Skaters' pool party

Forty top pro, masters and female skaters will converge on the newly remodeled Vans Skatepark in Orange for the 2008 Pro-tec Pool Party on Saturday to vie for a piece of a $90,000 purse.

The bowl contest will take place in one of the most unforgiving bowls ever built. It is a mirror image of the infamous Upland Combi. Among the top pros on the invited list are Rune Glifberg, Bucky Lasek, Omar Hassan and Bob Burnquist. Skate legends Chris Miller, Steve Caballero, Jeff Grosso and Lance Mountain are also on the list, as are top females Cara-Beth Burnside and Lyn-Z Adams.

WCT on hold

Due to poor surf conditions the Billabong Pro at Teahupoo in Tahiti is stuck in a holding pattern until the waves pick up. The waiting period for the contest, which is the third stop on the World Championship Tour, was scheduled for last Thursday through this Sunday. Contest officials had been hoping to start the action on Monday or Tuesday.

Brown back

Skater Jake Brown, who took a harrowing fall off the mega-ramp during last summer's X Games, was back in action last week at Burnquist's mega-ramp in Vista. Brown completed his first run with ease and was happy to get that first trip behind him.
