a lethal shootout, and I respect your right to not defend yourself. The right to self-defense is not a right given by man, law or the Constitution, it's a God-given right to every human.

Liberals won't accept responsibility

Deanna Kuhn (Letters, April 17) complained about the response to Jackie Speier's surrender speech. Why would Rep. Issa listen to another Harry Reid- or John Murtha-type anti-U.S. presentation? Walking out is the minimum responsible response. She represents her constituents. She has a larger responsibility of representing the United States, not our enemy.

Ann Harter (Letters, April 17) made a vague "Cheney-Bush cartels" accusation. Does she know what OPEC is? Can she validate a Cheney-Bush connection to OPEC? If she's referring to federal gas tax, Clinton jumped that from 14 to 18 cents a gallon in 1992. Has it occurred to the writer that gas prices are what they are because, for 35 years since the oil embargo, we have done little to conserve, and Democrats prevent exploration where there is oil?

Oil imports increased from 47 percent to 60 percent during the Clinton administration, but I don't blame him. Can we consider consumer responsibility? For liberals, accepting responsibility and thinking is more difficult than accusing an easily identified villain.

BEACH Act a practical way to get things done

As a frequent beachgoer, former lifeguard and council member in a city whose economy is dependent on our beaches, I was very happy to read about the reauthorization of the BEACH Act by the House of Representatives last week. The BEACH (Beaches Environmental Assessment Coastal Health) Act will increase by 33 percent the amount of funding available to local governments to test and monitor the water quality at area beaches.

I would especially like to thank my old lifeguard buddy, Congressman Brian Bilbray, who introduced the original BEACH Act several years ago, and voted to reauthorize it for another five years. In addition, the House approved his amendment, which could lead to a significantly improved testing system in which results could be available in just a few hours, as opposed to several days.

Since the bill's passage in 2000, the number of beaches nationwide that are now routinely tested has almost tripled. The passage and reauthorization of the BEACH Act shows that when Republicans and Democrats work together, they can get things done. ... I also want to congratulate Brian on his award as congressional waterman of the year, but just for the record, I can still out swim him.

Name-calling on Web site is not free speech

Curiosity got the better of me this morning, and I decided to check out the Web site Mr. Amorosa of Leucadia referenced in his May 2 letter to the editor. This Web site absolutely floored me. (Check it out yourself –– www.i-want-my-country-back.com.)

Simply put, this Web site is full of hate. Words such as "lying," "deluded," "dirt bag," "ignorant," "scumbag," "friend of terrorists," "pompous propagandist," "dim-witted" and "idiot" are used to describe anyone who has provided what is deemed #&objectionable#8 letters in the past. Further, numerous corporations and famous people are blasted on the Web site.

I call for an immediate stop to these antics of name-calling by the site Web master, Navy Capt. D.A. Johnson. This is not healthy dialogue or the free speech that our country was founded upon.

Regardless of where we stand on issues, I think we need to present facts in an open and honest forum and not resort to this kind of behavior. Perhaps I will now see my name on "the list." Does the name "McCarthy" ring a bell?

Just as proud of her 'superior' country

Recently, illegal immigrant activist Tina Jillings posits that "anti-Latino protesters are still being controlled by their prejudices" and that "We are not different than any other nationality" ("Different reactions to ethnic events," Opinion, May 5). Well, previous waves of legal immigration brought people, including my own forbears, who considered themselves fortunate and blessed to be able to come here to work hard and educate their children. They learned English without bilingual education and loved this country.

Today's illegal immigrants do not consider themselves blessed to be here –– they will not learn English, they expect U.S. citizens to pay for their health care –– all the while demanding that we speak Spanish to accommodate them. They are so proud of their superior culture, which leads me to ask, if their home country is so great, why do so many of them try to come here?

Do not call me racist or xenophobic because I stick up for my country; I have not asked anyone to come here illegally. ... And I can be just as proud of my culture, my language and my country as those who would come here and then demand that I owe them more than they get from the "superior" countries from whence they come. God bless the U.S.A.

The changing ideology of the U.S.

In our society today, the most important tenets of freedom, exemplified in the U.S.A., are attacked through the homosexual agenda, those being –– family, free speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly and freedom of thought. When schools become controlled to the extent that indoctrination is primary and learning secondary; when institutions are changed against the will of the people; when freedom of speech is infringed upon; when freedom of religion is squelched, then an ideology foreign to the original tenets of freedom is at work. The public school system in America has been sabotaged by a foreign ideology. In schools, homosexuality cannot be taught without attacking and redefining marriage, family, religion, free speech and free thought. The homosexuality establishment is redefining the tenets of social, moral and religious beliefs of the U.S.A through this indoctrination in public schools.

"The Naked Communist," a book written in 1958, outlines 45 Communist goals. Note No. 17 –- get control of schools and teacher associations; 26 –- present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural and healthy"; 27 –- discredit the Bible; 28 –- eliminate prayer or any form of religious expression in schools on the grounds it violates separation of church and state.

These words sicken him

Here are some words from Israelis. "A thousand non-Jewish lives are not worth a Jew's fingernail," Rabbi Dov Lior. "We will carry out a greater holocaust against the Palestinians," Matan Vilnai, Deputy Defense Minister. "All of the Palestinians must be killed; men, women, infants, and even their beasts," Rabbi Yisrael Rosen. There are plenty more where those came from. All you have to do to find them is look and stop hiding your head in the sand. Calling for genocide, advocating the murdering of infants?! These Israeli words sicken me.

Marine concert made us walk a little taller

Once again, many of us were privileged to see and hear the First Marine Division Band in concert at the beautiful California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Our collective thanks to Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler, the City Council and the North County Times for their efforts in bringing us two evenings of beautiful music.

We heard, among others, the "Zampa Overture" by Herald, the "Colonel Bogey March" by Alford, and naturally, the "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa. Closing the performance was the ever-popular "Armed Forces Medley," which usually brings the audience to its feet.

I admit to being a bit biased, but I hope you enjoyed the evening as much as I did. A sharp salute also, to the two conductors, W.O. Stone and Gunnery Sgt. Villa, for their baton work. I do believe the applause could be heard in Poway. Did we all walk a little straighter when we left the building, or did I just imagine that? Thanks again.

I think it is a little over the top that you would expect this newspaper or any other news outlet to announce the immigration status of any person who commits a crime. Does a murder of a loved one hurt less when it is committed by an American citizen? A woman just sat in court yesterday for killing her 19 month old son, I guess it should be less painful for those who loved this child since she is an American citizen. Robin you are just so anti-immigrant that you have lost all rational. It is understandable though since you hang out with Jeff Schwilk and Michael Spencer and they are the kings of hate towards ALL Latinos. Let's face it you are against the entire Latino community and any story that includes a Latino surname will catch your attention and you will automatically assume gee lets see Latino last name, brown skin, Bingo must be an illegal immigrant. You are really crazy.

Ron wrote on May 8, 2008 8:33 PM:Sure you are John Carlson. He says he "might not be a budget person..."
A budget is not rocket science, I mean... really. Live within your means. Simple, right? Not the in the government sphere, it's never enough. Every single American has to live within their own means, but not the government. Do you ever notice, even when the economy is down, government spending always goes up? Does your personal spending go up when your personal economy goes down? No!
You adjust your living expenses to what you have to spend. And speaking of what you have to spend, how much do you have to spend with these guy's putting their sticky fingers into your wallet every time they get a wild hair? Every American who earns a paycheck knows the tax man always gets his first, and your dead second. Whatever he leaves you, is what they expect you to survive on. Isn't that just backwards?
And John Carlson is right. Then they start lying about it. About how much they spend, and where that money comes from, and it goes to?
As far as misleading reporting on the education budget, that's par for the course. They always lie about how much is needed, as opposed to how much they want. You see, they, like Hillary, have so many ideas of how to spend YOUR money, we simply can't afford them all.
And you know this line about spending more on education to get good teachers is just a bunch of bull. You know why?
Cause they never apply that same logic, or the same argument to any other occupation. I mean.. just listen to em. When was the last time you heard a lib say let's pay our service men & women more, so we can get the best & the brightest? You haven't. No, what you have heard is: "Let's start the draft."
And that's how you really know it's all pap & phoniness. Cause it isn't a principle with them, it's a sound bite.
It's whatever will get them elected at the moment. In all the liberal hype and screaming about Blackwater, did you ever hear one, just one... lib say we could take that money and pay our military better? I didn't. And that's how you know it's phoney, and it's lib-speak.
And maybe it's just me, but with a 1/3 drop out rate, I'd say... we're in need of a refund of some kind.

Ron wrote on May 8, 2008 8:47 PM:Robin Hvidston, do you know what is really sad about the Media protecting illegal killers? It's the fact that these killers primary prey is other illegals. And we can't even talk about it, so the chaff mixes with the wheat.
In fact, the very people who claim they care about the "good illegals", never seem all that concerned about how these thugs prey upon these hard working farmers. It's really quite astonishing.
But this is the problem with lib's. Instead of openly discussing an issue in an honest way, they won't, and would rather shut you up.
And I'm still not getting this idea of how these good, hard working, honest farmers are good candidates for becoming Americans when they won't follow the laws of this country. I mean.. according to the immigration laws, don't you need to not break ANY law to be considered? I'd say that seems like a good enough to deny citizenship, not obeying the laws.
But maybe, I'm just bitter and clinging to my guns and religion?

sdraoul wrote on May 8, 2008 11:23 PM:Robin Hvidston (a foreign sounding name) seems to think that anyone with a Spanish-surname is illegal.

Robin (he or she?) also seems to think that a local yokel cop can tell the difference between legal and illegal and be in a position to tell that status to a reporter. Trained federal officers cannot make that determination legally unless the subject admits to it and signs a voluntary confession and/or deportation order.

The only person who can make such a judgment is an immigration judge, not a Border Patrol Agent, not an ICE agent and certainly not an untrained local cop.

If they can't, how is a reporter supposed to know when an officer announces the arrest for some crime or another?

I suspect that the names Tammy Chavez and Victor Navarro mean something to SDRAOUL -- and it should to you.

But to remind you, Victor Navarro is a "resident of Mexico" who [is accused of] raping Tammy Chavez so violently that she needed a colostomy bag and a catheter for years, and 6 years later still uses a catheter. Tammy Chavez was sexually tortured for hours.

Victor Navarro is awaiting trial for the rape and torture, which, to quote the article: "Her insides are ruined," said Chuck Ryder, a marriage and family counselor who has worked extensively with Chavez and her husband. "She is the most severely injured person I have ever heard of who lived."

…"I'm 44 years old and I'm in diapers," she (Chavez) said, wiping away tears.

Most people don't read posts written that way. Second, you can say that the Congress controls everything. Mostly true, but there are exceptions. Presidents accomplish a lot via executive orders (and this President has used this enormously from day 1). Presidents also can make "signing statements" when signing a bill passed by Congress. The signing statement provision allowed Presidents to express the fact that they were not sure the bill being signed is Constitutional. Our current President has widened the use of signing statements to unprecedented levels. He has made more of them than all the previous presidents combined. He has used them outside the scope of the constitutional doubt area to, in essence, say that even though he is signing a bill into law, it is not his intention to obey it. And don't forget, in addition, that a simple majority (as the Democrats have now) is not enough for a Congress to get its way: 60 votes are needed to overcome a filibuster. And the Republicans in the current Congress use the filibuster almost automatically, even though when they had the majority they tried to pass a law that barred filibusters. And finally, even for bills that pass the Congress, the President has veto power, requiring an even larger majority for the Congress to overturn. So your claim that Congress is in charge is, um, pretty much mistaken.

DD Wiz wrote on May 9, 2008 5:27 PM:The post from "To to to to OH PLEASE" (4:36pm) shows a complete lack of knowledge about the current status of the so-called Democratic controlled legislature.
Yes, they have a small majority in the House and can get things done there, although not enough to override a Presidential veto. But, to inform this writer of a rather basic premise of our government, there are TWO houses of our bicameral Congress. There is also the Senate.
In the Senate, there are two independent Senators (Lieberman of CT and Sanders of Vermont) who caucus with the Democrats to give them a ONE-VOTE majroity, but only for committee purposes. There is another Democratic Senator, Tim Johnson of South Dakota, who was severely debilitated by illness but is officially in the Senate, but has been unable to vote on most issues.
Lieberman does NOT vote with the Democrats on war or energy issues, and with Johnson out, the Republicans actually hold a majority on war and energy issues. So, yes, the Democrats asked us to vote for them to address these issues but, ON THESE ISSUES, we did not give them a majority.
Not only that, in the Senate you need 60-votes to override a filibuster, and 67 to override a presidential veto.
So until the Democrats get more Senators and a Democratic president, the policies we have are still being dictated by the Republicans, who have a voting majority on the specific issues this person mentioned, thus confirming his complete lack of knowledge of the current government.
