Suspect arrested in Oceanside

FALLBROOK ---- A man was fatally stabbed at a Fallbrook gas station Wednesday afternoon in what may have been a carjacking attempt, authorities said.

The stabbing was reported at 5:19 p.m. at a Shell station at 936 Mission Road. Firefighters responded to the scene and tried to revive the 24-year-old victim, but he was pronounced dead about 5:30 p.m., said North County Fire Protection District spokesman John Buchanan.

A suspect was arrested later in Oceanside, said sheriff's homicide Detective Dave Brown. He said detectives were interviewing the victim's girlfriend, who witnessed the stabbing and described it as a carjacking.

Giovanni Cornejo, 32, said he was on his car dealership's lot across the street from the gas station when the man was stabbed. He said he looked over when he heard a woman screaming and saw her trying to pick up a limp man.

Cornejo's fiance, 33-year-old Celine Weiler, said she ran across the street and began administering CPR to the victim, who she said had a single wound under his armpit. Weiler said the victim was covered in blood and bleeding from his mouth.

Weiler said that a man had tried to carjack the couple's new Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle. She said the suspect and a female driver had sped away in a Honda Civic.

Homicide detectives remained at the service station for hours after the stabbing.

CrimeWatch wrote on May 14, 2008 10:31 PM:Welcome to the new reality. More violent crime is on its way! Some will blame the economy for the spike in violence and they will be partially right. The real reason for the violence is the lack of character in our population. Despite poverty, one does not just become violent and criminal. Many factors contribute to the violence and criminal activity. However, the basic element consists in one lacking personal integrity and character. Character(respect, integrity, and compassion) seems lacking in almost everyone these days from the highway speeders to the tax cheats. What a shame! I guess we all should start preparing on how to defend ourselves or if we are in the wealthy class we could barricade ourselves in gated communities with personal body guards. What a country!

Bob wrote on May 15, 2008 5:37 AM:This was apparently someone out on parole. Do you hear that parole board? Now, someone is dead and you are responible. Now, we need a DA and a jury to do the right thing. I'm sure that murder in the course of a crime will easily qualify for the death penalty. This may not stop other criminals, but it sure will stop this quy.

not amused wrote on May 15, 2008 6:51 AM:For those of you that make light of this murder, shame on you and by the way...it is your own apathy that plays a major role in this going on and on. And if this suspect was on parole, until we get real and build more prisons or somehow take control of criminals, this kind of stuff will never end. And no, I don't want to hear about how bad the crook had it. The first blogger is right, just because you have it rough does not mean that you have to become a criminal.

I am sorry but wrote on May 15, 2008 6:55 AM:it is getting to the point where our citizens need to be required by law to carry a gun. Millions of innocent lives could of been saved, but no! The criminals are entitled to kill citizens and do time in prison for the crime. What a society?

Robert wrote on May 15, 2008 7:17 AM:Get a concealed carry license while they are still obtainable. If this young man would have been armed, the dirtbag would be dead instead. When the losers don't know who is carrying they will think twice about trying to take what isn't theirs. My prayers to this young mans family.

Debra wrote on May 15, 2008 8:01 AM:We are always surprised when there is a murder in our own home town, however carjackings, murders happen all over the country. We are not exempt in this sleepy little town. There are evil people lurking everywhere and we have to know what we would do in a situation such as this before it happens. The way to protect ourselves is to know that your car is not worth dieing for. My prayers and thoughts go to the victims and their families. The blame for this crime lies with the murderer himself not our sherrif's department or government officials. Why as a community do we always try to place blame where it does not belong?

Jeff wrote on May 15, 2008 10:40 AM:Hey Concerned, if I recall from news reports, Fallbrook has had two murders in the last month. Both of the murderers were arrested by the Fallbrook deputies very soon after the crime. This last one was after a car chase, foot chase, and a dog bite. They must be doing something right. I found this additional information in the Sheriff's press release.

I will not bash on your lack of grammatical skills because that's not the point I'm trying to address. However, I am very confused about what this incident has to do with President Bush and the soldiers...the only relevant word mentioned in your comment was "gas" because the crime scene was at a gas station...I don't get it.
