REGION: Soldier with Temecula, Oceanside ties dies in Iraq

By JOHN HUNNEMAN - Staff Writer | Monday, May 12, 2008 6:10 PM PDT

Mary Jaenichen made the decision to join the U.S. Army early in life.

The 2006 graduate of El Camino High School in Oceanside was part of that school's ROTC program for several years and had joined the Army Reserve before graduating.

Jaenichen, 20, an Army specialist who spent time in Temecula with her mother before going on active duty last spring, died May 9 in Iskandariyah, Iraq, of a noncombat-related injury, according to a Department of Defense press release.

In Iraq on Monday, U. S. Army Lt. Col. Randy Martin said he could not comment on the cause of her death until the investigation was completed.

Jaenichen was assigned to the Brigade Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., and served in Iraq as a military police officer, said Kevin Larson, a spokesman for Fort Stewart.

"She joined the Army as part of a special program that lets high school students attend boot camp in the summer between their junior and senior years," said Alfred Jaenichen, Mary's father.

After high school graduation, Jaenichen went through additional military training before reporting to Fort Stewart in June of 2007 for active duty.

"Joining the Army was her decision," said Mini Jaenichen, her stepmother. "Her father just retired from the Marine Corps. They used to tease each other a lot about that."

Alfred Jaenichen, a Marine Corps master sergeant, retired after 23 years in the military. The couple live in Santa Ana.

Mary Jaenichen had moved to Temecula to be with her mother, Julieta, but spent little time here, family members said.

"She (Mary) mostly used the address in Temecula for mail while she was away at training," said Mini Jaenichen said.

Efforts to contact Julieta Jaenichen on Monday were unsuccessful.

Emily Ricci, a 2007 graduate of El Camino High School, was part of the ROTC program with Mary Jaenichen.

"She was the one who was always cheering everyone up," Ricci said Monday. "She was really small, but she had the biggest spirit."

Ricci, who now volunteers with El Camino High School military training program, said the group plans to award the Mary Jaenichen Drill Spirit Award at the end of the school year.

"She definitely died doing what she loved," Ricci said. "The last thing she said to a lot of us was that she wasn't afraid to die for her country."

Her father described the fallen soldier as a beautiful person inside and out.

"Mary Jane would go out of her way to help everybody," Alfred Jaenichen said. "She would do anything for anybody."

Her stepmother said the soldier surprised her family in March when she arrived home on leave.

"She was so grown up," Mini Jaenichen said. "She said after being in the military herself she finally really understood her father."

In Sacramento on Monday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered flags at the state Capitol to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen soldier.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary's family and friends as they mourn the passing of this brave and dedicated patriot," Schwarzenegger stated in a prepared statement.

Mary Jaenichen's body arrived in Dover, Md., on Monday and is awaiting transport to California, her father said. Funeral services are pending.

Mary Jaenichen is the 11th military member with ties to Southwest County to die in support of Operation Iraqi freedom.

Karl wrote on May 12, 2008 5:48 PM:Chris,

I get your message. Whether you are right or wrong is not for me to decide. It is a terrible tragedy that anyone died today defending their right to live on this earth.

Whether you are on side "A" or side "B" to gloat as all knowing for side "A" or side "B" is really sad.

Once upon a time I asked you to name something that made you happy and I am still awaiting the response. There has got to be something that will make you do cartwheels. A positive blog from you about one happy moment in your life would send me into cartwheels. Please respond with the bright side.

Chris wrote on May 12, 2008 7:59 PM:What is all this nonsense of what makes me happy. I will tell you what doesn't make me happy and that is the American people's support of our military in killing people in another land that were minding their own business. I see all this sadness about one of our own being killed but no sympathy for those that were killed by our love of war. WHERE IS THE SYMPATHY FOR THE VICTIMS OF OUR AGRESSION? This business of what makes me happy has nothing to do with anything. Enough of that dead horse.

As coming from a sister whos brother is over fighting in Iraq I feel that your comments are not appropriate for this story. Someones daughter died and that is a terrible thing. If you can't say something supportive towards this family then don't say anything at all please.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mary's family.

Shannon wrote on May 13, 2008 6:43 AM:I agree with the above statement, this is not a time for a debate! Iam sure there are families over there who feel the same about us as you do Chris, but iam 100% sure that their are families over there and families here who do pray and mourn all the innocent who have lost their lives. My prayers for the family and my deepest respect for those who have lost their lives and continue to fight.

Sabrina wrote on May 13, 2008 9:13 AM:This is such a sad news and this is the worst Mother's day 'gift' because the daughter died few days before Mother's day. Can anyone imagine mary's family feeling? May God heal Mary's family sore and pain.

WILDOMARTIAN wrote on May 13, 2008 9:35 AM:GOD BLESS MARY AND HER FAMILY FOR THEY ARE TRUE AMERICANS!

As for for Chris, God bless you for exercising your right (protected by other Americans, like Mary) to speak your mind. As ignorant as it may be.

Chris wrote on May 13, 2008 10:40 AM:Of course these comments are never appropriate because you nor most of these Partiotic Americans want to face the fact of what we are doing. Well, I care more about the terrible things we are doing in Iraq than I do about the feelings of people who are in the military or have loved one's in the military. What about the feelings of those in Iraq who's homes have been destroyed and their families wiped out. I believe that this is the appopriate place to try to get through to all of these people who only care about their own.

WILDOMARTIAN wrote on May 13, 2008 1:51 PM:Yes Chris,
Oh the terrible things that "we" are doing. Like building schools, hospitals, food, medicine. What on Earth are "we" stopping the tourture of humans that dare speakout against its government (sound familiar?) and the practice of seeing women as property? Chris, just to bring you up to date, the terrorist that are determine to rule that part of the world are the ones responsible the acts of agression!

To Chris wrote on May 13, 2008 2:26 PM:You know if us Patriotic Americans are so bad, then please feel free to leave American at any given time. The previous wars that our for fathers fought, give you that right and freedom to do so. Oh , but wait...the Iraqi es do not have the right or freedom to leave, but they will. Don't forget, each freedom you have including the freedom of speech (however inappropriately you may use this freedom) is because a soldier made sure it happened. I pitty those who people who choose to try and destroy our great country by deorgatory, uneducated and simply uncaring comments such as yours.

To the family of this fine woman, just know that there are millions of Americans who appreciated those who are currently serving our country, and will remember those who sacrificed it all for us....and the Iraqi es.

to chris wrote on May 13, 2008 4:59 PM:chris,
you are a sick individual. the family is reading this. who cares about the iraqi's let them all die and god sort them out. i happend to know this young woman and it sickens me to know that an ungrateful american like your self is worried about the iraqi's, i could only imaginge what the family thinks. if you don't believe what we are doing over there than leave america you don't belong in this great nation.

Warden wrote on May 13, 2008 5:44 PM:Chris..it's nice that you're enjoying your free speech rights. I think I'll enjoy mine - your left of center views are worn and tired. You're probably some old hippie hanging around Starbucks. Very sad.

Rob wrote on May 13, 2008 5:46 PM:Chris,
Let’s see where should I begin? I guess first, I would like to thank you for using your freedom of speech. You see I knew Mary Jane and I think she would not have an issue with you exercising that right. However there are forums that would be better for your point of view. I am sure if you do a search you can find a lot of people as inconsiderate as you are, and care more about voicing their one sided views then they do about others feelings. This forum should not be about your view on the war. This is about saying goodbye to a friend and loved one. I am willing to bet you do not know many of our service men and women, because if you did know them and listened to them, you would see that they are more concerned about the Iraqi people then you are. Our Military men and women perform selfless service and put their lives on the line every day, and most of the Service men and women are non-combat troops. Mary Jane was a Military Police officer, her job is to keep the peace and restore order. Not blow things up and kill people. All I am saying is, you should know what you are talking about before you bash people.

A Few Good Men wrote on May 13, 2008 6:49 PM:I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand at post.

Since you support the Iraqi’s so much, and are so concerned for them, I think you would be a much bigger help to them if you went over there and helped them. Plus you would be supporting this country by leaving it!

Wow... wrote on May 13, 2008 7:32 PM:I can understand Chris's comments being offensive to some as an American. However, the comments by the poster at 4:59 PM are a thousand times more offensive to me as a human being. This is still a free country, but let's try to be respectful of one another. All men (and women!) are equal in this country, not just those who you agree with.

My condolences to the families.

Words can never express what I feel inside. When we lost you, we lost a sister, a best friend, a soldier, a daughter, and an AMAZING American. You will never be forgotten. For you Mary Jane: For our loved ones who live deep within our memories, you are never dead until you are forgotten and you will never be forgotten! I love you Mary Jane.

Being the first friend to welcome me into ROTC and helping me through all of the good and bad times, I will dearly miss you. Although crushed by your loss of life, God has taken you to a better place and he took you when you were doing something you loved.

I love you and Miss you Mary Jane! Forever in our thoughts, prayers and memories and never to be forgotten!

Donate your time and money.
You are just a persons that talks a lot of nonsense.
Criticizing the country that supports you.

My family is from the middle east and the country my family is from would not give us 1% of what this GREAT country the United States has offered us FREEDOM. we love the United States and the troops that serve this country for our freedom. .
